I am prepared to accept they have genuine feelings for each other, but the real is issue that they have not been able to control them and show some respect to her BF. If they had taken a step back and just been friends and waited until they both got out before doing anything else and most importantly until Steph had had the chance to make up her mind what she wants and to speak to her BF face to face, then that would have been the right thing to do. but maybe i am old fashioned!
