Yes, and TV Burp was also big and special and presumably Harry realises he couldn't top it either. Very few comedians get a series like that, running for so long in primetime, once in their career, let alone twice. The argument is that by saying Harry has only done TV Burp and everything else was a waste of time is daft, it's like looking at Jerry Seinfeld's career and writing the whole thing off because The Marriage Ref was crap and he's only really been famous for Seinfeld, ignoring the fact it was a huge success.



Yes! Yes yes yes! Saying anyone could have done Harry's job and that it was "the researchers and writers" who found the clips ignores the fact that Harry was one of the researchers and writers. Why is it so hard to imagine Harry worked really hard on TV Burp and did lots of it himself? Yes, there were other writers - and I note from the credits of Stars In Their Eyes that a couple have come with him to write this, so it's hardly a case of Harry floundering away from them - but so what?

Ant and Dec use writers. You may as well argue that it's wrong to commend Ant and Dec for being good on I'm A Celebrity because the celebrities would be entertaining regardless, the researchers come out with the challenges and the writers write the script. If you're arguing Harry Hill is peripheral to the success of TV Burp, you absolutely should be saying the same thing about Ant and Dec. Michael McIntyre uses writers, a lot of his stuff is written by the former Big Breakfast presenter Paul Tonkinson (you'll note he's credited on McIntyre's show). If anyone can do what Harry does, anyone can do what McIntyre does.

And TV Burp wouldn't have worked without Harry. As mentioned, the clips themselves generally weren't funny. If they were funny, it would be Rude Tube or Commercial Breakdown. Or indeed Now You See It, which clearly isn't as good as TV Burp and I'm not watching it. Because I watched TV Burp for Harry Hill. And the other point is that TV Burp wouldn't have worked without Harry because it wouldn't have existed without him. He came first, not the format.

I don't wish to hammer this to the ground but I will not see Harry Hill considered as some kind of chancer who got lucky by walking past an office while they were trying to find a presenter for a format. He is an exceptional stand-up comedian and TV Burp was an exceptional show, and he was the absolute driving force behind it. He hasn't had a show as popular since but so what? It was a once-in-a-career thing. He could have stayed on post-watershed C4 his entire career where three million would have been a success.

It's not the genre per se it's the calibre of celebrity. In particular the more dysfunctional the better attitude. If you compare IAC viewing figures a decade ago with CBB there is a reason the latter has fallen away. IAC is low brow but ITV have managed to steer away from tawdry being the driving force. It's held a mainstream audience but CBB has taken the shock/tawdry route. It can pull an audience who enjoy such things but they are limited and are easily bored. So ever more tacky manufactured it has to be.

Have to say that "Kate Humble Into the Volcano" is the best programme title since "Pointless Celebrities"....

Good timeshift for Last Tango to stay above 7m, and a ridiculously small one for EastEnders on Friday 2nd, from 8.02m to just 8.39m. I know we're used to this by now, but normally it at least manages to add 0.5m despite the omnibus.

Can't believe Mrs Brown's last year repeat got 5.41m at 00:34 on NYE. It's a phenomenon.

Shame the stupid scheduling, number of repeats and BARB methodology prevented the show posting two bona fide 12, 13, 14m ratings this Christmas. Those numbers were there for the taking.

I doubt they would have gone that high. Mrs Brown's Boys would have cleared 10m for both had the repeat been several days later.

Its an incredibly solid Sunday night line up for BBC and ITV at present dont look like they have anything to challenge it.

Disney's Bambi scored 2.3m last Sunday for C5, by some distance the channel's most watched programme of the week.

I never cease to be amazed by the low reach figure of Sky Sports 1. We're always being told that Sky only survives because of Premier League football, but even in a week of big matches and people being at home, they can only muster 5.7m watching for three or more minutes. What's that equivalent to, 2-3 million homes?

The last I heard, Sky Sports subscriptions across all platforms was around 8m and that's households, not individuals.

Incidentally, BT Sport 1, which is available in far fewer homes, maybe half of what Sky Sports is, and they get a reach of 4.1m.

People like magic shows and the mix with you tube bits and pieces and failed tricks made it quite an entertaining 30 minutes. I can see why 5 million watched. Far better than Stars in their Eyes which was almost like what a Harry Hill parody of the show ridiculing it inside TV Burp would be like

Oh wait.....

As for the BBC putting quality first over a 5 million rating show then they would be renewing the similar rating but AI 90 show that was Our Zoo.

So ratings are more important to the BBC than quality I think we have to conclude.

And another one is gone! Another boost to ratings to come?

I see that BARB has the New Year Day editions of Mrs Brown and Miranda dead level on 9.51m.

Top 10: BBC1 beats ITV by 6 to 4
Top 20: BBC1 beats ITV by 13 to 7
Top 30: BBC1 beats ITV by 21 to 9

An ass-whupping at every level.

Other comments on the official consolidated excl repeats Top 30 (the only one that matters ):

- the Bake Off rating never ceases to amaze - it blindsided everyone, and it must have been one of those never to be repeated alchemist's moments when all the forces came together to create ratings gold - the top rated regular programme on telly - about baking cakes!

- EE just scraping into the top 20 - ouch!

- amused to see the Queen concert so (artificially) high (above EE!) and nipping at the heels of TXF

- MBB being ranked almost on a par with the cruddish BOAF revival rankles (though won't be an issue in the 2015 chart! )

- Downton well downed by the Midwives - not even close!

- Sport Relief pushing close to CIN, apparently

- the whiffily low ratings of some big hitters, particularly from November onwards - SCD, MBB, Miranda, CIN, maybe IAC too

I remain convinced something happened with BARB in or around November; whether it has rectified itself now I don't know - overnights and officials in January seem reasonably in line with expectations now!

As well as EastEnders down at number 19, we have Corrie only just making the top ten.

Both soaps will be hoping for big big things from their live episodes in 2015.

You need hits as well. You can't have a channel full of shows nobody watches. I think Our Zoo deserved another go and if ratings didn't improve, can it.

The Crimson Field was more worthy of a recommission when you compare its ratings to Our Zoo, Atlantis and The Musketeers.
