The BBC are reporting this as a good news story, but could it not also be seen as a sign of us becoming parochial and insular in our music tastes?

Only on DS could someone make a good news story sound like it's bad.

Or a sign that there's been a lot of good British albums released this year.

Interesting that nine out of those ten albums are from male artists. A few years ago it seemed that the music industry was dominated by women (Florence, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Marina, Pixie Lott etc) but the boys really have dominated 2014 it seems.

The fact that almost half of the top 40 albums aren't by British artists suggests no.

Seems a bit reactionary to suspect jingoism. There are other more likely factors. Two significant ones being that there has been domestic output that has widely appealed to the British public this year and the other being timing.

Paloma is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Her album is so far ahead that the rest of the top 10. So happy to see her so high.

are you serious?? At least half of that top ten have been major worldwide hits, including America.

It's a valid point. Looking at that top 10, it is very bland and uninspiring.

I think bland rather than parochial, given that a lot of these artists have a bland "international" sound to them. The vast majority don't really have a British sound, unless you were to argue that we have fully cornered the market for male vocalist bed-wetter rock/pop. The two rock entries are more obliviously "British" sounding, but a long way from cutting edge.

Nevertheless, good news that our music can hold its own in an increasingly homogenised world.

None of them are dance albums either.

A few years ago, I don't think that would have been the case

Her full Promenade concert is on BBC Radio 3 tonight at 9pm.
The Proms are mainly classical music but a few, like this one aren't.

Artists who mainly write their own stuff, 1 female, 2 boy groups, 2 bands, 1 bunch of old timers, no black artists, a bit derivative, a bit homogenised, a bit predictable, nothing really new....business as usual. Probably nothing to do with being insular but pop music is no indicator of popular opinion......or is it?
