Sony BD updates.
There seems to be new updates for some older Sony Blue Ray players.
Name: Blu-ray player firmware to version M07.R.0631 Date released: 24/12/2014 Benefits and improvements: Improves the encryption security. BRAVIA Internet Video improvement. BD-ROM playability improvement. This update includes Cinavia™ content protection technology. Information about Cinavia technology is provided at the Cinavia Online Consumer Information Center at http://www.cinavia.com. Restrictions: only for use with Blu-ray players sold in Europe. Not all models are sold in all countries. I have down loaded as prompted but can't see any difference. Jeff. |

Nigel,
I did not say I was expecting to see any differences. It was just a comment. Chill....... As you say bug fixes. |

So the other two people in this post would go and have a look and see if their old Sony BD had any updates that might be useful to them.
Its news.... |

Not sure how Cinavia can be described as a "benefit" - maybe to the movie companies, not necessarily to the user

Why would you expect to?, it would be VERY rare for an update to produce a visible difference - unless it's to correct a bug that was giving poor quality.
Most updates are for bug-fixes. The only difference that I noticed afterwards was that the BBC iplayer has now been removed from the options list. The BBC iplayer had stopped working several months ago due to changes by the BBC and Sony said they could/would not fix it. The "on demand 5" and "sky news" players also stopped working last year and they still do not work even after this update, but remain in the list of options. Youtube still works ok. |

Sorry to bump this but my BDP370 got the update a couple days ago and also helpfully removed BBC iplayer .... looking around DS it seems this all happened back in September but the recent update (for me at least) seemed to remove it.
Maybe mine hasn't worked for months, I haven't used it for a while. |

You Tube app to go on some Sony and Panasonic devices
Just an update on this.... I see that the You Tube app will disapear from my BDP370 player in April 2015 and according to the link below other similar generation players will get the same 'update' including Panasonic smart devices.
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6098135?hl=en I always though smart devices were a likely problem to support and I think I'd certainly not buy any smart device without considering the smart services may well vanish after a couple of years. |

Combined with the forthcoming withdrawal of certain smart services, it seems these players are severely hobbled now. |

It said this app had changed and was no longer supported on this device after 20 April 2015. And they were correct, Youtube does not work at all on it now. Never buying any Sony stuff again. |

Never buying any Sony stuff again. ![]() Sony are only one of the many affected manufacturers, any who used the now closed services no longer work. |

Its my understanding that various manufacturers are not renewing licenses rather than the service providers stopping the apps. I know its in the small print, but whats the point of a smart tv, dvd ect, that gradually becomes less smart?
Don't worry though, you can always buy a new one, which will work for.......... |

Do the manufacturers actually pay the service providers?, or do the service providers pay the manufacturers? - I've always wondered what the situation was. Considering recent Sony TV's have a Netflix button on the remote control, presumably Netflix pay them?. |

I have seen various models from Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, that have stopped working on various apps. However later models carry on working, but the question is for how long? It surely means the manufacturers only need to update their software but are unwilling to do it probably due to cost. The fact remains that people were talked into paying higher prices for smart devices that are becoming less and less so, when they could have paid hundreds of pounds less and merely connected an add on such as a £30 Roko stick to achieve the same outcome. And of course if that stopped working you just connect another.

Just goes to show that really you need to either keep replacing equipment when it gets obsolete or use a PC based solution that you can keep updating.....until it becomes obsolete
![]() Hmmm, you can't really win can you, you just have to accept consumer electronics just don't last as long as they used to with regard to these extra 'smart' features |

I've just been perusing this thread.
So I started my Sony BD-P S480 (unused for several months) and went to the video menu. BBC iPlayer was missing (must have happened in a previous FW update). Demand 5 and Sky News still present. Tried starting these, but a message showed new update available. Selecting cancel wouldn't let me start the video apps so I had to accept the update. Demand 5 now starts, with a message "DEMAND 5 App will be discontinued on 7 May". That doesn't give me long to catch up on all the episodes of Gadget Show, had I not also recorded them
