CS : Liz - awful mother?!
I can't believe how oblivious Liz is to what is happening! What kind of mother can't see the emotional breakdown and depression that their child is going through?

I think there was a flicker of concern tonight. She seemed quite worried when she found Steve in the bedroom and was defending to Eileen and Andrea up until Steve came down and admitted he'd spent the money in the account. I think from then she would have just thought she was up to his usual tricks.

Liz actions tonight prompted me to want to start a text like this for the first time in yonks.
She deserves a prize really for being the most insensitive and unconcerned mother it would be anyone's sheer misfortune to have. It's so embarrassing now and painful to watch someone who's so obviously self absorbed not seem to give a crap about the mental state of her own child!. And to top it off instead of throwing Steve the merest crumb of comfort she lays into him instead and puts him down in front of the neighbours when even a blind man on a galloping horse could see he's suffering. I don't know why Steve didn't disown her instead of Jim. Liz is obviously to concerned about what goes on in her knickers than anything else in her life. She's just too unlikeable now to be worth watching and too tedious to love to hate. |

To be honest I don't really know who Liz is or what type of chatacter she's meant to have.
Back in the 90s when she lived in the terraced house with Jim, Andy and Steve she was a great character. But she's totally different now. It's like she's not even the same person. |

Perhaps she too self involved to realize her son is ill, she thinks cause his in his 40s now it don't matter so much, I've been watching old episodes and she was very different in the 90s.

Maybe she is in denial - she doesn't want to admit to herself that her child might be depressed, she would rather keep thinking he is being his usual self as that is easier to take.

Liz is an awful caricature these days. Her ganging up on Steve with Michelle can't have helped him.

Before tonight, I understood that she may not have noticed the change in Steve, but after the scene in the bedroom where he was on the verge of tears, I do think she should have seen that something was wrong. However, with all that's going on with Street Cars, I do understand that she may now think that it was to do with the situation.

Not everyone can spot signs of depression so easily and quickly.
Some/many people have committed suicide before anyone could begin to help them.

She saw him crying on his bed and later noticed that his thought process was all over the place - when Liz and the others were talking about the missing money and he suddenly spoke about his regret at missing the panto! Liz seems to have become a very self-absorbed woman who is so busy with her own life that she is blind to her son's very obvious pain. |

The way Liz shrieked in her - very clearly depressed - son's face last night, and in front of other people, was monstrous. And it's not just Liz, no-one close to Steve has noticed his out of character behaviour and staying in his darkened bedroom all day. It's not even remotely realistic that not one person would realise what's going on. |

Awful mother, awful character, awful foghorn shrieking. Sadly people who are so staggeringly self absorbed and don't notice or care what's wrong with their children do exist, I'd even say they were fairly common.

This. Maybe it's her way of coping if she can't bear the thought that he is ill.
I know what you mean but it's not about her and her feelings at the moment. Her natural instinct should be to reach out to Steve and want to help him, not rant at him in that awful shrieky voice.

We often find ourselves calling Liz by SiL's name. |

A blind man wearing a bag over his head could see there's something very wrong with Steve, so his own mother should/would know instinctively - I know straight off if my son's worried about something, and usually know what that something is before he's even told me.

Mr Lakie has an ex-SiL who is a bit like a (slightly) younger Liz. She's selfish beyond belief and wears tarty clothes that are far too young for her, virtually ignores one of her kids and uses the other to play the martyr, and is constantly getting off with unsuitable men.
