Of course these figures would be at the height of winter (in the days when we had winters) rather than in the summer.

In my day, summer Saturdays on BBC1 were Carry On films at 6.30 followed by Seaside Special at 8.00.

I agree they could surely find something a bit better than Weakest Link repeats for early Saturday evenings.

As for summer Saturdays in years gone by, who can forget The Val Doonican Show?

Not sure about BGT tonight ratings wise. The weather was poorer tonight, but it had Ashes to Ashes against it which I think will dent it. I'm going to say about 11m, with a 13m peak. The peak will be high because it finishes at 22:30 - over on BBC1 at that time is the News and Omad Dijali (sp?).

Tonight's also definitely the worst semi - and I think it will remain the worst compared to the rest of the week - I think they've deliberately done that because they are against Ashes to Ashes - the only show against BGT this week which will probably get 4.5/5m+.

BGT was dull and predictable tonight. I want my 90 minutes back.

Serves you right. You should have watch Ashes To Ashes instead. V good.

Probably about 11m tonight for BGT? I actually thought it was better than last night, though it still seems to be poorer than last year. Doesn't help that even the people that were good at the auditions have been poorer on the live shows.

I watched 90210

I've kinda given up on that (I was only really hanging on because of Naomi, Silver and Annie!). I'll just be sticking to the one guilty pleasure, "Gossip Girl".

To make this ratings relevant, Gossip Girl is doing crap for ITV2, though. 90210 is OK-ish for E4, about 300,000 which is decent. Though it did start with something close to 600,000, IIRC.

I've completely forgotten about this series. I'll have to catch up on iPlayer.

I must admit I regret giving up on this one so easily but I couldn't really get into the first series. Had high hopes after Life on Mars and was quite disappointed with what I saw in Ashes to Ashes. Ratings wise I suspect it probably held up well considering. Say about 4.8m?

Sounds about right. I'm not expecting it to have completely died against BGT. I suppose some of its audience will be aware that they can catch up anyway (this will probably be its best week on iPlayer) but nevertheless, not everyone loves BGT so a quality alternative is bound to do relatively well.

As for the show itself, I thought the first series was very good. It took a while to get on its feet and it's certainly no LoM but it's a great drama in its own right. But I've only seen the first episode of this series and time's running out for me to catch up on the series before it finishes.

Actually I used to like Seaside Special as a kid. It ran from 1975 or 1976 and was a different seaside town every week. I can even remember the two theme tunes -one of which made the charts sung by Mike Batt I think.
Ofcourse this was in the days when people actually went to British seaside resorts in their droves.

The Ch 4 programme on Churchill's decision to sink the French navy in 1940 would have been a better use of your time! (In my opinion of course!).

The weather was great until around 10pm when it finally got dark here. Much better weather than Saturday for example

Thought tonights's BGT was fairly weak.

It's so loaded for favourites VS Cannon Fodder

BGT does seem pretty dull.

There is just something not right about it and I cant quite pinpoint it.

Merlin premieres Sunday June 21st on NBC.

Shame they lost their nerve and didn't show it midseason, but probably just as well given what happened to Crusoe.

I watch them both (thought i did record 90210 and Ashes to Ashes tonight and watched BGT)

TBH 90210 is better then Gossip Girl at the moment, thought season 1 of Gossip Girl was really good, and season 2 is getting better!!

The new melrose place looks better then the 2! thought u cant beat One Tree Hill

As for the ratings, I can see why ITV2 have moved GG to 8pm (or is that just for this week?) I cant see ITV2 wanting melrose or the other new CW show with Mischa Barton... maybe E4 will want them

True, with one exception. This time last year, even in the Robin Hood slot (ie starting circa 6.15 or 6.20), Doctor Who was getting 7/8 million. Its fans at the time raged that it could do even better if it started at 7 pm or later, and when later in the season it had later starts it did indeed pull in even higher ratings.

But still, getting 7 million plus on a spring Saturday night, starting well before 7 pm, was/is a staggering achievement for a drama.

Beeb bosses must be crossing their fingers that the Steven Moffat/Matt Smith series this time next year does as well as the Russell T Davies/David Tennant series did this time last year.

Quite simply... the talent (or lack thereof). Not enough variety in it this year either and each semi final seems to have one too many joke acts. One or two non dancing acts is all is takes, but there haven't been any. A&D are still doing well, though and the Cowell/Holden banter was funny tonight (not sure she thought the same, though!).

For that reason, I'm not quite so convinced about 15m finale ratings.

I agree, Ant and Dec seem fine and the Judges are funny - best moment of the night was Simon having to explain to Amanda that the man was not supposed to burn to death.

Which makes is even more baffling that the show has fallen flat.

I think it probably is a bad mix of contestants. They only really need to have a mix of singers/dancers/others, with maybe 1, maximum 2 joke acts. It just seemed too full of rubbish.

I also thought Escala, who I liked last year, droned on for about 3 minutes too long - with a pointless effort where most the music was already on the backing track.

Maybe its also that the show peaked too soon. I assumed things would just get bigger and bigger and it seems to have drifted off a little.

Ratings-wise though the show is safe and the final will be huge of course.

I think the show peaked with SuBo last night (even though her performance underwhelmed). Now you just feel like 'what's the point?'

The lack of talent is definitely an issue, but I honestly think this Susan Boyle thing is both the best and worst thing that could have ever happened.

Yep and I don't think it helps that she wasn't all that great on Sunday. The show (and Cowell) must be loving it on one hand, but tonight they seemed desperate to show other people had a chance.

(And if Cowell could have planned this kind of hype, I don't think that he would ever in a million years have used Susan Boyle!)

We'll see what the ratings are like tonight. I'm sticking to about 11m (10.7m-11.2m).

Think it may go up slightly as it's a Bank Holiday, to around 12m. But the (lack of) quality tonight may see it dip below 11m tomorrow night. Then the break may affect it even more.
