I don't know why it has grown so much, but I for one am very pleased and will take a stab at guessing. I think the show has built up a strong reputation over the years to tell some really gripping, well written stories which could explain the rise in audiences, good word of mouth etc and the show is now reaping rewards. And each two part story is very different and self contained. So even if you miss a story, it doesn't necessarily matter, as a casual viewer you can easily dip in and out. Each story is very different, so I imagine it caters to a very broad section of the viewing audience. If you like action, horror or a straightforward whodunnit, Silent Witness provides those elements in every story.

Plus the main cast is now very settled and it's a talented cast of strong actors.

That's a good point. I think the stories over the last couple of series were strong, but this year I think they've gone up a notch. The scheduling also helped. Another thing that worked was the trailers. The sniper one got my friends talking before it aired and they didn't watch any episodes last year or the year before. It picked up some casual viewers and kept them.

I think Silent Witness is winning as people prefer to fast forward the ads so Broadchurch will look higher when that us included. But well done to Silent Witness great show and long may it continue

I also think Clarissa and Jack are likeable characters

ED and EE both deserve boosts from Tuesday. I really enjoyed ED with the shock twist involving Rachel. Corrie needs to take note and keep some aspects of storylines away from spoilers. It's great not knowing exactly what is going to happen.

Thanks for reposting this. Fascinating. I wonder, with others shows now beginning to consolidate equally as impressively as those which make up that list, how much more diverse the 2015 equivalent will look when it's released next January.

I hope when BARB sort out ratings for tablets/smartphones/mobiles etc, that they are added to weekly figures. I think some shows would be boosted by up to 2m or more in ratings. Ratings might be similar to the highs of the mid to late noughties.

The figure of 4.2m requests for 'The Empty Hearse' is astonishing - it's almost enough to make me want to take a sabbatical from this thread until BARB include the iPlayer figures, because what's the point!!

FWIW it's worth I thought Cucumber was great fun, although definitely an acquired taste and I hope it doesn't do too well, because as we know that would only lead to C4 squeezing every last drop out of it until the show's very name is the stuff of Ratings Thread nightmares

RTD has said Cucumber is a one-off but Banana might continue if it does well for E4

Some of that 4.2m iplayer requests will already be included in the officials by BARB. At present anything that is watched on a TV in a BARB household will be included, whether that's live, recorded or iPlayed. Anyone who iPlayed onto a computer, phone, tablet etc will not yet be included.

My fairly average budget range Freeview TV/PVR setup has Iplayer on it, which gets used more often than recordings when it comes to the BBC channels. Commercial channels I still record though to skip the ads.

That's a very disappointing rating for Cucumber. I can see why it got the rating though.

Was still a cracking bit of telly though.

That is shocking for Cucumber expected at least 2 million,C4 really has a problem getting people to watch their dramas.

Thanks DMN.

Cucumber looks like it'll drop in the ratings. Were less people watching TV last night compared to the previous Thursday? Death In Paradise has had a 29% share for three weeks.

Corrie gives away ALL its spoilers a good 6-9 months before they happen, so by the time you do see the storylines you presume you have seen them already, perhaps that's one of the reason its ratings have been falling.

Emmerdale on the other hand quite often keeps its storylines secret or the spoilers lie.

Cucumber was an appallingly bad piece of television full of clichéd stereotypes and deserved the rating that it received. Just what was RTD thinking of when he penned this awful drama ? Do Channel 4 even read the scripts of shows that they have commissioned. This was certainly no QAF and deserves to rot away slowly.

Was never going to get that although I expected it to be slightly above 1m not slightly under. Didn't think Cucumber was too bad, it wasn't very "in your face", so quite watchable for a mainstream audience, with a likeable lead. Queer as Folk in Slippers.

Banana was one for the kids. Felt like a cheap retread of QAF and there simply to fulfil the multi platform requirement and the needs of the Cucumber/Banana/Tofu joke - which was more than adequately and not too subtly explained anyway in the amusing opening scene of Cucumber.

Can I ask a serious question? Pardon me if i come across as ignorant, but is there a need in 21st Century Britain to show a drama series about how gay people are perceived in the world? Like any other group of humans, it seems only the extreme end of the spectrum are portrayed. If gay people are shown on TV it's usually the OTT camp stereotype who thinks sleeping around and ABBA are the be all of life. If people on documentaries about benefits are shown it is always the sponger that is shown, never the guy who hates being on benefits and wants to go to work.

In my opinion showing gay people in such a negative, care free light as Cucumber did, will do far more to harm the public perception of what it is like to be gay than anything else will. I understand it that in this day and age, homosexuality is largely accepted and not frowned upon compared to the 80's and 90's. This programme has the potential to put public feeling back by 20 years.

I thought Cucumber would be good for 2m after all of that promotion. It has had a mixed reaction too so I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop.

Sometimes I wonder is there much point for huge marketing budgets? Posters, displays in Westminster and that's all you get.
