Thanks a lot, rzt.

Golf ratings much lower on Sunday than Saturday, even though Sunday was the final round. I imagine that is due to the Premier League on Sky on Sunday.

I don't think the above is correct.

It's not correct to weight each 6 hour segment equally. Far more people are watching in total from 1800 to 2400 so that segment needs a much higher weighting.

Ugh - must have made a mistake in the above.

Incredible for BGT. How anyone can even hint that 11.8m is underwhelming (more than any episode of seasons 1 and 2 except the s2 final result) puzzles me. That peak is huge too. I thought it was a great show last night too, and I think it has a shot of growing tonight (it must, DJ Talent is on! ).

2.4m for Beat The Star! It was clearly hit by the weather/early start, but I doubt it'll be coming back next year.

rzt's figures look much more realistic.

It's important to understand WHAT an all day share is - it is NOT a straight average of the shares throughout the day.

Consider this example. 2 bags of balls:

Bag A (10 balls)
10% are red

Bag B (100 balls)
50% are red

Overall, the number of red balls is not 30%. It's actually 51/110 = 46%.

With all day shares, the night, morning and afternoon are equivalent to Bag A. The evening is equivalent to Bag B.

What did Britain's Got more talent get last night?

It did fall apart for channel 4 after NATM, as Come Dine With me, and Secret Millionaire were extremely low! And that is a very poor rating for Beat the star!

Some of us can remember not so long ago when 11.8m would be a bad week for Casualty.

Of course, we all know that in this multichannel age, 11.8m is a staggering figure.

Ten winning a Sunday - I've seen it all now. Traditionally Sunday is Nine's day to shine, but not last night. Both MasterChef and Merlin pulled in their best audiences to date respectively.

To show you how far Ten have come, here are the ratings for this time last year, Sunday 25th May 2008:

Dedicated to PJMillar. A huge fan of the daily report.”

Yes 17 million in its heyday.

11.8 million is huge today, although the amount of hype is equally as huge.

Incorrect. The example is correct, but it is a straight average throughout the day for all-day shares - having recalculated it appears I was originally wrong.

Fantastic for Britain's Got Talent. It really is at its peak and on a high at the moment and it peaked when Susan Boyle performed, which doesn't surprise me considering all the hype surrounding her.

I can see tonight's semi final surpassing the 12 million mark.

Sorry, but I am certain that is not correct. An overall average is not an average of averages.

The way to do the calculation is to add all the numbers in each column of post 16259 to get totals and then calculate percentages.

By doing it this way, correct weightings are given to each time period.

Doing it the other way is completely meaningless. It's like saying the average number of red balls in a bag is 30%, ie:

Bag A - 1 red, 9 black (red = 10%)

Bag B - 50 red, 50 black (red = 50%).

Total - 51 red, 59 black (red = 46%).

The average of 10% and 50% (ie 30%) is a totally meaningless figure.

The weather's been a bit wet today (for me anyway), so BGT might get even better ratings than last night?

I can see the final reaching well over 13/14 million if the weather is atrocious.

Technically, if the live shows see a similar boost to the audition shows, the final could be getting 16m+. I doubt it will happen, but never rule it out...

The auditions this year have averaged 11m (48%). This is 27% up from last year's auditions average of 8.7m (39%).

Suppose there is a 27% boost for the final (which I highly doubt), that would predict 16.8m. If there is a 15% boost (which is much more likely), then that would equate to 15.2m. You can pretty much break the final predictions down as:

Boost.... Projected rating
5%+..... 13.9m
10%+... 14.5m
15%+... 15.2m
20%+... 15.8m
25%+... 16.5m
30%+... 17.2m

You'd have to say, 14m+ should be reachable which is an astonishing in itself. But it could well rise up to 16m possibly according to the trends.

Before you say I'm talking a load of bollocks, the above thing did work for when predicting for the X Factor 2008 final.

I wonder if the final will surpass the ratings for Xmas's Wallace and Gromit? Does anyone think The X factor 2009 will do better than BGT? BTw what did Dancing on ice this year average?

I think BGT might surpass W&G's overnight rating of 14.3m.

But I'm not sure about officials, because W&G saw a huge boost to 16.2m.

I personally think The X Factor reached its peak last year and can see a 9 - 10 million average for the 2009 series. It all depends though on how well the show is promoted, how much hype there is and how good the competition is this year. I don't see how they could top last year's series though.

ITV1 are really going to eat up this week. There is rarely an ad break when I don't see 'A Week of Finals'.

Monday - BGT,
Tuesday - BGT,
Wednesday - Champions League Final,
Thursday - BGT,
Friday - BGT,
Saturday Daytime - FA Cup Final,
Saturday Evening - BGT Final.

I can see every one of those being a juggernaught and nobody else coming close.

Thanks for posting all the weekend figures, rzt.

Weakest Link seems to kill BBC One's Saturday night at the outset. It's sad they're having to put this on Saturday nights at the moment. I guess it's a money-saving thing. Surely, they didn't expect it to be a good move for Saturday's ratings.

Some diabolical daytime ratings for ITV1 at the weekend, and apart from next Saturday's FA Cup Final, I can't envisage any weekend daytime joy for them in the next few months. It underlines the importance of making the Saturday and Sunday night schedules as strong as they can afford (cost-wise) when BGT ends, because they don't want the channel falling off the radar altogether at weekends.

I thought Final Score might have rated a bit better yesterday, although I suppose everything was pretty much decided at the top of the table, so that only left the Europa League and relegation issues to be decided.

Happily, Weakest Link is dropped from next Saturday's BBC1 schedule in favour of family films.

2.30 HOCUS POCUS
4.00 FIRST DAUGHTER
5.40 NEWS (This one's not a film)
6.05 TOY STORY

I think BBC1 should go for films every Saturday at 5.30 during the summer and save all their homegrown programmes, such as Robin Hood, for after 7pm. Keep the ratings up for the new shows.

Yes but the Beeb have a guaranteed income of several billion. A regular edition of WL does rather lack imagination. I do get the impression that tea time (5.00 to 6.30) Saturday is (apart from the big reality formats) lost to the nation who no longer expect to be infront of the tv in big numbers at this time. Robin Hoods dire figures suggest this too.
And yet Jimll Fix It, Generation Game etc have got up to 20 million in that timeslot once upon a time.
