And you think dogs should be in a house with young babies/children knowing the terrible injuries many have received, dogs are wild animals and don't like intruders into their lives and also don't like anyone touching their toys or food.

I agree the children don't care, but their parents are the responsible ones so it's not really up to the children.

I hate air fresheners, i don't like breathing gas, the same as body sprays, used too much and the house could blow up.

I think a lot of houses use the fresheners just because they like a smell of lemons or roses , not to do with odours.

I think it must be my nose that can smell something other people cant because an awful lot are vile. Especially the ones taxi drivers have hanging up for some reason. I dont think i have ever been in a taxi with a nice one.


I don't think so because it is usually febreze or that other odour eating thing. I like candles and joss sticks, so it must be something in the "deodorising" bit that i hate.

Mind you, anybody that hasn't spent a week in a caravan with a permanently wet Alsatian cant fully understand the meaning of the word "stink"

hello Hicky Apart from the kitchen and the bathroom, all my rooms are carpeted and frequented by dogs.. Fortunately my Pack of hounds tends to be quite good at aiming at training pads and newspapers placed in 2 areas at last, although there are lapses.

The worst part was when I phoned the surgery to give them my mobile number and I could hear Amy-Louise crying her little eyes out in the background, but she would probably have been doing that if I was there holding her paw, being such a drama queen..

I have those plugin things. The existing carpet really is disgusting, and I can't use the carpet washer because I think the detergent from previous washings using machines that fail to suck up the dirty water has sunk in and rotted the underlay.

Hicky, you can't blame all dogs for the actions of a few out of control attack dogs. We were all wild animals once, in any case. I bet the first dog that crept into a cave to share it with a human being learnt to respond to feral grunts rather than words.

I am not on DS that much any more but I am so glad to have seen this Lesley.... it is a privilege to read your obituary and whilst it is sad, you brought David alive in your blog and represented him with such dignity.

Hi Moots, from what i read when there's a terrible occurrence with a child/baby and a dog they have always said, "I don't understand the dog has never acted like that before", i bet there was times when the dog did show some signs of aggression, like towards another dog, but they just ignore it, dogs don't like intruders on it's patch and some could see a baby as a young dog and most male animals kill the young of other females as they don't want them around.
And considering we can't actually talk to dogs then we will never be able to explain anything to them, they will do what comes natural to them.

It is almost unheard of for a dog reared from a pup as part of the family and kept indoors and fed well to attack its own family.
In practically every case the dog was kept outside, was passed on or rescued and often underfed and underexercised.
Even then, it is still rare.

Dogs DO speak to us loud and clear and let us know their intentions, and we have to make the effort to learn how to understand.
A lot of people think of them as objects rather than people, and so miss signs of distress or a warning.

The do have a type of language i suppose, a growl seems to warn, a snarl seems more serious, a bite sure is a hint.
Not sure what there is to understand about that.
But a sudden trigger and the dog can change back to being wild, i would have thought.

I can’t stand the air freshener things and I don’t know how people can have them in smaller houses. We’ve tried them in our hall when one of our cats has been particularly ripe and it just overpowers that very large area with a double ceiling height of about 24".

Yesterday we went to a new Garden Centre for lunch and the sickly smell of vanilla from the candle display on the way there was so sickly it completely put me off eating so I left without eating.

It is a bit more sophisticated than a growl or snarl, but yes, if you hit a dog with a stick dont be surprised if it savages you.
You are right in that any dog can snap if provoked, but a sustained attack is something completely different and very rare. A lot depends on the breed too.

It is horrible when dozens of candles are stacked up together reeking. I was completely lost in ikea yesterday and by the time I had fruitlessly circled the candles and plants six times looking for the secret short-cut I was a bit queasy, even though one candle on its own is rather nice.
We came out without buying anything because I couldn't bear any more traipsing and standing in queues. I think we would be better going midweek at night when it is less crowded. Unless everyone has the same idea and its worse?

Hicky, dogs are able to communicate much further than by just using using growls and snarls. I know what mine are saying by the position of their tails, what sort of wagging the tails are doing, what their ears are doing, the position of their eyes, and very many other tiny clues. Even their barks have different meanings

Took Amy-Louise for a check up today. She behaved very well and the v e t was pleased with her.

She is such a scream, and has been proudly showing off her scar to the other dogs - I think they are all getting a bit bored with it!

The groomer should have come today, but I was stood up., with no explanation. This is the third time a groomer has done this to me, and even more annoying because I phoned the firm on Friday to confirm the date and time.

I think I shall just let Em and Zac be shaggy dogs from now on....

Don't they just comb their hair, what do they do that you can't?

They understand what I say to them too. I must say they do get a bit worried when I bark or growl at them! This is a very effective way of breaking up a squabble
