And you can't see the difference between them using these terms and a white man calling a black man a 'negro'? Really?

And I despair of disingenuous people like you claiming that the word 'negro' is only used as a descriptor of race and has no other connotations.

Wise up.

Negro isn't an offensive term, Ken's usage was impolite but not offensive. Negro is no different than the term Caucasian, ****** is the offensive word used to be offensive.

The negro thing was racially insensitive at best. Pickanniny was racist. Jewish film producer? Oh Lord! He's going for some sort of record.

Is Ken just on a mission to get thrown out?
He is vile.

Someone should inform the United Negro College Fund that the name of the organisation is now deemed to be offensive..

He said that.

Do they lose their fee if they get evicted?

I think Alexander is in a good position to tell Ken whether his use of the term would be considered offensive or not by most black people.

The words used in historic or scientific referance are caucasoid for whites/Europeans and negroid for blacks, not calling a man "a big negro" in a southern American accent.

It's all about context and intent like all language. Obviously in that context there is no derogatory intent. Ken's use was arguably derogatory and belittling. Given his other comments just on this episode suggest he meant it to be derogatory.

It makes me laugh how in this age of p.c do gooders how certain words are now so offensive, back when I was a kid and in my teens ( some 30 plus years ago ) no one would bat an eyelid if you used the N word or P word or even called someone a spastic.

I'm not sure we should be telling an African American that a term he finds offensive isn't offensive.

Well thankfully nowadays blacks can drink at the same water fountains as everybody else.

Some of the older generation can't keep up
- coloured was deemed offensive and was replaced by negro
- negro was then deemed offensive and replaced by black
- not sure where Afro-American fits in here.

Interestingly ... The United States Census Bureau announced that "Negro" would be included on the 2010 United States Census, alongside "Black" and "African-American", because some older black Americans still self-identify with the term

I agree. He could've stopped once Alexander gave his rebuttal. But, he just kept going, because he wasn't getting a more heated reaction out of him.

Ah yes, the good old days when you could laugh at the disabled and bawl racist remarks in the street if the fancy took you.

Pity we can't send you back there.

the point is Negro is not used as an offensive term, plenty of words were created with the intent to offend and dehumanize but Negro isn't one, it's meant to be used more in a formal context in the same way Caucasian can be used instead of White. The context in which Ken used it was rude and Alexander pointed out Black is the more polite term which is true but at no point did he say Negro is as offensive as ****** which people here are saying.

I know, I know. 30 plus years ago you could touch up a kid without everyone kicking off! Easy as P.I.E. Now you've got to sign a bloody PC EU register before taking your binoculars to the local primary school. Gotta laugh at how ridiculously PC it all is now!!

That term was in common use a generation ago and for someone like Ken, it's reasonable that he wouldn't be knowledgeable about how the term is perceived these days and what other terms are more acceptable to black Americans. Alexander explained the situation to him and along with BB's warning, it feels like a fair response.

It seems that Ken is deliberately trying to be controversial and provocative in order to get evicted first. Fair enough - lots of other CBB housemates have attempted that - but Ken seems to have gone too far, from a pantomime villain into a genuinely horrible person.

That's why you can tell that the context was passive aggressive and derogatory. He wanted a reaction. Suarez-like. Thank God Alexander is a gentleman. A lesser man would have swung for him.

Totally, Alexander's reaction was handled perfectly. A total contrast on how Perez was when he was flying off the handle. I liked Alexander from the start and didn't think it was fair he was put up for eviction by Katie. He has gone up a bit more in my estimations after tonights episode. I hope he doesn't go on Tuesday, would like to see more of him.

So which is it then?

Ken made an innocent blunder based on his age etc or he was winding Alexander up and hoping to get a reaction?

You're talking out of both sides of your mouth IMO
