VGA laptop to HDMI TV port.

I want to watch films, YouTube etc on my large TV screen. However my laptop has a VGA port, and the TV an HDMI port.

I eventually got the set up working perfectly, with a VGA/HDMI adapter, with a built in usb for power and audio. However, this was short lived. The next day I set it up again, exactly as before, and nothing works. As soon as I now insert the VGA cable from the adapter, into the laptop, the screen goes black. On the tv screen I get a message saying there is 'NO SIGNAL'

I have checked out the laptop ports & find that if I connect an old monitor to the laptop, with a VGA to VGA cable it works perfectly.

Have I missed the obvious when setting up with the adapter, that I missed second time around?

I'm surprised the TV doesn't also have a VGA port on the back.

It's becoming common for new TV's to no longer have VGA, presumably all modern computers have HDMI?.

There we go, something to know when I update my TV.

Thanks for the interest, but sadly no solution, as I don't fancy the expense of a another adapter, and HDMI cable

USB to HDMI adaptors are cheap enough. Essentially it's another graphics card.

Have you thought about sound to the TV yet?

Not so sure what you mean with the USB to HDMI adapter.

My adapter has a USB connector for the adapter's power and audio to the TV

It's not an 'adaptor' it's a USB connected video card (as stig mentioned) - so might, or might not, do what you want (I've never played with one).

The USB supplies power for the VGA/HDMI converter - assuming it does audio as well?, then it presumably must include a USB sound card in the converter.

I've only ever seen one, as the customer was trying to use it on his new TV (which didn't have HDMI) - and while I managed to get it working, I wasn't terribly impressed with it (although it didn't help he was feeding it via a two way VGA splitter, which also fed his normal VGA monitor).

As his computer was built and maintained by the local computer shop guy (who he was friendly with) I suggested seeing him about fitting a better graphics card (with HDMI as well as VGA) and the capability of running two different screens.

Have you an android phone/tablet or an Apple i-device?
Chromecast, which is an HDMI dongle, can play online and network-stored media controlled from your portable devices, and not tying them or your PC up.
