I don't think it's true that Shirley is overused. I'm not just saying that because I really like the character. She hasn't appeared much recently. She's not in the episodes next Thursday and Friday.

Actually if Shirley is "overused" then so is Sharon. She has been very prominent and the writers have tweeted that October is a big month for her and she will probably take centre stage on Xmas Day.

I'm hoping Shirley doesn't go away for 6-8 weeks because she's been absent a lot recently. Is Karl Howman on a break? Been ages since we saw Buster.
My sentiments exactly.

I'm hoping she doesn't either, I'm hoping that Shirley's absences recently is LH's A/L and there won't be another 6-8 weeks on top.

I wondered that too, I've missed Buster too. Karl Howman must be on a break. Unless it is where the Carters aren't the focus at the moment so he just isn't onscreen? He isn't in the next few weeks either though.

I was hoping we would get an interview with Karl How man, we've had one with almost every new character bar him.

I never understand the misbalance between the characters. Characters like Masood, Denise, Ronnie in particular are so low and are below characters that have left this year. It seems the only characters to feature regularly these days are the Carters (and Carol who's leaving).

Whilst the Carter domination is nowhere near last years pathetic total its still annoying to see considering they are the most boring family on the square.
I agree, The Carters had one of the main s/l that run for months even if was running on air, it still put them to the front, they dominated pretty much most of 2014 up til May 2015, why it's not overly surprising why, I agree that compared to other families they have been a repetitive bore most of the time,

Masood and Denise deserve to be in many episodes and it has been a quiet year for them especially Denise

Ronnie isn't that low but she's not in the top 10 because Samantha Womack took time out to do panto and Mount Pleasant. She's back full-time so I think we will see more of her

Hopefully Shirley will drop down as I'm fed up of her prominence this year and sadly it looks like she won't be going on her annual break

I would like Ian, Jane, Sharon, Stacey or Phil to win the appearance count
Denise so deserves a s/l of her own she such a underrated character and actress.

I don't think it's true that Shirley is overused. I'm not just saying that because I really like the character. She hasn't appeared much recently. She's not in the episodes next Thursday and Friday.

This is always going to be a argument that people are going to agree or disagree with, she appeared beside Carol in the most episodes this year that is fact, some will feel she featured too much, other feel she hasn't, I don't think anyone can really say she hasn't had a prominent role in episodes and stories this year, she hasn't been underused put it this way.

Sharon has solid appearances in block stories/weeks, she too has had her share of screen time, but then her, Ian and Phil are not surprising as they are long standing characters and are expected to be involved in high profile plots and stories directly connecting them all together.

I'm so glad Carol is on top!
It's awful that Vincent is only 7 episodes behind Denise.

Thanks for the update
Thanks for the update. How I wish Shirley wasn't at the top. Some of the bottom feeders really deserve their chance to shine, can't see that happening though.
Very welcome both.

Haven't noticed Billy's absence to be honest which shows how redundant he is. He can come back for the 40th anniversary to finally explain the missing post.

Its more balanced then last year but still same old characters at the top except Carol which is a pleasure to have at the top (but won't win as she's gone next week).

I think it is a strong range of characters hitting the top spot - Carol, Shirley, Sharon and Jane. Now if we can just get Denise up there....

I think Ian, Sharon, Jane, Mick and Shirley will be in the top 5. I don't think Shirley will win the count. She's not in any of the episodes in 2 weeks time but she might appear on Thursday and Friday but it's unlikely. It appears she doesn't have any storylines coming up soon. I think Linda Henry has taken her annual break but she is taking it in smaller chunks every few weeks. That's what I think. She has been so quiet since June

I agree. It's a good mixture for the top 5 too, I think.

I had wondered if LH had already taken her A/L but she doesn't appear to have anything coming up in Autumn at all, so I don't know whether she has taken it as normal and will be back properly at the end of Nov, and from June-Oct Shirley was just quiet? I'm hoping that LH has taken it in smaller chunks though, like you have suggested and that she will be back soon. The same goes for Karl Howman and Buster.

Diane Parish/Denise desperately needs a storyline, aswell as Jamie Borthwick/Jay.

^ I think DTC decided Shirley should take a backseat for a few months because I read that he said the Carters were too prominent? I hope Shirley doesn't leave in October for a few weeks but it depends if Linda Henry wants to take a proper break? I think she needs to find out about Dean ASAP.

Denise and Jay are very neglected and it's criminal that they are not used to their full potential. I also miss Denise and Shirley's scenes. EE are terrible at friendships

I think he decided that all the Carters should take a backseat, they have all been quiet for awhile haven't they? Linda/Mick are back in the spotlight next week/week after though, I think?

Usually Shirley disappears mid-end of Sept and then returns towards the end of Nov, but considering she has been really quiet since June already, I'm hoping it won't be that long. Unless Linda Henry has taken her full 8+ week break in one chunk, then it will be. Doesn't seem to be any sign of Buster either, I'd like him to be developed more. Maybe they could cast a brother or parent for him? I'm not too keen on long lost kids suddenly turning up but the former would be good.

Shirley does need to find out ASAP, it looks like it will happen over New Year? Did you read about that? How would you like her to find out, or think she will find out?

Denise and Jay are two brilliant characters, I really think they need to be utilised better. They have been woefully underused which is a terrible shame. I can't understand why they spend so much time in the background. I really wish that DTC would propel them into the forefront with some meaty material. I thought they were going to explore alcoholism with Denise but that story fizzled out as quickly as it started, it was the same with Masood's darker side.

I miss Denise/Shirley's friendship too. EE seem to only revisit friendships if a storyline calls for it, they need to get that community feel back again. The scene with Carol, Denise, Shirley and Kim on Friday was brilliant, it was only small but I really enjoyed it.

"Queen" Shirley will win, so predictable!

I'm glad Sharon is faring very well. She is an original character and it's nice that 2015 has been her year although recent developments has done her no favours. Eg: Max.

You can't seriously still be singling Shirley out? Sharon is joint first, any comments about Shirley being in 91 eps are now also applied to Sharon too. It can't be one rule for one, and not for anyone else...

The Carters dominated last year, but you can't really say they are now, not even Shirley. The issue that the list highlights is the block storytelling. Ideally, the characters should have a similar number of appearances, but despite her maternity leave, Lauren has the more appearances than Paul (who first appeared about 5 months ago) while Whitney has appeared in 20 less episodes than Darth Abi

This is usually Shirley's quiet time of year so I don't see her winning. I think it's going to be Sharon or Jane.

I love that Sharon is FINALLY at the top of the episode count. Go Queen Sharon. But it won't last. I reckon either Ian, Jane, Shirley or Mick will win

Thanks Dullag for the recent episode appearance count

Denise is so low.
That really annoys me - it's disgusting that they're not using Denise properly. Diane Parish deserves to be one of the leading ladies but she's a glorified extra . Why are TPTB so reluctant to give Denise more airtime?
