So I was with Sky for many years but cancelled back to Freesat. I got Fibre from TalkTalk with Calls and TV Essentials. I don't have an antenna so can't use Youview box for Live TV, my indoor antenna doesn't work either and just takes up space.

Now I figured I could just use Youview for the On Demand services, especially Dave since it isn't on Freesat for QI and Red Dwarf for example but the lack of content is unbelievable. Now I am paying £4.25 for 12 months for services I can get online and on Xbox for free. It will be £8.50 for final 6 months. Anyone have some advice on what I can do? I don't think I could have gotten just Fibre and Calls without TV as deal didn't allow it.

Cancelling TV now would cause big fee as I have been Live since 17th but have only just checked out Youview since Sky just switched to Freesat today.

Can I make this worth having?

Couldn't you get an aerial installed?

Yeah I can and might have to I guess I can do it myself. Essentials only really has 3 or so channels that Sky Freesat doesn't so I just wanted to use those on demand without hassle of new antenna which was funnily enough removed by Sky when they installed my multiroom few years ago. Is Dave and channels like Quest on demand players available free online too? If so I am even sillier..

I just didn't figure it would only have like 1 episode of a show and a few more of another. Thought On Demand would have a lot more, I didn't think this through especially when I could have gotten NowTv, Netflix, Prime etc of all which would be much better with my new Fibre.. Lesson learnt!

Thanks for reply by the way.

Is there a reason why TalkTalk can't rebroadcast the channels over their own network? Presumably they already have the network in place for channels that don't come through an antenna, chucking BBC/ITV/4/5 onto it should be straightforward.

e.g. Virgin doesn't require an antenna, they receive feeds from the broadcasters (or take it off-air) and transmit on their network

Maybe you should have gone for BT and Infinity for they offer 20 channels for £7.45 a month.
You would still need an antenna for the Freeview channels though.
You can also get 14 channels in hd for an exta £3 a month.
You would have line rental on top of this and the full cost would depand on what Infinity package you would have went for.

That was naughty of the installer, did they actually take down the aerial ?

He did ask and we said it was of no use i think but times change

I guess i will make use of Youview, well no choice costs more to cancel even if i give box back than it would keeping it. Fibre and Calls are great though so not all is bad at the moment. Thanks for all replies

A bit late now, but TalkTalk do have 2 packages that are for Fibre and Calls without TV. The packages are called 'SimplyBroadband' and 'Fibre Broadband'. https://sales.talktalk.co.uk/product/broadband/simplybb

I wonder if installers are encouraged to remove aerials by Sky? Certainly makes it harder for people to switch back to DTT at a later date.

Unless it's damaged then there is no reason to remove aerials, as even if you have Satellite they are useful as a backup e.g. in bad weather or if the dish gets blown out of alignment!

As for 'set top' aerials, unless you live very close to a main transmitter forget it! DTT is designed for outside aerials, and the chances are internal aerials will not work well if at all. Get an outside aerial refitted and all will be fine with your Youview box.

When TalkTalk TV was Tiscali TV/Homechoice, many of the then-Freeview channels were simulcast via IPTV. I presume these continued for the customers who retained the original Tiscali TV/Homechoice and didn't switch to YouView?

Unfortunately TalkTalk closed the Tiscali TV service and moved everyone onto YouView, thus losing a USP and necessitating my purchase of an amplified indoor aerial.

They have made vague statements about simulcasting the main linear channels via IPTV in the future, which would enable more watch/record options and be attractive to flat-dwellers, but nothing has come of it.

Even now, the Huawei recording box can't record two freeview channels and one IPTV channel simulateously, something that the old Tiscali box could also do as well as simulcasting the main linear channels via IPTV, so they might want to sort that out first.
