Disconnect all the speaker wiring and carefully check for any broken strands of copper wire bridging any pair of speaker terminals. If the amp comes out of standby OK with no speakers connected (won't do it any harm) then that suggests it is a speaker/cable issue.

Check the connections at the speakers for strands of copper bridging the terminals and remake the connections as necessary. Also check the cables for any damage.

If the speaker connections are OK and the cable is in good health reconnect each speaker one at a time with the amp off then try to turn it on. If it comes on OK then that speaker is OK. Repeat till either you find which speaker is faulty or they all work OK.

Hopefully it will be a stray strand of copper wire shorting the speaker terminals somewhere. By remaking all the connections and checking there is no damage to the cables you should clear the problem.

as chrisjr says, check the speaker wiring. That's the most common cause for protection mode. The amp is protecting itself because of a short in the wiring and it's stopping you from using it before the problem is fixed.

If the amp is still stuck in protection mode after all the speakers are disconnected then you might have to do a full microprocessor reset. Be aware though, this wipes all the settings and puts everything back to factory default. Also, it's not a fix. If the wiring is still bad then doing a reset like this won't repair that; all it's doing is letting you start over.

1 Turn off the power using the Standby/Power Key.
2 Press the Standby/Power Key while simultaneously pressing INFO and BACK.
3 Once the display starts flashing at intervals of about 1 second, release the two buttons.

If in step 3 the display does not flash at intervals of about 1 second, start over from step 1.

I would disagree, the most common cause of protection error is amplifier failure - it's 'protecting' the speakers, NOT protecting the amp.

Assuming the amp would even trigger a fault if there was a short on the output, it wouldn't do so if the volume was turned right down anyway - but in the vast majority of amps I've repaired the protection circuit only monitors DC voltage on the outputs.

Thanks for your help. How do I take the speaker cables out of the amp as I had someone set it up for me?

Sure, fine, whatever. The vast majority of amps I've been to in the field, and also those I've fielded questions about, have had issues and gone in to protection mode because of speaker wiring issues. Po-tay-toes Po-tah-toes.

If that someone was a person you paid for the service, then get them back to put it right because they did a half-assed job. If it was a friend helping you out, then ask them to come back and help you out,.

If you can't follow the instruction manual and put a bit of wire in to a screw terminal without help then you're well out of your depth. It's a bit unfair asking someone to help you learn to drive and then springing on them they have to teach you to walk first.

If you want the UK manual go here

http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/downloads/productdownloads

Scroll down to the AVR 3313 and click the arrow on the right Then click on "Manual Documents" then the "Download" button next to "AVR-3313E2_ENG_CD-ROM_v00" which is actually a PDF.

From the troubleshooting section of the manual.

Quote:
“The protection circuit has been activated because the speaker cable core wires are touching, a core wire has come loose from the terminal, or a core wire is touching the rear panel of this unit. After unplugging the power cord, take corrective action such as firmly re-twisting the core wire or taking care of the terminal, and then reconnect the wire.”
