I Still haven't worked out what Ken said and why. It sounded like " mumble mumble big fat negro" and then the rest of it seemed misplaced unless there was a discussion in the middle we missed.
I think the programme is becoming unwatchable without live feed.
He said something about 'next time I want to make a fire I'll throw on a big fat negro' which used to be 'a joke' I know it's hard to believe but I heard people saying it when I was a lot younger.

Nadia then said that it's not as if Ken is an old man who lives in isolation, he mixes with all kinds of people through his job, and she has a point. Whether he really is that clueless, or whether he's being obnoxious on purpose, I have no idea. Either way he's not entertaining on any level.

Perez seems to be trying to make it 'The Perez Show' and while for the first couple of days I thought he was a good guy, I know think he's an attention seeking baby.

ShotMarvin transcribed it:
I don't think Ken's use of the word was that innocent though, was it? It's about context and the intent behind the use of that particular word. In Ken's case the intent was to offend, not to describe Alexander using an anthropological/legal term.

Here's a transcript of the conversation:
---
Ken: Ooh, there's a smell of burning.

Katie: It's sausages, but I don't think they are burning.

Alexander: You better get used to that, the way you goin'.

Ken (using a cod redneck accent): What I need to get the ovens going is a nice, big fat Negro. Hey looky here!

*Ken and Alexander laugh; Katie has a shocked look on her face.*

Alexander: You better not say that man or they gonna call you back up there again.

Katie: Careful...

Ken: He's a good lad.

Alexander: Hey Ken. Ken. If you ever get in the company of another black man, don't use Negro. Say black. Just black. Okay?

Ken: Right yes, but you see 'black' to me is just as offensive in a way. Because I don't like...

Alexander: But Negro is something we've established and we became black or brown. Yeah, we don't do the Negro thing.

Ken: No but the Negro's just Spanish for black, isn't it? *Turns to Michelle* What's Spanish for black?

Michelle: Negro.

Ken: Yeah, Negro is black.

Alexander: I think you're right, but you're not Spanish.

Ken: I know, but that's where it came from.

Alexander: But I'm giving you some information. In case you didn't know, it's just black okay. We don't use Negro anymore.

Ken: I'll use that, okay. Do you know what the old word for a black child is, very young?

Alexander: What?

Ken: Picaninny.

Alexander: Picaninny?

Ken: You may have heard that...

Alexander: Well that'll get your ass kicked too, alright?
---

So Ken did know the word Negro was offensive. He made reference to the fact that black was just as offensive to him. That and his use of the cod redneck accent and the use of the phrase 'nice, big fat Negro' in reference to getting a fire started can only be referring to the horrendous treatment of black people by whites in the American South historically. It sounds like something a KKK member would say. I know he was attempting a joke, and Alexander did laugh initially (perhaps out of shock more than anything else). But it came across to me as a taunt - he continually pushed the issue, trying to justify it because of the word's etymology.

Then when you thought they'd resolved the issue, he bizarrely decided to bring up the word 'picaninny'. Watching the whole thing back, I'm surprised Alexander didn't thump him actually. He showed remarkable restraint in the face of Ken's pigheadedness. It was a strange episode overall, and I'm surprised Ken only got away with a warning. It really does come to something when you're being told by Katie Hopkins, of all people, to mind your language.

Oh i see. I thought it had something to do with the accent he put on.

What was the name of the show with Dusty bin and Ted rogers twiddling his hand and giving people obscure and meaningless clues to win a bin? BB is getting similar.
We watch it and then have to figure out what might have really happened.

ShotMarvin transcribed it:

Thank you for that. Now the bit i thought i understood is different.

I heard it as "you had better get used to that (smell of burning) where you are going (to hell)

So a cod redneck is somebody in a call of duty game?

I think there must have been a huge discussion before it got to picaninni/picaninny/whatever?

I really liked the way Alexander spoke to him.

Yep, that's what it was

My aunt used to sing us a song ♫ Go to sleep my little picaninny
Mamma's going to smack you if you don't , hush a bye don't you cry, Mammas little baby, Mammas little alabalacoo ♫

My mum and nan heard me singing it to my doll one day and I got a whack from my nan saying it was racist.

Alexander handled it well, in the way that he's heard it a thousand million times but is tired of having to explain these things. I don't bloody blame him.

All the children in our family have had it sung to them. (apart from the smack bit, we edit that- and in the cilla lullaby) even all the black children. I have honestly never heard it as anything other than an endearment like sweetheart or darling. (same with papoose)
We sing about three kind mice too.

Thanks for the transcription - I think the fact that he said it in an accent refers back to the old jokes, and as you say, the songs. My nan would never have considered it to be racist, but we're talking 50 years ago here!

My aunt who used to sing it to me was black (as you know, many of my family are) so I didn't know how to respond as a child as they didn't tell me what was offensive about the lullaby.
That's why Alexander was good, he just calmly explained why.

I 'think' papoose is fine as it's accepted as a widely used word and not a denigrated one.

My nan's husband (my grandad) was black AND Irish, so she was especially keen to smack us about if we said owt wrong

As predominantely white kids we were brought up in the most anti-racist way you could imagine, and I only say that now as I see how lucky we were, so that we didn't know about racism until maybe TV showed it. It just wasn't in our experience.

We did SEE colour of course, we weren't blinded to it, but it wasn't seen as different in a way that one person was more important than the other.

It really was a shock to see how vindictive and widespread it could be/still is! If my mother hadn't have been a redhead, me and my brother and sister could also have presented as black and I certainly wouldn't have been prepared for such stark racism growing up.

Hello all

Moots if you scroll to the bottom and click 'mobile view' it's a lot easier to see.
Thanks Joni, thank God it is fixed!

I've just watched last night's highlights and I'm very unsure about the Jeremy/Chloe thing. She was so distressed, sobbing etc when she came out of the loo which I found difficult to understand - unless more had happened in there than she said.

I think it's as well Jeremy has left, he didn't seem very together, but the whole incident seemed strange to me??
I had the impression that Chloe milked the situation for all it was worth....

I guess someone forgot to hand out the medication!

I think Nadia has gone bonkers already. She actually pushed Cami away and ordered her off Chloe. Me! me! me! my glory. Not yours.
Not liking Nadia much - she seems to be turning into a Nolan Clone
It was made around 2011, didn't Gary look so much better than he did in BB?
Didn't he just! Maybe he "died" a few times after that appearance?

For me personally, think the top 3 are going to be Katie, Keith and Michelle with everyone else expendable
Totes agree richie!

3-2-1, I thiiink!
I have the subtitles on all the time, but sometimes the subtitllers can't cope.

Well, JoJo, I gave it a chance......I suppose one can watch almost anything if you feel it adds something to life's big or small debates. And I know that BB is about NOT liking someone but it would be awfully useful if, by contrast, one actually quite liked someone. It makes Wallender and Spiral seem jolly by comparison.

Oh dear, Moots......I knew this would happen. Total monster (self-made and media-made) is given enough air time to develop her brand. Because people are kinder than she is (not saying much) and some people are very much kinder (yes, you Moots) she occasionally allows herself to appear slightly softened. This is easy as being a 100% puppet spouting low level UKIP/Daily Mail soundbites is simple on twitter but not so easy all day. So, kind people say 'oh, she's not so bad.' Especially when seen alongside the likes of Ken, Jackson etc. Yes, she is...because this is what makes her so damned dangerous and gives her and her unbaked nonsense some sort of credibility.

Too right. She's a keyboard warrior who rather than put Ken in his place, chose to describe him as funny despite the bile he was projecting.

I saw someone complaining about it in a description of a doll on ebay once. I think perhaps there was some cut out of the version we know? but I am awfully surprised to find that picaninni means anything other than "precious little bundle"

She does. I have always liked her before. I think people behave out of character through boredom and irritation.

She was very kind to Perez when he had his "tit" moment. I like the way she laughs at herself.
