Think back to the Hayday of ITV it was a licence to print money and couldn't do any wrong, Kenny Everett said you could put a nuclear war against Corrie and no one would watch it, This is your life getting silly ratings at 7 on a Wednesday, Give us a clue,Name that tune, George and Mildred, Rising Damp, Top dramas, The Sweeney,-Heartbeat in a slot Call the midwife now owns. LWT LE shows Blind Date, Game for a laugh.

ITV is now "profit" business focused, everything is for profit, yes like most companies, its not a charity, but and its a big but, its on a circle downwards that doesn't end, "ever decreasing circles".

Having a smaller budget on fewer shows, and then spreading them out, being selective when and where they show programmes and having massive gaps, means the ITV default audience has gone.

The powerful days when the BBC didn't get a look in however it tried, with a powerful line up ITV owned nights, the Sunday night slots, such as Darling buds of may, Londons Burning.

In summary yes all businesses must be profit focused but its gone too far there is the old saying speculate to accumulate, it needs a strong complementary consistent line up each night, that hands the viewers onto the next show.

Dont just look for profit on XF, BGT and IACGMOOH, and the soaps, that is short term thinking, XF is dying now, BGT is very very strong, but putting all your eggs in one basket can bring companies down.

31% in that demo is about as young skewing as it gets for BBC1/ITV (the only time I can remember either going younger than that is the series of TMO that played against Strictly). I can't see it completely alienating a middle aged audience, but I suspect its 50+ audience is very very poor. That shouldn't be an issue though as they have so many shows that do well in that demo anyway.


DOI was doing 5.5m for the main show and 4.5m for the results last year. This year you could make that 4.5m and 3.5m had it continued. Better than SITE/GYAT for sure, but not great for such a show more generally and there would have been further calls for the axe. It's a pity they can't get more weeks out of Takeaway really, although I guess they'd run the risk of it becoming tired. I'm not entirely convinced SITE/GYAT will keep their slots for that long (although I guess there's more chance of SITE moving). I guess their best solution right now is probably:

7.00 Celebrity Chase
8.00 Planet's Got Talent
8.30 Take Me Out
9.45 Jonathan Ross

6.00 Get Your Act Together
7.15 Catchphrase

Agree there's a wider issue going on with both new and returning shows. Their best bet would probably be to do something big this Autumn around the Rugby World Cup.


The Voice is getting a similar skew to last year. I think it definitely is mopping up a casual audience but that's probably across all audiences. SITE really is toast. Agree about getting TMO on air at 8.30pm - it would help a lot.

I have to say it says it's all about ITV's scheduling - in their infinite wisdom they start a show which relies heavily on 16-34s against one of BBC One's biggest 16-34 pullers. Can anyone else see the flaw in this? If I recall correctly in 2013 it aired opposite Strictly; more logical on paper but the overall mass of the latter swallowed it up. Air it from 5.45 - 7.00 (not an awful slot in the winter) and it's probably pull in a young skewing audience. I wonder if Get Your Act Together would perform better against The Voice as it has a 'Talent'/Saturday night feel about it? I presume their '75 minute' shows must be something to do with ad rates as it results in shows starting at awkward times and away from BBC One scheduling junctions.


The question is with what? Jekyl and Hyde is a possibility but outside of that what do they have coming up?

I see the public can have there say on BBC3 tomorrow, But the BBC Trust may have all ready decided to say yes to the change ages ago but haven't made it public.

Another (yet another) problem ITV has is that it's running its commissioning car pretty much on empty. It commissions just enough to fill the schedule (well, parts of the schedule where it still bothers) but doesn't have anything left in the tank. THAT's why it's not been pulling underperforming shows. Unlike, in the old days, it doesn't have much on the shelf to replace it with.

Same situation in the States. Shows are now playing out in full, rather than being yanked after 1-3 eps.

And it IS Crozier's job to set the programming budget for ITV Network. It's quite clear that that needs a boost. It's fallen well behind the BBC's and that's become very clear. Most nights now - no contest.

Your right ITV should have had there hit shows ready to playout bang on the start of January at the moment they are struggling to be honest I think they should have cashed in on Wednesdays which as the moment are quite weak and had Foyle's War on then.

They could have had
Mr Selfridge on Sundays
Broadchurch on Mondays
Foyle's War on Wednesdays
Benidorm on Fridays

Not true, do you have anything to back that up? I think it will go the way of six music, it will not go and be saved, but it will be a different channel and a lot less money and commissions. I actually think the trust will show its bite and stop it.

Foyle's War has always gone out on Wednesdays though, would have been a bit unfair on something which has (up until 2015) always been a relative ratings banker to be thrown about just to fill gaps.

The 'decision process' has gone on so long, they may as well just wait until the opening of the next government and charter renewal now

I agree with this, you never know where the next hit is going to come from, that's why you should invest across the board in most slots- IAC, BGT and (especially) XF are not going to last forever- I meant look at the Original SITE/Blind Date/Gladiators etc.. that swept the board for 15 or more years with comfortable ease but eventually declined, but ITV were finding new hits then to replace them. When was the last time they tried using XF as a launch pad? And with the exception of Broadchurch, when was the last time ITV found a returnable drama that pulled a 6-7m audience or better, Downton? That's coming to the end of its feasible life too- It's too little, too spread out and while it might be good for the bank balance, the viewers are leaving the channel and brand loyalty is a big thing- They might come back for the tentpole's, but they leave immediately, and if one or two get knocked they could be in big trouble

I'm aware that the licence fee means The BBC can invest, but in the last 10 years to have dusted off its 'fuddy duddy' image of One and has a raft of hits- There's major drama for much of the year and its found success (LTIH, Happy Valley, The Missing, Death in Paradise, Doctor Who amongst many more) and has lots to come too. Thats not mentioning big documentaries, investment in daytime (including original drama and entertainment formats) and the tentpole entertainment series' The Voice and SCD to complement the more middling lottery quizzes/other stuff. The talk of a default audience is true, but that's because itv have gifted it to them, people watch it more, see the trailers, plan their viewing and it doesn't factor what the competition is because they want to watch the new drama because 'it looks good' The fact that ITV can be struggling to get 2m people watching the channel at 9pm not just occasionally but its getting to be a more regular occurrence- We've had people saying they might bring people back with Rugby World Cup, well if they do they need to capitilise on it and rebuild some of the good will because at the moment they might tune in for the match, but they'll be straight over to BBC One the second it finishes if they don't

Aye. Ideally they'll come up with something big other than X Factor or celebrity gameshows to schedule around it, use the opportunity of the upper class paying attention to them for that month to try and reduce the extent to which most people see them as a channel which shows tat and not a lot else. Is it too late notice for them to have another series of Broadchurch ready by then

Jekyl and Hyde might be ready for the autumn but one show won't be enough.

They've got a few things lined up for the Autumn: Jekyll & Hyde, Rugby World Cup, The Forgotten (new 6 part drama), Doc Martin, Grantchester, Downton Abbey, The X Factor and probably more dramas not confirmed yet. Quite a bit to build a campaign around.

BBC1 has tried for a long time to get some good schedules together. It wasn't until 2012 that they could beat ITV on Winter Sundays. Winter Saturdays were down to a simple change of moving The Voice away from Summer and Britain's Got Talent. A perceived flop turned into a potent audience grabber again during Blind Auditions.

Everybody already has an opinion on Downton Abbey, X Factor is precisely what they don't need to be majoring on when other people are paying attention to the channel and willing to be open-minded, and Doc Martin started to fall a bit during the last season didn't it? That leaves The Forgotten, J&H and Grantchester as brands that people can find they're interested in 'by accident' whilst watching ITV more than normal, hopefully they'll do well to capitalise on the temporary new audience.

I agree in regards to Downton Abbey and The X Factor. Grantchester has already had a run out and, while it didn't disgrace itself, it hardly lit up the ratings board. The Forgotten and Jekyl & Hyde are two possible strong shows.
