Excellent consolidated rating for Broadchurch, no two ways about it, reminds of the massive figures Downton got when people were popping back from the war every other week, and people confined to wheelchairs could suddenly walk again. Ratings are more of a measure of hype that quality. (Not just an ITV thing of course, Sherlock has got some big ratings for some rather iffy episodes as well.) The ratings are good so it should still be praised in this thread, but quality is another matter and Broadchurch has descended into a farce alarmingly quickly.
Of the big critical hits that have returned in the past year or so, Line of Duty is the only one that has survived a second series with its quality intact imo. With The Fall disappointing, and now Broadchurch as well, it makes you worry what's in store for Happy Valley and The Missing. I think The Missing will be alright as it will be telling a new story like Line of Duty did, albeit with a different cast, Happy Valley is the bigger worry though as, like Broadchurch, it just doesn't feel like it needs another series.
