my 6 month old female dog was spayed today at 9.30 am. I picked her up from the vet at 1.30. she is looking very sad, shes been sick 4 times, doesn't want water and wont lie down for long. is this normal please?

Yes she is still suffering from the anaesthetic the vet should have given you a leaflet explaining it all with emergency numbers etc .

thanks Mollipops.. the vet did say she might be sick but as we're in Greece, language is often a problem. and any leaflets will be in Greek.

She will probably be dopey for the rest of today. She will also probably be sore for the next few. Although her appetite should come back soon.(Some dogs may not be, it's an individual reaction.) Keep her quiet as you can so her incision can close. Watch her carefully so that she doesn't lick the suture line to the point of irritating it or pulling stitches.

Good luck.

shes sleeping now. proper resting sleep, looking more like her normal self. thanks Maggie. i'll be watching her. the vet said he would put a little vest or collar on her if she picks at the wound. hopefully shes over the anaesthetic and will perk up tomorrow.

We given ours some pain killers for a couple of days.
But they do recover pretty soon.

Ours have felt sorry for themselves for about 5 days then suddenly got up and said 'I'm better' then we've needed to keep them calm and try to stop them jumping around too much for another week. By 2 wks we were told they could go off lead but I kept them on a bit longer.
Hope she's ok once she's slept the anesthetic off.

Ours always seem to leap around the following day with extended periods of sleep between bouts. Worse part of operations we find is the trying to keep them quiet after wards.

there is no known breed to compare her with. a long haired terrier is the nearest I can think of. she was dumped in a bin with her little sister aged about 4 weeks and fortunately rescued but her sister died. there is no dog more loved than my little Lucy.
thanks . she is loads better now.
