Don't let the doom and gloom merchants put you off. I am currently using a BlackBerry Passport. Excellent phone. I seem to remember last year everyone saying BlackBerry was dead. Granted a small but loyal following. If you want go for it. Be unique.

I am a tad romantic about Blackberry of old, they genuinely were a good company. Products like the Bold line were excellent, however everything else was just a reactionary release. Had this so called "Classic" been released 3 years ago, I suspect they wouldn't be finding themselves in the hole they are in now. I loved the keyboard on the bold line of handsets, I tried a few months ago a Q10 had it for a week, and I was just a bit "meh" keyboard was greate as always but the software experience left a lot to be desired. Getting around on such a device was cumbersome, onscreen navigation literlly took up about an 8th of the entire area.

I like the look of this Blackberry, its familiar and probably overcomes some of the drawbacks of the Q10. I don't think it will be successful in the consumer market, this will probably see more success in the enterprise area. So far as I understand it the majority of Govt. IT projects still include Blackberry as the preferred choice for communicating on the move, this purely being down to security of which no other maker has equalled. I think the CEO Mr Chen has pretty much said the consumer side is weak, hence why he is right to focus on business.

Very tempted to pick one up.

I know BB have lost their way and this will be a phone for my 2nd SIM so not a main phone, but the keyboard and now being able to install Android apps is a big plus for me.

And when it comes to email, BB still nail it

Passport looks good but too big so Classic is a good option and cheaper

yeah just not the Google ones like Hangouts.

You can find APK files online or use the Amazon App Store and install Android apps that way if you like

Fried please.

Yes. I have to support all BB devices at work. Hateful things, all of them.

That was one of the biggest con-jobs foisted on the public, the biggest pile of crap wrapped up as an alternative to an iPad or Android tablet when it only should have been sold as a paperweight. Slow as a snail, pathetic support and terrible apps, even the minority of Android apps that (almost) ran on it.

The BB z10 wasn't much better either .

Blackberry for consumer hardware is dead, BB just haven't realised it yet.

They've sold 3.8m cumulative BB10 devices in the past 9 months.

The HTC One sold more units than that in less time. And in case people have forgotten, HTC is doing bad..... very bad....

Even the Huawei Ascend P7 has sold more units than all Blackberry 10 smartphones combined in that last 9 months.

Blackberry now have less than 40 million active users worldwide and account for less than 0.5% of all new smartphone shipments globally. They've lost market share in all the emerging markets where they once had pretty much all the custom (Indonesia) and carriers in western countries aren't exactly putting in orders for Blackberry 10 stock.

For anyone using a BB10 device. I have just followed the following instructions and I now have full access to my Google store on my Passport. Downloading apps via the Google store. Paying for apps via the Google store.

The playbook still offers a better interface than Android or iOS, is better built than almost every Android or iOS device, is one of the few tablets with decent stereo front mounted speakers. I'm keeping mine as a media player, something it does better than virtually every other tablet on the market.

Never found it to be particularly slow at anything other than startup (a problem that now afflicts my 2012N7 after lollipop).

I'd jump right back to a classic style BB if they were offered at work. Catch is ... that they're not being offered. For the purposes of work, they're unmatched. My iPhone is a hateful device for business use ...

Interesting - the Playbook and the original Kindle Fire are the same chassis, built by Quanta computer under contract to Blackberry, and due to poor sales, Amazon got a bargin price to use up the stock Quanta had. The first Kindle Fire was very slow.

At least your employer offers phones. My former employer (multi billion dollar multinational) was fully BYOD (unless you're high up enough to be able to expense the purchase), if you wanted a BB10 device you could use one on their network, but you had to buy it yourself (with a small discount through Vodafone if you wanted it), and unless you were one of a small minority of employees you had to pay for your own phone plan too. Same for iPhone/Android/WP.

At least it gave me an excuse to not have company email on my phone (I paid for the device, I'm not going to give them control and I will root or use custom ROMs if I want to)

I guess you could do much from having an learning session at an Apple store regarding business features of iOS. Blackberry is dead.. iOS & Android (vanilla) have the features to take over now.

At least your employer offers phones.
I'd have rather bought my own with my former employer (and use their apn/vpn) than have 2 year old mid range Android or ancient BB's forced upon me.. You were not allowed to use self bought phones for work

While I sit and stare at my 64GB Playbook languishing in the corner on its stand I would say you are easily pleased and have strange tastes IMO.

Browsing on the Playbook is like trying to wade through treacle, even Origami is still frustratingly slow (but a lot better than the built in browser).

Navigating between apps and using apps is slow and unintuitive when compared to either Android or iOS.

I don't know why I've kept my Playbook, probably because it's worth next to nothing and an angry buyer might come and throw it through my window if they bought it expecting to be getting a usable tablet...

Swipe up to bring up list of running applications is intuitive, better than the iOS or Android options. Found origami to be okay - definitely better than chrome on my increasingly useless N7. Although 5.0 on the N7 is worse than iOS8 on my 4S.

It is a great media player, primarily down to quality of screen and the speakers - nothing else comes close.
