Just a poll. It wouldn;t be the first time, think Great Intelligence ..

Was wondering if there was more to the Dram Crabs, and could their source or reason be part of the conclusion of the next season perhaps?

Very unlikely I would have thought, unless the running theme is dreams.
That would be quite good actually if done right, us never knowing what of the next series is real and what is a dream hanging over from Last Christmas.

I actually thought last series that the only way you could justify the nonsense of In the Forest of the Night would be to say that it was all a dream!

In the past that seems to have been the case...

The Christmas Invasion referenced Torchwood heavily ahead of Series 2
The Runaway Bride referenced Mr Saxon ahead of Series 3
Voyage of the Damned had a song referencing "his journeys end" ahead of Series 4
A Christmas Carol featured the song 'Silence Is All You Know' ahead of Series 6.
The Snowmen featured The Great Intelligence in the midst of Series 7.

At the same time though, this is a rare case where the Christmas special has followed on very shortly after the series proper. In effect it is more of an epilogue to the series before it, rather than a prologue for what's to come. The episode title, the themes, the characters, the conclusion - all fitting with wrapping up Series 8's events rather than teasing those of Series 9.

Similarly, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe was a bit of a loose epilogue to Series 6 even if it was part of Series 7. It continued the 'mothering' theme which had played strongly between Amy and River in the sixth series as well as bringing the Ponds and the Doctor back together again. I feel that Last Christmas is simply a better defined, better overall example of that. I suspect that Series 7 being an anomaly that had to work around the 50th Anniversary, the intention is to make the Christmas specials an epilogue to the series proper now, rather than a prologue.

I'm wondering if the tangerine is the spinning top.

(Those who have seen Inception will know what I mean...and why I can't say more without spoiling the film for those who haven't seen it).

I thought maybe they were going for the same vibe., but more in a creative sense rather than as a plot device. It was a nice way to keep Santa alive for the kids, whilst also referencing a rather adult film in a clever way.

Those were just my thoughts on it anyway.

While I enjoyed the concept in last Christmas, and yes, it is entirely possible they could continue to use it into series 9, I hope they don't. I say this because it worked well for a one episode story, but to have such a concept overshadowing a whole series would make it lose any gravitas. Much in the way people moan about how in Moffat episodes, people dying isn't necessarily impressive because they so often come back to life, this idea would be just the same. No one would be impressed by any major plot twists because everyone would just be saying 'who cares, there probably just dreaming this bit'

You voted that you agree with yourself that you're onto something, Judge?

Don't think it's option 1 and too polite to vote option 3 so went for option 2. Got any spare?

With Troughton's character succumbing there must be at least one dream crab at large...

But I doubt it'll be dream crabs as a major story arc or threat. SM does like to play with reality and perception though, so I think in that sense it'll be a running thread through series 9.
