Just seen this on the Media Guardian website

Quote:
“Broadchurch dips to ratings low of 6.1 million after big return last week

It was warmly welcomed when it returned to ITV last week, but the second episode of the new series of David Tennant and Olivia Colman drama Broadchurch fell to a ratings low of just over 6 million viewers.

The second of its new eight-part run was watched by 6.1 million viewers, a 22.4% share of the audience from 9pm on Monday.

It was 1.5 million viewers down on the 7.6 million (30.1%) who saw the drama’s much-anticipated return last week, and fell short of its previous lowest audience, the 6.3 million who watched episode five of its first series in April 2013.

Broadchurch still did enough to see off BBC1’s Silent Witness. Now into its 18th series, it had 5.5 million viewers (22.1%), also from 9pm.

The consolidated figure for the first episode, which includes people who recorded it and watched it in the seven days after transmission, currently stands at 9.9 million.

9.9m consolidated then! WOW!

1.7m, that's the highest Doctors rating for some time.

Father Brown doing really well, very enjoyable.

Big Cast shake up is correct, they are what on their 3 generation of cast with only Emilia Fox left from the second.

I thought that, ITV daytime isn't their natural home, but I struggle to see where else they could put them as ITV block the idea of a One Show Competitor by airing so much soap. Try them out with a Breakfast Format maybe, can't be any worse than GMB? They are an excellent presenting duo though (and the success of Bake Off is down to them as much as the success of IAC is down to Ant and Dec) so they just need a format they can work with- (I think if Miranda drops out they'd do an excellent job on the Generation Game reboot) The show itself was funny and warm and well produced so its not through lack of trying- I hope it does grow as people find it though

Well, I watched it last night, thought I won't have time to watch the rest of the series because I'll always be working when it's on. I enjoyed it and it was of course very similar to Light Lunch which was a fantastic show in its pomp - although it didn't last very long, less than a year before it made way for the inferior Late Lunch which itself lasted less than a year.

But the slot does seem really odd. Presumably any earlier and it starts getting too close to Loose Women and the other shows that revolve around topical chat - but then 4pm seems too late, especially as there's a cookery spot in it. I don't know how that fits into people's schedules. I think it might suffer from too many shows of a similar vibe around the same time, especially on ITV.

At least it reminded me of Light Lunch so that was nice, and it inspired me to watch a few episodes on YouTube. It was great fun at the time and it did seem really different to everything else on the telly. Kudos to ITV for doing this show now, and it emphasises how little effort C4 are putting into making daytime distinctive, it probably has the dullest daytime schedule of all the channels.

It was a great period, that, when Light Lunch finished you had Wogan's Web for a few weeks. Heaven knows how today's students cope, no grants, no jobs at the end of it and nothing on the telly during the day.

Phenomenal! So far that's a total of 2.3ish million isn't it? Looks like Broadchurch has nothing to worry about.

And despite its continued success its another much maligned show on here.
It held up against Benidorm last year and is now head to head with BC.

She is Silent Witness for me. Think it's much better than in the Amanda Burton era.

It never really had much to worry about but its figures from here might be down looking at this weeks overnights.

Is that 9.9m Broadchurch's final rating or from the penultimate update?

Ether way it's a terrific rating. Bigger than every rating from the last series except the finale and bigger than anything on over Christmas except the fireworks!

I'm not sure. I'm sure DMN or ronant will tell us the final ratings (hint hint)

It's a brilliant rating!

A brilliant rating consolidated-wise for Broadchurch but it doesn't take away from the drop in the much more valuable overnights. Will it make up the week-on-week loss?

Very strong ratings all round at 9pm despite my disappointment at Broadchurch's figure. EastEnders is getting close to Coronation Street.

No way. In fact neither appeared on the last run for Sport Relief and nobody missed them and Mel did the last Comic Relief run solo too.
I think Ant & Dec would be missed from I'm a Celeb don't you? They're all right in small doses I find.

Also on the subject of a Breakfast format. They all ready tried that when they presented the last half hour of RISE

well its the ads that pay for the show,so thats why overnights count.
Its commercial television.
Advertisers want to be in the slots where ratings are good....and they pay for that privilege.

Pointless over 4m and 1m ahead of The Chase should be noted. And a lot of good ratings at 9pm despite the 2 big dramas, its not often you see that. Also that University Challenge/Only Connect block is really solid for BBC2.

Calm down folks - this will be an "aggregated consolidated" figure, augmented by including the second showing on ITV1+1 (and the timeshift of that showing too)

Still, an impressive number though - clearly sharply downhill from there though!

But a lot of the overnights aren't live and a lot of timeshifting (especially the sort BARB don't report) has unavoidable ads.

Great ratings for The One Show and Inside Out yesterday, pishing all over the supposed current affairs flagship Panorama.

Did anyone predict TOS to overnight just 910,000 viewers behind the supposedly all-conquering Broadchurch? And that BC would be ahead of the regional news investigations strand (which competes with Coro) by a whopping 1.4m viewers?

Not that I blow my own trumpet (much ) but I said for ages before the move that Only Connect should air after University Challenge.

It really has worked out well for them.

In fact, I thought it merited re-posting some actual numbers:

The One Show - aimiable fluff 4.66m
Broadchurch - greatest drama in history of TV 5.57m
Pointless - teatime quiz 4.37m
Inside Out - regional 'strand' 4.17m

All much of a muchness for the Monday night mid-rankers....

Amazing for Only Connect.

I think word of Victoria Coren's fantabulous assets must be getting round. Even the missus expresses astonishment every time I make her watch the show...
