I am using iphone 4 & want to play my music remotely that is stored on a WD 3tb Mycloud Personal Storage whilst at work etc.

The official app does not work ! Tried speaking to WD but getting no where

Please can someone recommend an app that will to do this? Apps i have seen only work locally?

I presume by what you have posted that you want to link across the internet to your home router then onward to the WD hard drive to access the audio files when away from home?

That is not so easy as running an app on your phone while at home. The reason is that when you are at home both the phone and the WD drive are on the same network so connecting the two is relatively trivial.

However when you are away from home the phone and WD drive are on two totally separate networks. If you knew the internet IP address of your router you could get as far as connecting to that but going any further will require some configuration of the router to allow you to access the WD drive. And of course if you can access the drive so, potentially, can any Tom, Dick or Harry Hacker as well. So you have to make the connection secure as well.

Factor in that the router internet IP address could change randomly, (unless you ask for a static address), and things start to be come less easy.

The WD app worked perfectly on my iPhone 5 and the 4S.

Note that you need to have a decent speed internet connection at the receiving end. I can't get anything via 3G but on my works wifi it works fine.

Dont bother with that hassle.

Create a google play music account.
Sync to your collection

Install google play app on phone

Unlimited streaming of your music collection sorted

I don't know how the Google music app works. However, I have access to my nas drive over the Internet which allows me to copy anything (not limited to music) that is on it from/to my drive using an iPad.

I just do it when I have wifi access ( which in the modern world is very often).

The thing that annoys me about iOS is there is new user-accessigle file system so you can't copy music to the Music folder or whatever, you have to use an app to open it.

With play music you install it on home pc, set it to sync too your music folder.

You then have unlimited streaming and downloads through the mobile app

The op asked about music and this is the cleanest solution ive ever found.

I'd love to be able to do this on mine, as I have a Synology NAS drive and the Music app for that is quite nice and does exactly what it says on the tin, but my 3G reception is horrible.

Not quite true. I use an app called Filebrowser, and have done for a number of years, which gives access to my nas drive and allows me to copy music to and from the iPad.

It is how I access all my music (and movies). I don't buy from iTunes.

It doesn't give you access to the iOS file system, that was my point.

The app has its own file system, with the files only accessible through that app, they're not accessible system-wide like on Android.
