Great first episode imo, think this will definitely be a hit. Good way of reigniting the Kiely/Hennesey feud too. I was watching Ireland AM this morning and it will be on every Wednesday and Thursday. My only criticism would be the music - it just does not suit the show and it all and it's just plain old fashioned tbh. Red Rock needs gritty/dramatic music

Yeah the music is awful. I read in one of the press interviews someone describing it as being like a modern western so maybe they were going for that angle but it really doesn't suit the show. Irish TV drama is actually really bad when it comes to scoring their dramas. There was a load of criticism online about the score for Charlie which aired on Sunday night. Apparently it was like they'd just lifted the score from House of Cards. Despite rave reviews, I also think the score for Love \ Hate is awful and overdone.

The Irish Independent were pretty scathing in their first review of the show, criticising the lack of humour and an apparently lifeless script.

They make a valid point about the show's grey look but there's not a lot you can do when you're shooting in Ireland in the Autumn \ Winter. Personally I think the Independent is a rag with an anti TV3 agenda but that's just my own opinion. I didn't really find the pace sluggish either. It felt like a fast 25 minutes with a number of story arcs being set up - the David & Katie "Romeo & Juliet" arc, Michael's potential murder trial, the Garda & the schoolgirl, whatever agenda that woman who said she saw the fight has, the conflict of interest between the Hennessey daughter whose protecting her brother and her Garda boyfriend whose investigating him and the potential return of Bridget Kiely.

I thought it was entertaining enough, plenty of story for a half hour. Wonder why the two guys were fighting.

They made allusions to the Kiely - Hennessey feud so it's either a hangover from that or in true soap fashion they shared some deep dark secret like they were in a relationship or the supposedly upper class Michael was involved in criminality with Darren.

And a typical soap love story between warring families with Katie Kiely and David Hennessey.
Good first episode. Still in the "trying to work out who everyone is" stage but enjoyed it. No desperate Fair City acting either so that's a bonus. Interested to see where this goes

That review is absolutely spot on.

Anyway, the first episode confirmed my suspicions that it is NOT even a soap, but a "gritty" tv series. The intrusive camera work and high gloss sheen, along with the sparse atmosphere is the very antithesis of what makes a soap a soap. It has much more in common with The Clinic and Love/Hate than Corrie and Fair City. It's all far too grey and depressing too.
Completely false advertising from tv3 as far as I'm concerned.

Why not try giving it an actual chance rather than writing it off completely after 1 episode?

Of course there are going to be teething problems, show me a soap that didn't. If we all just gave up after 1 episode then we wouldn't have any TV shows to watch.

In any case, I'd imagine the producers will be eager to read critiques of the show to see what is hitting and missing and try to rectify it.

To be honest I got more of an Eastenders feel from it. All dark and moody with tension building throughout

First ever episode for viewers in the UK and anyone in Ireland who missed it :

Well worth a look.....the Irish Times were impressed anyway.

I think its a soap but a more stylized soap than what we're used to seeing given the filmic look of whatever they're shooting it on. Remember when ITV launched Crossroads and Night & Day? Crossroads looked like your typical soap whereas N&D looked more filmic, was heavily sound tracked and didn't follow the usual soap conventions but it was still a soap. Not every soap has to look like a carbon copy of EE or Corrie.

I thought it was a very decent first episode and am looking forward to the next one.

I hate the so-called "critics" who won't even give it a chance but still make assumption that its going to be crap.

Also, criticism that its "not a soap" is not valid. Is it not a good thing that you have a group of a actors/writers/producers etc. in Ireland coming together to make something slightly different rather that another run-of-the-mill soap (for which they would have been criticised!).

I liked the fact that there was a lot of on-location work rather than going for dodgy indoor sets at every turn.

They're trying to do something new and different. Give them a break.

As for "bad acting" - I'd suggest that anyone with that opinion didn't actually watch it. Certainly some of the performances weren't entirely polished but you're looking at actors (mostly very inexperienced) getting used very quickly to the pace and method of soap production. I'd expect all the rough edges to be sorted out within a couple of weeks.

There was nothing specifically bad about the episode apart from the awful music and the stereotype dumb cop.

The Irish Times are very positive in their review :

For an opening episode, I thought it was absolutely fine and very slickly and stylishly shot.

Aw, I'm really surprised they've blocked it outside Ireland I wonder if they're hoping to sell it to the UK and that's why they've blocked it?

I couldn't agree with you more. All of the above is spot on.

I watched it on the live stream on 3 Player last night and before it came on it was flagged as ROI only. Strangely enough, their new holiday show that aired before Red Rock was flagged as not being available online due to copyright and licensing laws and as far as I'm aware, it's a TV3 produced programme too.

I'd say they're definitely hoping to sell it in the UK and elsewhere. There seems to be a big push on international sales of shows and game show formats out of Ireland recently so it'd be a good money spinner for them if they got one of the digital channels to air it.

It's quite possible it might show up on one of the TV catchup sites in the next day or so, that might be the best bet for British viewers

Or maybe even Channel 5? They did air the first series of Love/Hate after all, although they seem to be taking their time in getting round to airing series 2

Yes, it is perfectly valid.
I'm a traditionalist when it comes to my soaps so I prefer when they stay within typical soap conventions like Fair City and Corrie, dodgy studio sets and all.
The dynamic camera angles (how many extreme close-ups did we get of mugs of tea last night!?) are extremely off-putting and it's trying too hard to be "slick" and "stylish".
That is just my opinion of course. It isn't for me so I'll stick to my other soaps.

It's certainly interesting that TV3 have blocked it outside Ireland. They may have one eye on selling it to a UK channel.

This is pretty good, I thought it would be rubbish going on TV3's past performance. They're showing The Guarantee after too - looks like TV3 have upped their game bigtime in response to the launch of UTV Ireland.

Enjoyed tonight's episode as well. We now appear to have three clandestine affairs on the go with Patricia Hennessey and the bloke who owns the cafe now added to the mix. Bridget Kiely looks like she will be good to watch too once they make her a bit more two dimensional than the harridan she was presented as tonight. A good first couple of episodes overall. I'll definitely be watching next week and I'll get into it even more I reckon once I start remembering all of the characters names.

I'm impressed with the amount of outdoor scenes. Too often the temptation is for soaps to stay mainly indoors.

It's good too that the Garda station is filmed in an actual large building with many rooms and corridors and not a TV studio, it makes it seem much more authentic.
