That 16-34 for Stars In Their Eyes being lower than CBB I did not expect. And The Voice is one of the few shows on BBC1 that gets big ratings in the youth demo.

Fascinating. So TMO, with less than half the overall ratings of The Voice, secured 76.4% of the lucrative (because hard to get) 16-34 year old audience of The Voice, which itself is much more skewed towards younger viewers than most BBC1 fare.

That makes ITV's Saturday night performance look a whole lot better, and CBB look very good indeed for C5. As ever, the demographics tell the real story NOT the simplistic headline ratings which are all we normally get.

The thing this forgets is that younger people will watch TVUK on Iplayer or BBC3!!! My teenagers only watch TV on Iplayer and not on TV.

This weeks TVUK is at No1 in the favorites chart and its Monday and last weeks is still in the chart at 23. TVUK gets 600K on BBC3 as well, which will be mostly a younger audience.

Yep. Desperately disappointing end to one of ITV's big early-noughties dramas. The ITV weekly reach crisis kills another show.

Weekly reach crisis! Now that's something I haven't heard for a while

ITV management really need a shake up. I know Saturday daytimes are pretty low ratings affairs, but seriously - Jeremy Kyle from 9.25 am through until 1.35pm. If that were ITV2 then you could get away with it, but this is the flagship ITV channel. Sunday is the same again except it only runs until 12.35pm with 3 back to back editions.

Well done to E4 by the way for being the most watched digital channel in week 2. 2.1% share was enough to keep ITV2 and ITV3 at bay - with both channels well down on their best back on 2.0%.

This is just one week I know, but it does feel as someone who monitors the m/c ratings closely that the tide is slowly turning in E4's favour. Can they confirm this performance wasn't a fluke and start beating ITV2 and 3 consistently?

A fantastic night for BBC One. It's amazing how simple it seems to be for them to build up a decent schedule and nigh on impossible for ITV. Saying that, I thought Get Your Act Together deserved to do better than that - but, as said last night, I am the kiss of death for shows. Celebrity Big Brother is having a superb series so far.

Stars only added 330k to the overnight, and that includes the effect of breaks being stripped out.

No doubt that's all true, but it is overwhelmingly likely that the vast bulk of The Voice's viewers (including all those who watch it on Iplayer on Sky and Virgin) are included in the consolidated figures. While I share your frustration - and have expressed it on this forum before - that BARB are so incompetent that they cannot yet record tablet viewings, even when they do capture those figures that is likely to add at the very most a million or so extra viewers to a show like The Voice - not millions and millions more.

None of that therefore changes the fact that TMO skews much younger than The Voice, that the gap between the two shows is much closer in the 16-34 age bracket than in the audience as a whole, and that while The Voice undoubtedly continues to be a success for the BBC it is a little premature - once the demographics are looked at - to say that ITV's Saturday ratings are a disaster, the channel should be shut down, all the corporate leaders should be sacked or shot etc as some here are saying...

It's also worth noting that ITV1 has a budget which is a good third below that of BBC1.

BBC1 jolly well should be getting much higher ratings than ITV - they have a lot more money, and you go to prison if you don't pay for it...

Take Me Out showing why it stays around with that 16-34 performance. SITE didn't do great even in that demo though. The Voice skews older than X Factor and BGT (although still young compared to other shows). I'm surprised it didn't really skew any younger than SITE though.


Do young people not watch other shows online or on BBC3/ITV2 then?

So The Voice was the most watched show of the week despite someone telling me yesterday that it would be CTM. That's a big fall for CTM and hardly much has been said. If an ITV show loses 1.3m viewers there's pages and pages to go through - but it's almost gone unnoticed.

GYAT did very poorly. I saw most of it and it wasn't too bad. ITV weekends are the absolute pits at the moment though. Dancing on Ice should still be on air. They should have looked after it better.

Pity Sam's not about anymore, he'd have so much material to go on at the moment.

Until tablets are included demos are not a true reflection, younger people will use tablets more than older people, My daughter at University for LF rules will only view on catch up not live.

Yes BBC1 has a higher budget, if ITV was not so profit focused rather than quality focused it could invest in shows and then get a bigger return on ad sales, its short sighted at the moment control costs, recycle cheap shows, peddle soaps up to 90 mins each night, rely on two three big shows to make the profit. Now you can go to prison for speeding, you can go to prison for bunking transport fares, there has to be continued abuse of the LF to get a custodial sentence.

Hardly well done when the entire top 10 is Hollyoaks and Big Bang Theory. You are talking as if this sea change is a result of months of developing a new schedule, not just showing the same programme all night.

People say ITV rely on Cowell, and criticise ITV2 for showing the same films all the time, but if E4 lost Big Bang Theory they'd be screwed.

Do you promise on not making a fuss and creating crisis threads if ITV were not as profit focused? When it gets reported on the news, that ITV have posted a profit warning and Steph starts talking about it on Breakfast? When the shareholders start complaining at the lack of dividend and demanding sections be sold off?

I think not. It'd just be two ways to criticise ITV, like what used to be the case not very long ago.

That's not an unfair point, but it should also be noted that the main reason E4 seems to have crept ahead is that ITV have borderline ruined ITV2 (from a ratings perspective) by launching ITVBe which has spread their resources too thinly across the two channels. ITV2 has lost TOWIE amongst other shows (including a lot of daytime filler that did well) and gained nothing to replace it. Meanwhile ITVBe isn't really making much of an impact (TOWIE seems to have weathered the move OK but it doesn't seem to have boosted anything else on the channel). It's all a bit of a mess.

You don't need to be that innovative to succeed in the world of multichannel. But E4 is always evolving around those big important shows, it never stays the same or rests on its laurels.

It's going to be fascinating to see where the BBC Three audience goes, will there be a clear beneficiary of that? Or will it be split so evenly that it's too hard to identify, with perhaps some of the audience switching off altogether?

I'm surprised Take Me Out doesn't have more 16-34s, though. It strikes me as something anyone over 30 wouldn't be interested in.

Crozier isn't a commissioner, but as CEO he should be asking questions of Peter Fincham and in particular the entertainment commissioning team. For 2 new shows to be beaten by Celebrity Big Brother at the weekend and smashed in the 16-34 demo is very very poor.

Arguably they could have pulled another year out of DOI but it would be down another 1m this year. They'd revamped it several times and it just wasn't working. The end was coming.

They may also need to look at marketing and overall branding. They had the big rebrand in 2013 which seemed to work well. But there now seems to be a chronic problem across the schedule where the channel is failing to pull in viewers to even give new shows (or old shows) a chance.


TMO still doing well in 16-34's, it'll get another series on those numbers.

Thought TVUK would skew younger this year but seems to be going older. Although that may be a sign of it pulling in a casual TV viewing audience amid woeful ITV opposition. Still strong numbers.

The skew really doesn't help SITE at all. The schedule should be changed to ensure Take Me Out starts when The Voice finishes, regardless of what it doses to SITE - it can't get much worse anyway.
