EE billed me too high first month?
Chrysalis
29-12-2014
So the contract I am on is 33.99 per month and 49.99 up front for phone.

The first month bill reads as this (After I activated online account).

Code:
Item Amount
Outstanding balance from previous bill(s) £0.01
Monthly plan charges(excl. VAT) £28.32
Charges this month outside plan £41.66
Breakdown of charges for your mobile numbers

    Breakdown of this month's charges
    EE Extra - 2GB £33.99	£28.32
Ultd Calls to 080 Numbers	Free
    One-off charges and credits
Flexi Samsung Galaxy S5 (Cat 6) Black	£374.99
Equipment Credit for Flexi Samsung Galaxy S5 (Cat 6) Black	-£333.33

VAT charged at 20% on £69.98 £14.00
Amount due £83.99
On the previous payments page it shows I already paid the upfront fee for phone on card.

So there looks like 2 issues if I am right.

I am been billed twice first month.
I am been billed for the upfront on the direct debit even tho I paid.

any thoughts? I will ring but ideally want people to say if they had same issues first.

Your first bill is always higher as you have to pay line rental up front

Well looking at the breakdown it serems I have the charge of 41.66 for the phone added. Quick googling indicates similiar complaints, it does look like an error.

The 41.66 matches the price of the phone minus subsidy.

Anyway since I decided the much better package is 10gig data unlimited mins for same monthly fee but 110 upfront instead of 50, after my number is ported I am going to see if I can switch. No idea why I didnt notice this when I ordered.

Had to change my post, didn't notice the phone was already paid for in advance (which makes sense obviously)

It adds up.

Your phone cost £374.99, you had a discount of £333.33. You therefore had to pay £41.66 for the handset, which has been listed as "charges this month outside plan'.

Your contract of £33.99 has been listed as £28.32.

Added together, it comes to £69.99.

Add 20% VAT, an extra £13.996, it comes to £83.99.

Actually I had to pay 49.99 for the handset which I paid upfront.

There should be 0 for the handset on the bill.

Is that actually the PDF bill, or just the website showing your account?

Its possible the PDF bill will show the card payment for the phone as a deduction later.

Its on the MY EE portal, so on the website.

I agree they may later apply as a discount but I will ring them to clarify this, I am still in 2 minds to ask to change package as I dont see myself using over 2 gig very often perhaps even never, however if I do go over 2 gig, then data addons are way more expensive than having 10 gig pre billed for.

He will still be paying for the handset among the £28.32 every month. 2GB data per month for £28.32 each month? 2GB per month Sim only would cost much less than £28.32. If you take off the EE 2G Sim only cost from the £28.32 that will be the handset portion of the £28.32

That £333.33 off is not really a discount. It's more that he's paid £41.66 towards the £374.99 handset cost up front.

It's going to cost you a lot of money over and beyond buying a handset elsewhere and doing the EE sim only.

Unless you want a plan that you can't get on sim only, such as shared data, or more than 10GB or the Extra plans with european roaming included. For some bizarre reason, SIM only doesn't cover the full product range. It may be worth buying a cheap entry level handset (e.g. moto g 4g) to get the price plan, and then buy the handset direct from manufacturer.

obviously I am aware the plan is a higher price to account for the phone, I meant there shouldnt be a separate invoiced item for the phone as I paid the upfront already.

From the information provided, the bill appears to be correct.

£41.66 (exc VAT) is what you have been charged for the phone = £49.99 (inc VAT).

When buying a phone direct from EE they include the phone cost on the first bill. You say in the original post that they show you paid £49.99 in the previous payments section. This is how they do it when you have paid upfront for the phone and bought the phone direct from EE.

The direct debit will be the amount due (£83.99) less the previous payments made (£49.99) = £34.00, and this is your monthly price plan amount (£33.99) plus the 1p outstanding from the previous bill.

Regardless of how they do it, If he has paid the 49.99 upfront, why are they including it in this bill? Either should be excluded or send one bill separately, also confirming that it has been paid.

It confuses people (I least Igot confused...)

Its annoying but they show all purchases on the same account, even if you then pay by credit card for some, those show as credits on the account. The "bill" is actually an account statement. I assume this makes it easier for corporate auditors.

I've seen other companies (not phone networks) do this too.

Ok I accept the explanation, so wont mention this to EE unless the DD is for the full amount.

Now you've got us wondering, I think you should check

Ok I did ring EE, its not possible to move to the other offer, if I bumped up to the same plan as an upgrade it would be an extra £10 month, so I am staying as I am and will order data bundles if I ever need them.

So a warning to everyone else ordering from EE, make sure you get the right plan from the off as it seems cannot change to another new customer offer after activating sim.

I basically paid £50 upfront and £34 month for 2 gig data and 1000mins + double speed 4g.
What I think is the much better offer is £110 upfront and £34 month for unlimited mins and 10 gig data, but they wont let me change to it now. Its basically equivalent to about £36 month compared to what I got now.

Ok I got a letter today from EE and it also shows me my first bill.

Sadly it looks like you guys are wrong.

It clearly says at the bottom of the bill "We will collect £83.99 on or around 6/1/15"

The £49.99 I paid is listed as a deposit rather than a payment for the non subsidised part of the phone, since I consider this wrong based on what I was told at point of sale I will ring them about it tommorow.

There must be multiple ways into the billing system.
