10wk old pup with Kennel Cough : (

I have a 10 week old Border Collie who has quite a nasty case of Kennel Cough - she's been the Vets and they said that if she gets any worse, stops eating or stops playing with my other dog take her in... I feel so sorry for her?

Any advice would be appreciated - she seems to be coughing a lot, any tips on soothing her?

Thanks in advance

Hard I know but try to keep her calm and warm, I am surprised you haven't been given antibiotics, I am sure that was how our dogs were treated (but years ago so treatment may have changed I guess). Steaming used to be helpful too.

What a worry for you. I don't think antibiotics work, Molliepops, because kennel cough is a virus... Although... at the back of my mind, I think I've heard there are several types of kennel cough so maybe it can be a bacterial infection and in which case antibiotics would work.

Halewood, I'd be concerned that the animal is only 10 weeks old, though - may not have the reserves to cope with a bad infection. Have you been in touch with the breeder? Because if you've only had the pup for 2 weeks (not recommended for puppies to leave mum before they are 8 weeks old at least) I'd be expecting the whole litter to have the disease. It might be useful for you to know what the breeder would recommend - though I realise the bug could have been passed by your existing dog.

I once had two adult dogs with kennel cough - after having the live vaccine - and they had it quite badly in that they sounded awful. But they didn't stop eating... labs don't.

Good luck and hope the pup gets rid of the bug without too much problem.

Oh I think ours had a bacterial infection perhaps as you say their are different strains.

I think other posters here have had some success soothing the cough by feeding a little honey to them.

I know you shouldn't give babies under a year honey, but I doubt it applies to puppies.

Never had a dog with a cough so no direct experience I'm afraid. Hope pup gets better soon xx

Didnt you get any antibiotics kennel cough is easily treated.... one of my younger cavaliers cought kennel cough some antibiotics and seperate him from the other dogs and he was fine.... although splitting sydney up from 5 other dogs was very challenging as kennel cough is very contcontagious but fortunately none of the other dogs caught it

So sorry to hear about your puppy, I hope he's on the mend. My small dog had kennel cough, she had an injection and improved a few days later. I've had dogs all my life and this is the 1st time I've had one with kennel cough. She was actually sneezing all the time, I was shocked when the vet said it was kennel cough. :dog:
