Looks like an odd situation last night in the 7pm hour whereby BBC1, BBC2 and ITV1 all roughly had the same number of viewers.
Thought the tennis might have done a little better to be honest, but it's only the first round. Plenty of time for Murray Mania to build yet. Elsewhere, low ratings at 9pm. You can tell we're in summer now and the weather is good. CSI finale did well but I expected more. I do wonder if CSI: Miami might rate a bit better when it returns with new episodes in the same slot next week. |

Interesting Tennis ratings, particularly how the coverage dropped dramatically when it switched channels at 6pm. About a million and a half viewers who were watching on BBC One failed to find the remote to follow it onto BBC Two. I know a fair number may have just tuned in early for the news, but its still interesting to add to the debate about changing of channels.
The other standout ratings from yesterday were how badly the soaps did. Clearly hit badly by the Tennis. How many times has Holby City outrated the EastEnders episode before it?!

Official BARB ratings for week ending 14/6/09
Top 10 Programmes
1 - 9.30m - Coronation Street (Mon 19:33, ITV1) 2 - 8.70m - EastEnders (Mon, BBC1) 3 - 7.98m - Football World Cup Qualifier: England v Andorra (Wed, ITV1) 4 - 7.18m - Ashes to Ashes (Mon, BBC1) 5 - 6.43m - Emmerdale (Wed, ITV1) 6 - 5.83m - Have I Got News For You (Fri, BBC1) 7 - 5.79m - Holby City (Tue, BBC1) 8 - 5.74m - Ten O'Clock News (Mon, BBC1) 9 - 5.28m - Casualty (Sat, BBC1) 10- 5.19m - Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (Fri, BBC1) Corrie tops the chart, in a week dominated by BBC1 programmes. Holby City above Casualty, which is a bit unusual for a regular week. Ten O'Clock News makes it into the top 10 for the second week in a row. The football on ITV1 was the most watched sports broadcast this year, slotting into 17th place for this year's overall chart. Alternative (BBC2, C4, Five) 1 - 3.66m - Embarrasing Bodies (Wed, C4) 2 - 3.34m - Springwatch (Mon, BBC2) 3 - 3.26m - CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (Tue, Five) 4 - 3.25m - Mary Queen of Shops (Tue, BBC2) 5 - 3.16m - The Mentalist (Thu, Five) 6 - 2.90m - Big Brother (Fri 21:00, C4) 7 - 2.64m - 8 Out of 10 Cats (Fri, C4) 8 - 2.52m - CSI: New York (Sat, Five) 9 - 2.44m - Have I Got A Little Bit More News For You (Sat, BBC2) 10- 2.15m - Alan Carr: Chatty Man (Sun, C4) Embarrasing Bodies tops the week in this chart, in another evenly spread week for the 3 channels. Alan Carr's new show sneaks into the top 10 with 2.15m. Big Brother only in 6th place; a couple of years ago it was topping this chart. Multichannel Chart 1 - 1.28m - Live ICC World T20: India v England (Sun, Sky Sports 1) 2 - 1.24m - Katie and Peter Stateside (Thu, ITV2) 3 - 1.21m - EastEnders (Tue, BBC3) 4 - 1.08m - Come Dine With Me (Sun, More 4) 5 - 1.05m - America's Got Talent (Fri, ITV2) 6 - 0.83m - House: Season Five (Sun, Sky 1) 7 - 0.79m - Family Guy (Sun, BBC3) 8 - 0.78m - Ross Kemp in Search for Pirates (Mon, Sky 1) 9 - 0.67m - Supernatural (Sun, ITV2) 10- 0.65m - The Inbetweeners (Thu, E4) The exciting England v India T20 cricket match tops this week's multichannel chart. It might by Sky Sports' highest ever non-football rating - not 100% sure. Generally a low rating top 10 for the multichannels, with even a repeat of The Inbetweeners getting in there. |

6 - 0.83m - House: Season Five (Sun, Sky 1) We could start having Have I Got News For You: Series 37 or Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow: Series 6, considering it's first 5 series were called Live at the Apollo.

First time Corrie has topped the chart since the week before the DOI final IIRC! The top has been dominated by DOI, EE, BGT & The Apprentice in recent months.
Also it seems like a pretty impresive timeshift for The Mentalist & I think it can now definetely be considered a huge success for FIVE as including repeat showings it's pulling up to 4m viewers. Regarding last night I think that could be a first that Holby beats all the soaps surely?! Very low for EE and Emmerdale obviously hit by Wimbledon. Also ITV's flop Tuesday continues. I expected a little bit for more for CSI considering it was the finale and had weak competition but 2.8m is good nevertheless. |

A very interesting article here! I'm wondering whether Thunderbirds is enough of a cult show to command an audience, or to challenge Doctor Who. I wonder if Michael Grade hadn't had washed his money on football, could ITV's Saturday evening slate in family drama have increased with this. We'll never know now. It doesn't help that we had all this with his (IMO truly excellent) CGI reboot of Captain Scarlet back in 2005, when he did get the rights to remake one of his 60s shows. A vastly expensive series (estimated to have cost over £1 million per 25 minute episode) which he made with independent funding - then sold to ITV, who buried it in a dreadful Saturday morning children's show called Ministry of Mayhem, where it had no regular timeslot, had each ep cut in two, lost the start and end titles/music, and had graphics and phone numbers shown all over it. The result, not suprisingly, was a much poorer ratings performance than it would have got if it had been shown on Saturday nights at 6 or 7 pm. The result was that, I suspect, Gerry Anderson's backers lost money on making the show and he might therefore find it more difficult than the linked article indicates to raise money for a new series. Plus of course the Thunderbirds movie in 2004 (made without any Gerry Anderson involvement at all) tanked badly at the box office. The sad thing is that Gerry Anderson is quite right - something like Thunderbirds would have exactly the same cross-generational appeal that Doctor Who has. But ITV are, they tell us, not interested in any drama before 9 pm and any new children's programming at any hour, so even if (which seems unlikely) GA could get ITV to sell him the rights, I can't see them having the imagination or budget to schedule a new Thunderbirds series where it belongs (and ironically where the original was back in the 60s) ie a 7 pm slot. |

It would have to be heavily but well edited, as well. Quote:

US News: America's Got Talent premiered for its 4th series with 11.3 million viewers and a 3.3 demo rating. Both should be enough for the weekly top spots. ABC's revival of Superstars didn't go too well and ahead of its season finale tomorrow night, I'm A Celebrity hit a series low rating. Tvbythenumbers - Full Report Quote:
The season 4 premiere of America’s Got Talent was more than enough to push NBC to the top of the heap with an average 18-49 demo 2.6 rating. The premiere of ABC’s The Superstars was anything but super, averaging only a 1.6 rating in the demo.
Anchoring the win for NBC, the America’s Got Talent premiere demo rating was still down 14% from its season 3 premiere last June. In today’s broadcast world though, down 14% is the new up! Limping towards its finish tonight, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! fell to its lowest rating of the summer. Going all new last night, ABC was still mired in 4th place. Besides the slow start for Superstars, a new episode of Better Off Ted was completely unwatched (Who will be the first to comment “But it was hardly promoted, I didn’t even know it was on!!!!”?), and Primetime: Family Secrets also delivered its lowest original rating ever. CW’s Hitched or Ditched was flat in the 18-34 demo from last week. Fox’s Mental was down almost 20% in the 18-49 demo from last week. |

It's not really news though that Gerry Anderson has been trying, and failing, to get the rights back to Thunderbirds and failing to make progress - he has been trying for at least 20 years, and none of the rights holders over those years - Polygram, Carlton, Granada, now ITV - have ever given him the time of day.
It doesn't help that we had all this with his (IMO truly excellent) CGI reboot of Captain Scarlet back in 2005, when he did get the rights to remake one of his 60s shows. It would've been so nice if Saturday and Sunday had a slate of well performing drama series:- Saturday - Primeval (12 weeks) from January-March getting 5-6 million viewers - Tomorrow People (6 weeks) in late Summer, early Autumn, probably getting around 4 million viewers with room to grow. - Thunderbirds (6 weeks) in mid to late Autumn could achieve heights of 6-7 million viewers, given its mass appeal. Sunday - The Royal (12 weeks) a real Winter slot with a real soap lead-in, against the popular Lark Rise to Candleford, it would probably average between 5-6 million viewers, being neck on neck with BBC1's period drama. - Wild at Heart (10 weeks) in the summer, again after the soaps, probably set for around 6 million viewers, given it'll be in the summer, and it won't have that Dancing on Ice winter sandwich, but 6 million is very decent for the summer. - Heartbeat (12 weeks) from late Autumn going throughout Christmas and into the New Year, giving the show the best possible on-going slot. I don't think it would be against Top Gear but I might be wrong. If it is, it'll probably be getting around 5 million viewers but a low share, given the lead in from the soaps. If no Top Gear, and it's against Strictly Come Dancing, I think it could pull in 6 million viewers, and a highish share. And perhaps Kingdom could add to that Sunday slate eventually. And that could be, apart from The Bill, ITV's pre-9pm slate of programming, IF ITV hadn't paid for all the football, which came out at an astronomical price |

Yes, but it will lose some of its padding, and the results show on the Thursday would be extended. Thus, a pairing of Tuesday & Thursday with entertainment shows.
And I don't think 2 days between DOI performances and results would do the show any good. Quote:
They have 28 episodes, over multiple days, sometimes split, so ITV could fit those 28 episodes from mid-July till October, with other episodes on Thursday. I think people would prefer to watch it "live" or as close to "live" as they can rather than waiting almost 2 months. Also, I think they would have major issues with talent show overkill. Compared to BGT, AGT is very very poor. It would have to be heavily but well edited, as well. Quote:
Well, on December 9, it will be the 50th anniversiary of Coronation Street, this would be a 6 week documentary series with interviews with the stars about its 50 year history.
I could see them doing that, though I think 6 weeks at 60 minutes a time may be a bit much. Perhaps a shorter series at 30 minutes a time shown after Corrie might be better.

They're only not interested because they blew all the money on football, and know that the advertising market is more competetive post-watershed, so the 8pm slots may as well be filled with factual programming.

All moving Dancing on Ice to Tuesday does is move the ratings from Sunday. Might fix Tuesday's woes, but it'll cause a headache on Sundays instead.
ITV simply haven't got the strength in depth to fill the 8pm slots once The Bill is gone - really long before it's planned switch to 9pm they should have been testing the water with a few midweek pilot series, but there's been nothing so far. I think on Tuesdays they'll admit defeat and air the usual lifestyle crap, but on Thursdays how about moving The Krypton Factor to 8pm, when it returns, and partnering it with something at 8.30pm. |

Clearly hit badly by the Tennis. How many times has Holby City outrated the EastEnders episode before it?!
We could start having Have I Got News For You: Series 37 or Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow: Series 6, considering it's first 5 series were called Live at the Apollo.
