I am growing a beard and just now it is very messy. I have some trimming "tools" but nothing that will keep on top of a beard. More like just trimming the edges or shaving it all off.

What do other beard owners use? Also, how do you wash and take care of your beard?

I'm lucky enough to be able to grow a really good beard!! I'm 27 but I look so bloody young so it's a blessing for me that I can grow one. I chop and change the style of it now and then...getting rid of the bits between my chin line and upper lip for example, or keeping it really short and tidy, or letting it grow quite thick. It's really dark. Anyway, I don't find beard trimmers very good at all. It all depends on the the type of hair/beard...my hair feels quite corse. I use a small pair of nail scissors and just trim it up using them every now and again and that works fine for my beard, although I depending on what the feel of the hair is like and how it grows, some people do need a proper trimmer I thin. Saying all of that though, Gillette have brought out a thing called the Gillette Pro Glide. I saw it on offer in Boots over Xmas and bought the last one off the shelf as it was so cheap. It's a beard trimmer, but it also has a blade on it for the edges of your beard and it has 3 interchangeable heads which you can use depending on how long you want the beard. It's also a razor too. I've used it a few times and its actually quite good.

I've got a massive thick black beard that for a couple of years now I've maintained myself. I've let it grow longer the last few months now I think it needs some professional help!

My advice would be to only wash with soap/shampoo/beardwash or whatever every few days as these strip natural oils out, just was plain water the other days. My beard has a much bushier texture this way. I don't use any of this fancy beard oil, just some good general oil such as Palmer's. Only a tiny amount mind! Oh and moisturise the skin underneath to stop dry skin and itching.
