Using mobile for sat nav? Uses data?
Does using a mobile phone for sat nav in a car, use mobile data?
How does using a mobile phone compare to using a tomtom/garmin? My tomtoms just died

Google Maps is excellent and very up to date. It uses data but not an awful lot.
Navfree is good for offline use. Waze is good if you want interactivity. Or you could use Noika HERE maps for offline or online. |

Why would you BUY a sat-nav app? Navfree is better and is FREE!

What problems does your TomTom have
As a Taxi driver surely you need a good bespoke Sat nav to rely on ? What happens if you have a phone app and enter a not spot you will look a plank

Here+ on Windows phones can be used with maps downloaded offline so incur no mobile data usage.

Personally as someone who drives for work and to different locations in Yorkshire and beyond I would put my faith in Tomtom and not a freebie phone app

Navfree might be free, it's certainly not better (and that's from side by side comparison tests). If I had to rely on a satnav program for work I wouldn't use any of the free ones, none are as complete or reliable as TomTom or Garmin.

Navfree has rarely let me down when I've used it either. Even my old standalone TomTom, when I had one, used to let me down on occasion. Why is it people seem to have in their head "if it's free it must be crap"? Nothing wrong with free at all. |

As I said, I'm a taxi driver and have used Google maps for free for a long time now. It has rarely let me down, and even on brand new estates, still being built they have the roads shown on them.

Ive a garmin sat nav used it for a few yrs until i got a smartphone and discovered the likes of https://www.waze.com/ its way better than my garmin, regular app and map updates, more regular than my garmin, live traffic reports beats my garmin. I drive approx 35k a year around the uk, ive also experimented and driven with both garmin and smartphone on at same time. smartphone gets me there quicker than garmin. |

I can't imagine any scenario where a standalone satnav or paid satnav app would be required. Although saying that it is a long time since I onnwed a car that didn't have a built in satnav, even basic cars like Ford's and Volkswagen's have them as an option now. |

Three reasons for using a dedicated sat-nav on a motorbike:
1) They bounce without breaking; 2) They get soaked without breaking; 3) They can take a pre-plotted route *avoiding* fastest or shortest, ideal for touring the path more interesting. |

Co-Pilot. Not a free app but costs about £17.99 if I remember correctly. Maps are downloaded, so so data usage. Usual options such as traffic updates are available at extra subscription costs if you need such services.

Sygic is another good one. I have used it for a few years now (android) & it's improving all the time. You do have to pay for the maps but as a result there is no data usage. Lifetime subscription as well & free speed cameras.
The latest update is very good. It helps as well the bigger your smartphone obviously. I have inbuilt sat nav in my Focus but still use Sygic |
