Another terrific performance

Having immersed myself in Miles Davis for the last couple of months I get the comparison......

Andrea is definitely my favourite current female artist.

As well as the singing, trumpet and saxophone I seem to remember her drumming on one video and joining the choreographed backing dancers on another one......multi-talented indeed !

A "first" in that video, (well, I've never noticed it before), Josep Traver using a capo.

A new Chamorro upload, This song has been performed and linked before. If you let this run the English version follows it. Being a much earlier performance, you can hear how much Andrea Motis' voice has matured in the intervening years.

Chega de Saudade, (No More Blues).

Some excellent solos from Scott Hamilton, (tenor sax} and
Ignasi Terraza, (piano),

New upload from Joan Chamorro.

Everyone back in the Sant Adreu Band.

Good solos from Carla Motis on guitar and Rita Pays on trombone and vocals.
Eva Fernandex and Andrea Motis back in the reeds section on alto saxes.
Magali Datzira on bass and Marc Martin on piano.

Some may disagree, but i think this guy can rattle out a tune. Seriously under rated and a true performer..First couple of minutes is zippable and the beginning of the tune is a bit glitchy but only last about 20 seconds..

I quite like Curtis Stigers, I purchased what I presumed was his first album called...err.. "Curtis Stigers" in 1991. He's pictured on the cover with shoulder length hair. He's matured a lot since then.

Here's a track from it.

But really he's not a subject for a thread on Catalonian jazz.

Latest upload from Joan Chamorro. From the write-up this was posted to promote the CD featuring Marc Martin.

Andrea Motis doubles on alto sax and trumpet on this (but not both at the same time).

Thanks for that, I spotted them listed on the right-hand side of the link.

I see iI's a "pre-beard" photo of Marc Martin on the cover.

This is one of my favourite tunes.

I spotted this one too, by Andrea Motis, though we might have linked it before.

Ahh i missed the Catalonia part..Sorry.
But was thinking more of him as a mature artist. Crosses a broad spectrum of styles.

I guess there's a lot of Jeff Lorber fans out there, I like him too, there's a lot of imitators, but any sort of "funk" or "fusion," really needs to be on a different thread.

A new face,

Thirteen year-old Abril Sauri, who sings, plays drums and trumpet.

A new young pianist too. Miranda Fernandez.

Apparently, the band are recording a new double CD for distribution in March next year, with 20 new tunes, to celebrate their 10th anniversary. So it says in the YouTube notes.

There's a nine year old as "lead" in the sax section, Koldo Munné, you can see him at 1.58

Another new face.
Helena Panart

Joan Chamorro, keeps bringing them on.
Some of his "stars" are reaching the end of their time with the school and will then I guess then have to be be guests with the band.
Andrea Motis and Eva Fernandez, both featured on alto sax.

Some more uploads from Joan Chamorro.

The Sant Andreu band playing "All of Me" featuring a new young man Joan Marti.(the "usual suspects" are in the orchestra).
Technically he seems quite proficient, with a nice tone, but his improvisational phrasing was a bit repetitive, this reminded me a bit of, "Kenny, twiddly, diddly, G" as I call him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdRKS2zvYW0

Magali Datziri, singing Billie Holiday's "On the Sentimental Side."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PLdtBseJmQ

She makes a good job of this.
Contrast Dick Oatts alto sax solo with that of Joan Marti, an example of "less is more," with no frequently repeated phrases, regardless of the fact it's at a slower tempo. But the he's had years of experience.

The backing musicians on this don't include any of the young musicians of the band, just the usual full-time professionals. Played recently at a concert.

Yet another upload from Joan Chamorro.

Slight change in this lineup for this Bossa Nova to include a flautist.

Andrea Motis on lead vocal, Rita Pays and Magali Datzira providing backing vocals.

Chamorro playing a bass clarinet.

They're coming fast and furious now.

But I wasn't impressed with a few things, Edward Ferrer struggled a bit with the difficult introduction to this song and there was far too much Joan Chamorro on tenor sax, particularly the "tortured" solo at the end. He should stick to promoting the band, not trying to grab the limelight.

I was really impressed with the arrangement and the band themselves. Listen for Eva Fernandez who we usually see playing alto, sax or singing, she plays baritone sax with the simple bass line on this and sounded excellent,

Here's another upload of a tune featuring; Eva Vernandez, Andrea Motis and Rita Pays.

It's the jazz standard "Mad About the Boy."

The words and music were written by Noel Coward. It's supposed to be "a woman's song," but given Coward's sexual proclivity, I've always found the lyrics slightly amusing, because I can imagine him singing it, which he did!.

A performance from the whole Sant Andreu Orchestra.
Alba Esteban, who is usually "hidden," in the reeds section, singing the vocal. Not a strong enough voice in my opinion, but all credit to Chamorro for bringing on the younger students.

Of the more regular members, only Carla Motis (guitar) and Rita Payes (trombone) appear.
Miranda Fernandez is listed as the pianist. Could she be Eva's sister? Though it's a common enough name in Spain.

Looks like Scott Hamilton must have left the band now as this other chap, Scott Robinson, appears to be the resident 'pro' saxophonist in the last few months

I got to like Scott Hamilton, haven't taken to this new bloke yet......

Just out of interest, Doghouse, what's the earliest one you've seen ?

Here's one here from 2010.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu6L8d4Kn34

It lists all the players and their ages !

Alba Esteban who features on your latest one was 10.........and she wasn't the youngest !

the oldest one who is still there now is Marc Martin who was then 17

of the 'stars' Andrea was 15, Eva 16 and Carla and Magali were only 13

Have you seen any older than this?

I don't think he's that new, there must be quite a few videos of him earlier in the year.

But there's far too many now to check through!

I don't think I've seen any earlier. The standard has improved considerably over the years. But you'd expect that.

The latest offering from Joan Chamorro, Eva Fernandez singing, "Close Your Eyes" with the Band and a different alto sax soloist.

This is followed if you let it run by "Rosetta," with a different vocalist, Paula Berzal, good solo on soprano sax by Eva Fernandez and Scott Robinson on trumpet, who we usually see playing tenor sax.

The band is sounding better and better.
