The Joan Chamorro Quintet are part of his Sant Andreu Jazz Band, a mostly youth band from Barcelona, they are a mixture of a few seasoned professionals young instrumentalists and teen-aged vocalists/instrumental soloists, all under twenty years of age. Very popular in their home country of Spain, both at concerts and on TV.
They play "old fashioned," jazz standards. and employ no expensive stage costumes, for the most part, more, "wear what you like."

Andrea Motis, aged nineteen. Vocals, trumpet, alto and soprano sax.

Eva Fernandez, about the same age?

Vocals, alto and soprano sax.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpTXL_P5Bhc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tOclIjPRIo

Rita Payes, only fourteen, (a sort of young Billie Holiday), Vocals and trombone.

Motis and Fernandez are part of her "backing singers" here.

Eat your hearts out, Puppini Sisters, when this goes double tempo.

and we get the X-Factor.

Thanks.......that's terrific !

That's the kind of jazz I like........where they play a recognisable song and jam around a bit with it. The girls are great !.........the accent just makes it sexy !.......

My recent young jazz player discovery is Daisy Castro, a 'gypsy jazz' violinist......

I enjoyed that, a pity there are so few views.

There's a lot of very competent young jazz musicians out there that get very little recognition.

Isn't it significant that jazz audiences in the main, are respectful as well as appreciative?

On some recordings they're titled Motis Chamorro Quintet, she's so important to the band. I can see her becoming a solo artist.

It amazes me that they have such versatility, singing and at least a couple of instruments, for most..

Motis' ability to play both alto and soprano sax, (totally different fingering to play the same tune in the same key and many saxophonists, combine tenor with soprano as the fingering's the same) as well as the trumpet is impressive.
When one girl takes the lead, the others are back in the orchestra. Just like it would be in the big bands of yesteryear.

I'm impressed with Chamorro, in that he's made the kids aware to this type of jazz and you can see they appreciate and enjoy playing it. I'm sure the adult performers with decades of experience behind them are a great help to the younger ones.

I like to listen to Scott Hamilton's tenor playing and particularly Josep Traver on guitar, whose style is reminiscent of jazz guitarists of the fifties and early sixties, like Barney Kessel and Barry Galbraith etc.,.

Traver's playing is so understated in this performance. Six string and "inside" chords, so beyond the capability of your average pop "guitar thrasher."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7-LsinT-3M

There's several YouTube recordings of Motis, Traver and Chamorro as a trio.

I've pretty much listened to nearly all the YouTube recordings available of members of this band and these must number about 100.

Some excellent music in this thread. Such a shame that Jazz is not more popular.

If it weren't for YouTube, we'd be denied the chance of ever becoming aware of some really talented contemporary singers and musicians, as they don't fall into the category of "pop."
Young people can't be blamed for having such a narrow perspective when it comes to popular music. The record companies aren't really interested in promoting other genres.

Digressing a bit..

Most contemporary jazz musicians can play any style of music.

I'm an admirer of (amongst many others) Natalie Cressman, a jazz trombonist and vocalist with her own band. She can also turn her hand to pop. I love her singing this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivRp1Y8CIlY

As for contemporary jazz singers, you'd go a long way to beat Halie Loren, such a great voice and perfect pitch. Dozens of her recordings on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5NG0_vUeLA

She sings well live, with just a piano and drums as accompaniment, no "auto-tune" or digital enhancements, here in a record store!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VAnnFl9WvI

I could list so many others.

Here's one of my current favourites, whom I discovered completely by accident by the way.

http://kazsimmons.bandcamp.com/album/signs

Her music combines a lot of influences from jazz to pop to folk

Any excuse to share it

Cheek To Cheek with Andrea and Eva......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXtVaJaShM0

I've got most of these 'classics' sung by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald or Ella and Louis and they'll always be the definitive versions for me but I love the youthful enthusiasm of the Barcelona girls.......

For the many hundreds who've looked at this thread and maybe seen the videos.

JOAN CHAMORRO & ANDREA MOTIS GROUP en les golfes

Here's the latest, uploaded on 2/01/2015. Seems to be an "out of hours" recording in a Tarragona nightclub for a TV programme. Carla Motis on guitar joins in on the last tune.

You get 24 minutes.

A nice day for an open-air performance in a square in Barcelona.

A ten year-old, Elsa Armengou, singing and then playing "second trumpet."

Here's another recently posted video featuring the big band and a couple of younger singers who I don't think I've seen before

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCJ5dZzjobM

BTW......I think this song was Ella Fitzgerald's first hit record in the 1930s......

Yeah, I remember a film of her singing it on the band coach.

I keep finding these clips by using the filter and clicking on upload date. There seems to be some each week..

Alba Estaban, now fourteen plays soprano sax in the band

Here she is at eleven.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXEnE3xOZtw

Here's more Alba Ammagou. There's two Ammagou sisters I think, in the band.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFx8HcMXNsc

Here she is at eight playing trumpet, from nearly five years ago. There's a young Andrea Motis playing with her and you can see Eva Fernandez behind her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kyfi1JbOv3k

I like the way everyone gets an opportunity to be featured, but not so much the boys, (less cute I guess, but just as competent).

I like how they're expected to do a bit of everything

I saw one a few days ago where Andrea was singing, playing the trumpet, then during the middle solos she went and joined the backing dancers !

Just to keep busy, like........

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZadWrV7Ttc

just watched this through again........no trumpet or sax solo.......I suppose dancing doesn't go well with playing a trumpet

I think that's from the same concert where she sang "Some Day My Prince Will Come."

At least the Spanish audience can clap on the right beat.

They all seem to muck in together, the "stars" are often back in with horns or reeds section when others are given a chance to perform.
I've noticed a green dress Andrea wore on this occasion occasion,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHfwSZXvRzk

Rita Payes wore it some months later. I guess when you're fifteen you won't have many clothes. A nice gesture.

Thanks for that.
It shows that young people can apply themselves, certainly in Barcelona. The way they are presented for the most part, you can see they don't spend a lot on wardrobe.

There's a documentary somewhere on YouTube (commentary all in Spanish) but you see the little kids before a concert, unattended, in a far from modern toilet/washroom, cleaning their brass instruments themselves. I don't think any of them come from wealthy families.
What I like is there's absolutely no hype and all the audiences are well behaved and respectful. Puts a lot of what goes on in this country, to shame.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5of13FT0Cc0

the young lad on the left as we see them is Finnish and looks like a hell of a guitar virtuoso....................to be fair the other guy does as well !

In the information about the members of the band, it gives their ages at the date of this recording April, 2010.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRlBaSo08rM

The boys rarely get featured, but here's one Jaume Ferrer, at 14, on tenor sax, from 2009, playing Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me5FmQxmCAw

Motis and Fernandez singing together back in 2011.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaYw3ee335c

this young chap could be the brother of the one above, same surname......and the whole band/orchestra seem to have lots of siblings aboard

includes a nice trumpet solo from a young Andrea in the orchestra.......

I think you're right, they seem to look alike. Juaume Ferrer is listed as the clarinetist in this later video, he'd be nineteen then.

I think there's a few brothers and sisters in that band, Magali Datzira, the singer/bass player's sister Iscle, is listed as on tenor sax.
