8 5 USA - 08:00 PM NCIS 464 2.2%
I wonder if the upcoming move up the Freeview EPG to 21 will help 5USA continue on its upward curve. It's a hugely more prominent position - leapfrogging the likes of E4 and ITV4. |

Crikey, that's an impressive figure for 5USA at 8pm.

Ratings just in - Channel 4 had 2.6m viewers for Paxo’s grilling of Cameron and Miliband. Excellent numbers considering it wasn't advertised in billings, nor did it receive a lot of airtime in news bulletins.
These are big numbers, beating ITV documentary The Triplets Are Coming! (1.7m) and, with an 11.7% share of the audience, around double what C4 typically gets in primetime. They will be delighted. That’s not as big as the debates in 2010 but, then again, this wasn’t a debate. C4 didn’t have one five years ago, so we can’t do straight comparison. We’re still waiting for what it got on Sky News, which also broadcast it. |

And some more ratings on the Channel 4 programme.
"@C4Press: #BattleForNumber10 drew 2.6m/13% on @Channel4 and a further 322k/1.6% on Sky News. C4 coverage peaked with 3m/ 15.3%. Won slot for 16-34s" Banished - 2.1m |

Does anyone have numbers for BBC News Channel, who also screened it. I wonder if there was an agreement they weren't allowed to promote they were showing it because I never heard once they were actually screening it.

I really hope the BBC can put EastEnders in a slot away from Downton on Christmas Day, i'm sure the 'final episode' will have a bigger draw than usual and EE is in desperate need of a good christmas rating.

Good ratings by Channel 4 standards, but quite underwhelming considering the event. |

Good ratings by Channel 4 standards, but quite underwhelming considering the event. Of course in the last election, Sky News simulcast the BBC debate and BBC News simulcast the Sky debate (the ITV debate wasn't simulcast but everyone was allowed to repeat it immediately). You get loads of Sky News logos on BBC News so that's alright for them, and it is a news event. Seemed really strange to have them promote all the other ones at the end, mind. Especially when they referred to ITV1... Back off holiday by the way. Like that new poster who's turned up in my absence. |

Well, I dunno, at the end of the day it was on Channel Four and it is still politics on primetime telly. It amuses me when people were arguing against the debates saying that the broadcasters weren't interested in them because of democracy but because they get high ratings - as if ninety minutes of political debate is the kind of show that normally pulls in high ratings in any case. You certainly don't get audiences like this for things like Dispatches. Politics almost never rates well.

I am pretty sure the ITV and Sky debates in 2010 were commercial free? I guess C4 and Sky will be getting the rewards for having commercials this time with those ratings.

David Cameron and Ed Miliband's live political grilling was a ratings hit for Channel 4, according to preliminary figures for Thursday (March 26). Cameron and Miliband Live: The Battle for Number 10 was the second most watched programme in its timeslot, gathering 2.41m (11.9%) at 9pm (266k/1.9% on +1). Earlier, Richard III: The King Laid to Rest averaged 960k (4.6%) at 8pm (80k/0.4%). BBC One's MasterChef continued to top the ratings outside of soaps with 5.07m (24.1%) at 8pm, while The Truth About Calories fascinated 4.01m (18.8%) at 9pm. Question Time followed with 2.62m (26.7%) at 10.45pm. On BBC Two, Natural World continued with 1.24m (5.9%) at 8pm, before Banished entertained 2.13m (10.0%) at 9pm, and Inside No. 9 returned to 1.10m (6.1%) at 10pm. ITVs Tonight: The Pension Revolution informed 2.63m (13.3%) at 7.30pm (140k/0.7%), while Double Decker Driving School attracted 2.75m (13%) at 8.30pm (106k/0.5%). The concluding part of The Triplets Are Coming! was watched by 1.66m (7.7%) at 9pm (157k/1.0%). On Channel 5, The Killer Next Door: Countdown to Murder was seen by 880k (4.2%) at 8pm, followed by Holiday Love Rats Exposed with 761k (3.6%) at 9pm. The Mentalist continued with 540k (3.3%) at 10pm. E4's latest episode of The Big Bang Theory amused 921k (4.4%) at 8.30pm (296k/1.4%), while Brooklyn Nine-Nine tickled 357k (1.7%) at 9pm (188k/1.0%). On ITV2, Celebrity Juice entertained 798k (4.8%) at 10pm. Sky1's Arrow continued with 306k (1.5%) at 8pm, while Sky Atlantic's Fortitude brought in 336k (1.6%) at 9pm. |

Now that Downton is nding ITV need to be looking for their next hit to fill that slot. Tbh It wouldn't surprise me if they have nothing to replace it. What with DM (reportedly) being the final series and DA, drama that is returning needs to be a priority.
They'll be hoping Beowulf and Jekyll and Hyde are hits. I think though, they should seriously consider a drama along the lines of The Daring Buds and Heartbeat which is missing from TV schedules. The only drama that comes close to this is Last Tango and DM. But this type of cosy family drama, 8pm Sunday's is distinctly missing. Similar grand scope covering a long period full of drama and with a family of diverse characters at its heart. I even suggested they cast two of the original then unknown members of the cast from 1970 - 72 who are now well known TV actors as the patriarch and matriarch. (John Nettles and Barbara Flynn). |

By the way on This Morning today they pretty much intimated that a Hollywood movie 'episode' of Downton Abbey could follow the end of the series. There have been some discussions evidently. I guess with the shows popularity in the US that would not be too unexpected.

ITV got totally squeezed out last night, which is only to be expected. Should do way better next week. |

They need to do a Downton prequel based around Violet. Viewers have been given glimpses of her past in last series. Maggie could narrate.
That may or may not happen in the mooted movie (or if a hit probably in a series of movies). Not sure a prequel series will have quite the impact. Though it might work as - say - a 2016 Christmas special. I can see that happening when ITV realise they have a hole to fill in that period. Downton Abbey 1896 or something like that. |

The one thing I have heard most Downton fans say is that after following this family across a couple of decades they would love to see what happens to the abbey as more decades pass.

The final episode should go out with a huge fire that destroys the house. You could actually start the fire in the final episode of the main series, leaving a huge cliffhanger and then pick it up on Christmas Day. Instead we will probably end up with just having the sun setting on a 'where would you like the potatoes' incident.
