Eastenders - Dot Branning is a horrible person!
Any time "Nasty" Nick Cotton returns Dot just turns into a cow.
She kicked out Arthur "Fatboy" Chubb. She deserts all her extended family and friends. Covers up crimes Then does the "I'm lonely" saga when it blows up in her face! I wouldn't mind but why would she let Nick stay after killing her beloved grandson Ashley Cotton! Next week she refuses to believe he killed Emma Summerhayes indirectly. I don't like her much either but don't get me started.
Try searching the forum on "Dot posts" and you'll see its a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to her. |

I just think the whole Nick pulls one over on Dot SL is wearing too thin now. It's repetitive nonsense and tedious. Not sure if it makes Dot horrible, just irritating to watch the same old rehashed years later. The sooner they kill Nck off and save us from this repetitive SL the better.

I never liked Dot , sanctimonious and patronising and full of her own importance
And she did a dreadful job of raising her son |

I like Dot. She doesn't always get it right but I believe in her heart she does what she believes is right, which in my mind doesn't make her a horrible person. She's often torn between her family/friends and her faith which can't be easy for someone who is as religious as she is.

Don't forget she abused him as a child. When she was locking him up in the under the stairs for ages. That's child abuse. In the 80s she used racial slurs like p*ki occasionally. And she is a bigot. Like when she was telling Ronnie and Charlie to get married so her deity would love their child. See I thought G-d of the Christian faith loved all living animals? She covers up his crimes. He killed his own child and yet there he is. I get she is his mother but really a murderer of their own child?
to be fair she is still going along with him being locked up now in his room ![]() I think Nick emotionally abuses her, he knows how to get his own way and whilst she likes to think she does the right thing, I suspect she doesnt quite know how to. bit like edna in emmerdale trying to be a good christian |

Reg Cox Eddie Royal Ashley Cotton Emma Summerhayes What extended family has she deserted? The Brannings? They have barely bothered with Dot for years, she was left completely on her own to care for Jim before he moved into a care home Max, Jack and co couldn't give a toss. The only one who has helped Dot is Carol and she's had plenty of her own problems to deal with recently with her cancer. She hasn't really covered up any crimes either remember Dot doesn't know Nick was responsible for Roxy's car crashing. The only thing she has done is not phone the police about Nick being alive. Nick killing Ashley wasn't deliberate Dot probably doesn't blame him for that and I don't believe she even knows about Reg Cox or Eddie Royle. |

Dot's a legend and I'll always be happy to see her remain on the show. She's the only 'icon' of the show still standing (by that I mean, her character is instantly recognizable).
But there's no denying she's a very selfish woman when it comes to her Nick. As for her bigotry, I'd say the modern take on the character has somewhat left that behind. |

I think Dot is a soap legend too, along with the Amy Turtle's, Doris Luke's, Elsie Tanner's and Betty Eagleton's of SoapLand!! All outspoken, but 'well-meaning' people (!).
I still call her Dot Cotton!

She may be a legend, but she's still a silly old cow.

Surprised by these posts, as though Dot is a real person living next door. I see her as a character who fills the older, more religious, closer-to-dying part in contrast to the young cast members, and that's about it for me. She's made mistakes, she's judgemental, she's alienated people but it's who "Dot Cotton" is. I'd miss her terribly if she wasn't on the Square and can't see any other character filing her shoes. It's actually a testament to June's acting that Dot is so disliked; she's doing her job well.

I find all this Nick stuff totally panto and tedious to watch. I 'm only putting up with it on basis that hopefully Nick will be gone. |

I'm pretty sure she knows about Reg. Mark Fowler was the prime suspect, then it turned out to be Nick - didn't he escape to France or something??

She wasn't even supposed to be likable when she started, more of a hypocrite - spouting the bible left, right and centre but actually not a very good Christian at all for many of the reasons other posters have already mentioned! When she became some lovable granny i'll never know!
