OK so I'm trying to get to grips with my new 2000T. Is there any way to stop it turning its self off (some power saving feature I presume?) as it won't let you watch 'regular TV' when off as it cuts out the signal.

Please excuse my non-use of technical jargon, I don't really understand a lot of this stuff. I just want to watch the telly without the digbox on like I could with my old Humax (RIP).

The best solution is to buy an aerial booster/splitter, so that you can have a separate feed to the TV. This also means that you can record two separate programmes at the same time, while also watching a third directly on the TV.

Alternatively, there is an option in the Settings menu whichallows you to turn on the RF-out signal, which I believe will enable the signal to pass through, even when the box isn't active.

Mine never turns itself off, but it's a new box they might have added this option. Again, check all the menu options.

Turn off Automatic Power Down (Menu button>Settings>System>Power Management>Automatic Power Down. If your box has the latest firmware then turning off "Power saving in standby" from the same Power Management menu will give you pass through of the aerial signal when the Humax is in standby.

Thanks all. I found that 'automatic power down' menu and turned it off so I'm happy for now. Will look into a splitter though, what sort of thing should I be looking for (an eBay etc. link would be nice).

When you put the Humax into stand-by does the TV keep working?

If the answer to the above is Yes then you don't need anything else.

If however you do need to split the aerial feed what device you need will depend to some extent on what signal level you are getting off the aerial.

If the signal is weak then a powered splitter would be the best option. If the signal is very strong than a passive splitter would be all you need. Somewhere in the middle then you might get away with either.

Get it wrong and you can screw up reception big time. If the signal is low then a passive splitter will make it even lower which could mean you start getting picture break up where previously everything was OK. If the signal is strong and you use an amplified splitter you can get overload of either the amplifier or the Humax/TV input which can screw up reception as much as having too little signal.

So the first thing to check is what sort of signal level you are getting. The Humax should be able to display Signal Strength and Signal Quality and most TVs can as well. The important figure here is Strength.

Was there an option for "Power saving in standby"? If not you need to update to the latest software which may save you the cost of a splitter.

I don't belive there is but I don't know how to update the software I'm afraid.

Thanks for that but I'm not too good with computers and a lot of that is just gobbldygook to me. I guess I'll just have to struggle on with it.

Why can't things just work? My kettle and toaster don't need re-programing constantly!

The easy way to do it is to connect the Humax to the Internet by plugging one end of a network cable into the network port of the Humax and the other end into your router and leave the box in standby overnight (ie dim red light on front). The box doesn't need to be connected to a TV overnight so can be temporarily moved to be near the router overnight. When you wake the box up it should tell you that it has automatically downloaded the update and offer to install it for you.

Sorry but a PVR is a much more complex item than a toaster and most consumer electronics with a degree of complexity does require software updates.

Have you connected the Humax to the router before? If not you need to check the network configuration in the set-up menus to make sure it configures correctly. It should get all the information it requires from the router automatically but just in case...

Go into the set-up menu and select "System" then "Internet Setting" then "Configure LAN". Make sure it is set to DHCP on the top line then it should automatically get the network set-up from the router when you connect.

OK so I've got the Humax plugged into the router and it seems to be playing nice, iplayer etc all available. It has updated but still no 'pass through'. I'll see what happens overnight.

Waiting overnight dosn't update the settings for the power saving. It needs to be updated manually as it won't know that you want the other option. Mine certainly does not change by itself.

Do you mean that there is no pass through or that the Power Saving In Standby option has not appeared in the Power Management Menu?

Under the 'Power Management' menu I have 'Power saving in standby' and Automatic power down'

With the first 'off' there's no TV signal for normal TV. I've got them both 'on' for now.

I hope this isn't stating the obvious but it needs to be ruled out: can I assume that you've actually connected a separate aerial lead between the Out port on the Humax box and the aerial In on the TV?

Power Saving In Stand-by should be OFF. If it is ON the aerial passthrough does not work with the Humax in stand-by.

So I've discovered Chris. If you follow this llink there does seem to be a way of reprograming the machine for passthrough when in power saving mode but it's a bit too technical for me to follow.

All's working fine for now anyway, very happy with it now I've found the off switch for the power saving.

What on earth are you talking about? You have the latest software and all that is needed is under Power Management change the setting Power Saving in Standby from on to off. What exactly is too technical about that?

It's dead easy. If you have ever downloaded a file and copied a file to a USB stick then you can update the Humax.

The instructions are a bit light on how to extract the required update file but that is easy enough.

Download the Zip file at the top of the section. Remember where it downloaded to and then locate the file on your computer. Simply double click on the file and it will open much like a normal folder showing the two files contained in it. Then copy the hdr2000t_upgrade.hdf file to a USB stick. It works pretty much the same way as copying from any regular folder on your computer, no special skills required.

You're right David_Jones5 did mention that the Power Saving option had appeared in the settings. So not entirely sure why he is mentioning the firmware upgrade now as that would seem to be unnecessary?

So if the Power Saving setting is set to OFF then the aerial passthrough should work when the Humax is put into standby. So if it isn't then either...

1/ The firmware update is broken and the setting is having no effect
2/ David_Jones5 is actually switching the Humax off at the mains which will kill the passthrough regardless of the Power Saving setting.

It certainly works for us and lots of other people who have reported success. It would be very unusual to have a faulty software download upload correctly (because of the built in checks) so I would regard it as an unlikely but not impossible explanation.

3/ There is no aerial cable from the aerial out on the Humax to the TV.

Corruption during the flashing to the unit's memory perhaps?

Though does strike me as unlikely that corrupt firmware would be that selective without also affecting other aspects of the machine's operation.


Well he does say in an earlier post that there is, in response to another poster asking if there was such a lead.

Just occurred to me that there could be an option 4

4/ The TV is still set to the HDMI input the Humax is plugged into and the "No Signal" is actually because there is no HDMI input rather than there being no TV signal.

My TV does not auto return to the tuner after using an HDMI input. Mind you it does prompt to change inputs after a few seconds.
