Was 2010 the closest that Corrie has ever come to emulating the quality of 2003-04?

On the Karen McDonald thread there's been many references to the quality of the show throughout 2003 and 2004 and how it's now regarded as a golden era for the soap. We had many classic storylines like Tricky Dicky, Mad Maya, Todd coming out, baby Billy's death, Tracy and Karen's feud and Peter's bigamy. That era also boasted some classic characters at the forefront of the show like Shelley Unwin, Fred Elliott, Mike Baldwin, Danny Baldwin, Bev Unwin, Charlie Stubbs, Sarah Platt and Karen McDonald.

After 2004, there was a dip in consistency of quality storylines with the bar occasionally being raised- the Harris family tragedies, Charlie's abuse of Shelley, Mike's dementia, Leanne and Danny's affair, Tony/ Carla/ Liam etc.

I'd argue that 2010 was the closest we ever came to consistency again with Blanche's death, the Underworld siege, the love square, Natasha's baby lie and exit, Jack's death, Roy and Hayley's wedding, John Stape's secrets and lies, Gary's PTSD and the tram crash. These were all brilliant storylines IMO in terms of writing, pace and acting.

2010 was hit and miss for me. The tram crash was fantastically plotted and executed. Tony's last stand was quite sensationalist yet great viewing. Natasha came alive in her last months. Lewis also had a good 1st exit and Roy/Hayley wedding was classic but I wasn't a fan of Joe's death and aftermath, David knocking down Graeme and Molvin.

I preferred 2011. The final strand of the Stape story, Charlotte's murder was the beginning of that story for me. Claire's exit was great, Leanne/Peter wedding, Kylie/David, Peter/Carla, Janice exit, Tommy arrival, Sylvia arrival, Dennis returning, Becky's final year, getting rid of Graeme & Xin, the Prices taking over the Rovers, Marcia/Audrey, Carla's rape, Schmeichel being put down, getting rid of Cheryl/Chris/Ciaran, Frank was a great villian. Collinson really made his mark in 2011, he knew what characters to get rid of and replaced them with better, new ones.

All I remember from 2010 was Joe dying, Gail sent to prison, Underworld siege/Tony & Carla showdown, Molly & Tyrone car crash, Jack dying & most notably the tram crash & peacock house fire. It was a good year as all of the stories were entertaining & executed on screen brilliantly. Shame it couldn't keep that up really but I don't think it compares to 2003/2004 as they were epic years.

2010-2011 was the best for me. It was when Corrie really picked itself up after Kim Crowther's disgustingly dreary era. Things like the tram crash, Jack Duckworth's death, the Stape saga, Carla's rape, Sylvia's arrival and Dennis' return were executed amazingly. This is the stuff that made me join DS Forums and I genuinely loved watching and posting. Shame it's all nosedived since, eh?

I think so yes, but things change as we've seen with other soaps

It was the best period since then along with parts of 2011 and early 2012, but it didn't reach the heights of 03/04 for me. There were some good stories and ideas and a better feel to the show, but a lot of it was hit and miss.

The first half of 2010 was largely quite poor, the Underworld siege was well executed, the Stape story was up and down for me, Natasha's exit was great but it just showed how much potential was wasted in her leaving having done nothing, Jack's death was superb, the tram crash was good but the damage was repaired too quickly - more focus on the community recovering would have been nice, the Carla/Peter and Molly/Kevin reveals were brilliant, bringing back Tracy was a godawful mistake and to do it at Christmas and deliver a poor script was even worse, getting rid of Ashley and Claire was a mistake in my opinion too - they could have gone into the territory of Ashley left disabled by the accident and giving the family that to deal with rather than getting rid of them and the Graeme/Tina/Xin storyline was an insult to both characters.

That era felt like Corrie had the makings again to go on to be as good as it used to be, but didn't quite make it and at some point in 2012 it just fell back into the lull it had tried to get out of.

I think one of the major things that Collinson got wrong was the aftermath of the tram crash. During interviews at the time I remember him talking about how the face of the Street was going to change forever, but we didn't get that. 2011 should have seen the Street slowly being rebuilt but it was all repaired within a matter of six weeks and that was it. There was no follow-up of the unseen taxi driver who perished in the Bistro explosion- could we not have seen some of his family members come to the Street and interact with survivors like Nick, Sunita and Peter? The tram driver was never seen again after that fateful night.
