How do I go about removing my details from my dogs chip, since my soon to be ex wife will probably be keeping the dog?

When ours were chipped we were given phone numbers etc to ring to change details ours has a charge for doing so but I would guess that is the way to go. Although perhaps it may be safer for the dog to still have two contacts if anything happened ? perhaps something to consider.
It was done by the rspca before we took her home, I'll give them a ring, I'm going to miss my dog probably more than I'll miss the the wife now.

If it was done by a rescue the dog probably isn't yours legally, when you sign for it you agree that it remains the property of the rescue usually.
Phone up the chipping company who have your details, they should be able to change it for you

Eek is that true? So technically they could come and ask for the dog back and you couldn't do a thing about it, as it's not really yours? Think I'll stick with my bought and paid for pooches, even a breeder who makes you sign contracts stating the dog must go back to them if necessery, and chips their pups before sale, let's you put your details down as the owner!

Yes many rescues operate like that, it makes rehoming them more difficult as they have to be returned to the original rescue or you can be sued never heard of it happening but most rescues are very careful not to take on dogs from other rescues.

The difference is you pay a breeder a massive amount of money for a puppy. A rescue you make a donation that probably barely covers a weeks care. All rescues worm, flea and vaccinate dogs then get them checked over by a vet. And usually when people adopt they 'donate' around £120. If the dog has been in rescue any more than a few weeks that doesn't cover their care never mind vets and treatments. Food etc.
I've never heard of a rescue just deciding they want a dog back. Why would they? The majority are at busting point so I highly doubt they'd just start taking dogs back unless they had reason to believe the animal has been abused in some way. Which is great because the abuser has no right to the dog. Given the amount of pedigree dogs in rescues it's clear those breeder contracts aren't worth the paper their written on.
Not that I'm one of those 'why buy from a breeder when there's plenty of dogs in rescues' brigade. I think when you get a dog you go whichever way you want since at the end of the day it's your dog and your responsibility. But I don't think it's unfair of rescues who often see dogs and cats returned for the most pathetic reasons (doesn't match the curtains etc) want to know that should that dog be abandoned/go missing it would be returned to them.

No I don't think that's unfair either to expect the dog is returned to the rescue it came from if needs be, and can see why they would want to do their utmost to guarantee that, and I would have no problem with it, same as I wouldn't have a problem with a breeder wanting the same thing. What I wouldn't like though, is the fact that the dog stays the property of the rescue legally, it would always be at the back of my mind that however attached I am to it, it's not really my dog and I couldn't deal with that. Maybe it's just me, but when I get a pet I like to know it's mine lock stock and barrel and that nobody can come and try and claim it as theirs, or worse, be right about it. I know that's a bit irrational and extreme, and nobody probably ever would, except in films, but you never know and I'd rather not take the chance!!

Yes we had a bit of a night mare with a small rescue, we had Duncan for 4 years and had been dealing with his allergies and other health problems costing us a fortune, the rescue suddenly decided they didn't like the treatment he was receiving and wanted him back - took quite a fight to keep him. Luckily our vet was very much on side as he knew how much we had spent and how much we cared for him but it could have easily been very different outcome. It was only after we had problems we looked further into the rescue and it wasn't uncommon for them to do this, seems the lady in charge wasn't exactly honest or trustworthy.
