I find it odd that (if true)two other people were in cab with him yet -apparently-couldnt stop the vehicle.
It's a very sad affair all round.

It's not strange. There was very little could be done.

You and I get into a bin lorry; you sit in the passenger seat and I'll drive. At some point - not telling you when - I'll slump over the steering wheel and jam my foot down hard on the accelerator pedal. You have 10 seconds or less to successfully stop the lorry with no help from me. No problem, right..?

So what if it is a major incident - his medical status is still none of anyone's business except his family and friends. When the proper authorities have investigated then I am sure they will make public the cause of the accident, whatever that might be.

Plenty of reasons as to 'why they couldn't' with virtually nothing suggesting 'could of done this or that'.

Remember this is a 30 ton truck we are talking about and not a car weighing little more than one ton!

A good summary here;

Quote:
“
HOW DID THE OUT-OF-CONTROL BIN LORRY TRAVEL SO FAR?

Police believe that the bin lorry continued for roughly 328 yards along the pavement after striking the first pedestrian.

A spokesman for the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators said that vehicles, even large ones, can carry on for a considerable distance if there is an 'unintended acceleration', which could be caused by a driver falling ill - and perhaps going into a spasm - with their foot on the accelerator, or by someone inadvertently pressing the accelerator rather than the brake.

The man, who asked not to be named, said: 'Without speculating on this incident, there might be a number of causes for a vehicle to travel a considerable distance.

'If there is no external influence on the steering direction of the vehicle, then it will continue in a straight line. 'An external influence might be a driver applying steering, or the wheels coming into contact with something like a kerb. 'Regarding the distance travelled, one would expect a vehicle to slow if the driver's foot had been removed from the accelerator, due to engine braking. And of course if the brake were applied one would expect it to slow.'

The spokesman said that in the eventuality of a brake failure a driver can also slow a vehicle by changing down through the gears.

He added: 'But there are air brakes on those (bin lorries) and vehicles are fitted with a fail-safe mechanism. In air-brake system failures, brakes will come on automatically.

'Had there been a failure in the air brake system the air brakes should automatically apply, but if it has carried on all this distance that would not appear to have been a problem in this case.

'So gravity and engine braking would slow it down over a relatively short distance, if acceleration was not applied. And obviously brakes being applied should slow it down over a relatively short distance.'”

You would have to know a great deal more about the operation of the dustcart and the circumstances for the situation in order to make an accurate judgement. The other people in the cab would have had to work out a way of stopping the vehicle in a matter of seconds, plus, they would have needed the presence of mind to act when they realised something was wrong with the driver. Not at all easy in an emergency situation. There may be a "Stop the Engine in an Emergency" switch in a dustcart, which could have been used in this situation, or there may not be. I'm not an expert on dustcarts!

I'm sure all the aspects of what may or may not have happened in the cab in the preceeding moments and during the accident itself will be thoroughly examined during the police investigation. Until then, it's probably wise not to speculate.

It took you 30 pages to come up with that?

Poor.

The driver is gonna feel so bad when he finds out what happened and you know his identity will get out soon enough the media will make sure of it

And hopefully the majority of people will be sensible and feel nothing but desperate sympathy for the poor man and his family.

You know it is possible to feel sorry for the driver, his family and the victims and still find aspects of it humorous right?

Yes and pigs can fly. Although your faith in the human race is admirable.

One aspect of the human race is their ability to find humor in tragedy.

Oh yes some idiots do when it doesn't affect them, sadly, too damned easy.

I don't know, we may be surprised. Nearly everyone I've spoken to about this has expressed their sympathy towards the driver.
I just truly hope this mindset outnumbers that of the brainless buffoons who will likely surface and will no doubt want the 'murderer' to pay for his actions.

What is it about this whole thing that you find humorous exactly?
Is this going back to your hilarious bin lorry joke?

The families of the victims will be angry and want answers so this driver better explain himself when he is awake

So you aren't excluding people who are affected by tragedy in your assertion? i thought not but don't let it get in the way of your moral outrage.

You mean my off the cuff comment that you are trying to make a big deal out of?

Yes that.

Yes I'm sure the grieving in this or any other tragic situation are making sick jokes constantly. But don't let that get in the way of you finding yourself highly amusing.

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of anything. I'm just genuinely curious as to what it is that you find funny about this.
