Neighbours dog :(

My neighbours dog, a labrador, has been on his own since Christmas Eve. He's got a kennel with bedding which looks damp on the edge as it snowed here the other day. The poor dog whines and cries to be let in. I feel for it. How can my neighbour leave him outside in this weather for so long and on his own too I know she's got someone looking after him but he's still on his own for most of the day and night. My husband said we shouldn't interfere and he's right but what annoys me the most she's earns a far whack so why can't she pay for kennels. Is it cruel to keep a labrador outside in this weather?

What do you mean by "on his own"?
One assumes the dog must be being fed so there must be somebody around.

If you have any concerns, phone the RSPCA and let them decide whether the dog's living conditions are appropriate.

The dog might actually enjoy being outdoors all the time but, then again, if the owners aren't paying it sufficient attention then a visit from the RSPCA might be all that's required to get them to up their game.

Some people are just tight fisted when it comes to their animals How often does some one come & feed him ?

If he's got shelter, plus food and water, unless he's shivering I'm not sure you can report them.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a dog outside in any weather, so long as it is used to it and is kept warm and dry, has access to food and water, gets a walk and is shown attention.

Sounds like this poor doggie isn't getting all its boxes ticked. 5 days and nights is too long to leave the dog outside with someone turning up just to feed it, would she leave it in the kitchen for all this time - i don't see the difference.

Personally, I'd be inclined to give the owner a mouthful when she gets back. Kennels are not that expensive to be honest, ours is a tenner a night. It would have cost her fifty quid to make sure s/he was looked after properly.

I would call the RSPCA and they can look into it.

Well don't hold your breath. I reported a Jack Russell locked in a horse box for a week or so. On it's own in a farmyard. No bedding - with a pallet taking up half the space, little natural light, poo accumulating around him. Only contact someone was coming to bring food and water.
He was crying piteously day and night.
RSPCA response? He was at least getting food and shelter and they were too busy 'firefighting' trying to deal with more serious cases. I 'phoned 3 times - each time the same response (including asking for a donation).

Would the dog warden be a way to go, they can contact the owner and advise on care.

That's disgraceful.

The RSPCA should at least have spoken to the owners and told them it is not acceptable for that dog to be left in a horse box with no light and surrounded by excrement.

As far as the Labrador outside on it's own, I would report that to the RSPCA especially
in this weather. What happens if it takes ill and that person who is supposedly looking after it is only coming once a day. Selfish owner.

Why do these idiots have pets if they can't look after them. A dog loves to socialise and be with humans not shoved out of the way with no contact. It is so cruel. Animals feel hurt as much as we do.

While keeping dogs outside isn't something I would do, we haven't got to a point yet where we can dictate people cannot keep them outside if the dog is suitable.

RSPCA luckily realise that or many people would be in trouble.
