Sad news. The great power ballad, Up Where We Belong (with Jenniifer Warnes) will always remain my favourite of his output, although he recorded plenty of other decent songs.

RIP Joe Cocker

Very sad news. He's from my home city. I've got several of his early albums, all on vinyl and he recorded some amazing stuff with amazing musicians. My favourite would have to be I Can Stand A Little Rain, an album full of fantastic songs, great singing and musicianship. Well recommended for anyone who hasn't heard it.

Also look up his Woodstock performance (it made him big in the US at the time).

R.I.P. Joe.

His version of 'with a little help from my friends' is by far the best. A great singer and a sad loss.

Wasn't he just a one-hit -wonder and that was written by Lennon-McCartney ?

Ah, a childhood watching "The Wonder Years" means Joe has had a lasting legacy for me.....

Delta Lady was, in my opinion, superior to 'With A Little Help From My Friends'. I think he had about a dozen minor hits after those two.

Delta Lady was the first record of his I heard (1968?) and IMO it remains his best. His career was very much up and down, but he was a great singer.

I liked the songs mentioned, at the time. I lost track of him, he didn't appeal much. Sad news though.

When I hear his name, I think of Up Where We Belong from the An Officer and a Gentleman soundtrack. I'm not sure if he'd want to be remembered by that?

RIP Joe.

Not a good week, really. Cocker today, and Billie Whitelaw and Jane Brown yesterday.

I'll never forget the passion I felt he put into 'With A Little Help From My Friends'. It's a rare one for me, in that I can remember where I was the first time I heard it.

RIP my friend and thank you.

Eta: was just wondering - if his version had been the first - how well would The Beatles version have been received?

If that's really all you know, then why even comment?

He was so much more than that and I'm sorry the world has lost him.

He was from a time when hit singles were a bonus rather than the be-all and end-all of your career.

It's definitely not how I'm going to remember him!

Sad news.

With a Little Help... is one of those songs where you had to hear it when it was first released to appreciate how jaw-droppingly brilliant it was. No one had taken such liberties with a Beatles song before.

I heard one of Cocker's songs recently that just put a huge smile on my face: Woman to Woman. Utterly brilliant.

RIP
