I'm just hoping it stays this way and that I get to work and get back home again without being soaked as I was by yesterday's rain.

I do love when you send me off on a tangent with your postings, now I've got to get my head around this---> Late 14c., "of Greece or its people," from Greek (n.). Earlier Gregeis (c. 1200), from Old French Gregois; also Greekish (Old English Grecisc). From 1540s as "of the Greek language;" 1550s as "of the Eastern Church." From 1888 as "of Greek-letter fraternities." In venery, "anal," by 1970. Greek fire "inflammable substance invented 7c. by Callinicus of Heliopolis and used by the Byzantines (who in the Middle Ages were known as 'Greeks')" is from c. 1400, earlier Grickisce fure (c. 1200). Greek gift is from "Æneid," II.49: "timeo Danaos et dona ferentes." ...et cetera, as usual

Way to go, Hicky!
I am really pleased it has gone so well. Isnt polyamorous what we all used to do as teenagers? Date lots of people at once, then you might "go steady" with one of them, and then you might get engaged and then married? These days if somebody buys you a drink you are as good as married and stuck with them forever ![]() Mind you, in my day nobody was doing the deed with each other. Certainly not before the going steady or engaged part. (with the exception of my friend "yo-yo-knickers" who in hindsight was terribly misjudged and not a trollop, just polywhatsit ) Surely the average young man would be put off by such behaviour? Unless he just wants to get a free legover?

Is that Kieron's real voice or an Emma Willis impression? |

![]() Old English latin, from Latin Latinus "belonging to Latium," the region of Italy around Rome, possibly from PIE root *stela- "to spread, extend," with a sense of "flat country" (as opposed to the mountainous district of the Sabines), or from a prehistoric non-IE language. The Latin adjective also was used of the Roman language and people. Centurion: What's this, then? "People called Romanes they go the house?" Brian: It ... it says, "Romans, go home." Centurion [thrashing him like a schoolboy]: No, it doesn't. 'Go home?' This is motion towards. Isn't it, boy? Brian: Ah ... ah, dative, sir! Ahh! No, not dative! Not the dative, sir! No! Ah! Oh, the ... accusative! Domum, sir! Ah! Oooh! Ah! Centurion [pulling him by the ear]: Except that domum takes the ...? Brian: The locative, sir! [Monty Python, "Life of Brian"] Used as a designation for "people whose languages descend from Latin" (1856), hence Latin America (1862). The Latin Quarter (French Quartier latin) of Paris, on the south (left) bank of the Seine, was the site of university buildings in the Middle Ages, hence the place where Latin was spoken. The surname Latimer, Lattimore, etc. is from Vulgar Latin latimarus, from Latin latinarius "interpreter," literally "a speaker of Latin." "What Latin was to the learned, that their tongue was to laymen; hence latino was used for any dialect, even Arabic and the language of birds ...." |

I wish they had the HM’s pictures at the top of the page.
I haven’t managed to put names to the faces yet. Irish lass seems to see the world through Irish lass’s eyes, a view which few others share. |
