Generic words are offensive personal insults are OK

Someone in another post quoted that Martin Luther King used the word Negro in his I have a dream speech, and another poster said the world has moved on since then.

Moved on too much, this whole PC brigade is just too damn sensitive. We now live in a world where we cannot use any kind of words apart from those approved by the PC brigade without being racist yet we can dish out vile personal insults to a persons appearance and character assassinate them without the bat of an eyelid.
Is it OK for Chloe and Perez to throw horrible personal insults at at Ken???
He has got a weird sense of humour, and was doing armed knock impersonation but the world is not a funny place anymore . Michelle gets his weird humour but the young are too far up their own arses and have had PC drummed into them.
I know what would hurt me more - someone using a word that described my race that may be outdated but not offensive, or someone insulting my physical appearance. People are so shallow, and by the way I am mixed race myself.

I agree that these days trying to be PC and inoffensive can be like walking on eggdhells at times.
Is the problem that people are too sensetive at times or that the guide lines are not clear enough? I sometimes wonder.
I think it's always best to try not to cause offensive, but it's slso a good idea to try and maintain a balance and take intent into consideration.
I don't think Ken was trying to insult Alexander with the use of the word Negro, it cames across as more insulting to Ken's own intelligence but someone more reactionary than Alexander could have chosen to respond differently and take excessive offense, which also would have been inappropriate.
Katie's comment 'Well it's a job" was almost satirical in as much as pointing out that we do somehow reconcile with ourselves why we purchase clothes and other items made by exploited children in the third world.
Yes that comment made some people feel uncomfortable but probably not for the reason they thought.
Maybe that's the problem, people taking offense but not really knowing why they are offended.

Couldn't have put it better myself, seems like someone people don't know the meaning so just jump on the PC bandwagon as they feel they must.

I totally agree. I hate political correctness, because it often makes people offended for no reason. I'm a firm believer in 'it's not what you say, it's how you say it'. Like you all have said it's okay for Katie to call people whores and fat bastards but it's not ok for Ken to use an, admittedly, outdated term but with no offensive intended.

Chloe called Ken a horribly insulting name, an attack on his physical appearance. , yet if had said something referring to her getting her boobs out as a job it would have been totally wrong. She makes her living by making money out of "perverts" drooling over her breasts. Double standards as I see it.

It's up to the woman when and where people can look, touch, drool and comment on her body. If she says it's okay then it's okay. If she doesn't then it's not okay. That goes for each and every incident, no exceptions.
It may seem unfair to some men, but not to most.

Correct, people use the word racist without even understanding what it is, I was waiting for people to pull me up on my post as I am mixed race and am quite dark, more brown than black but have suffered racism in the worst ways which is why my posts sometimes look a bit rude against people who make stupid comments.

These posts on here in all the threads are made by people who read in the media that certain words are "racist" and are supported by those fellow blacks who are way too over sensitive about their colour and give fuel to the PC bandwagon.

As for the woman above talking above regarding comments on someone's bum or body, if a woman makes a living baring her body in national newspapers or magazines and is the reason she is in the house in the first place then it absolutely gives someone the right to comment about this, touch no , comment yes.

The political correctness has gone mad. People can be pulled up and torn to shreds for using an outdated word or phrase even when they intended no malice or harm by it. The PC brigade immediately snap back "It doesn't matter what they intended, that word is deeply offensive", when surely whether the person intended to be racist or sexist or whatever is all that matters.

Getting back to the real world.

ken knew what he was doing when he said the word 'piccaninny'

He's just a nasty man and I wish people would call him for what he is

Political correctness is ridiculous most of the time. We now live in a world where i got told off for opening a door for a woman (i'm a man) and later in the SAME DAY i got a dirty look for offering my seat on the bus to a woman.
Its mad and common sense is never used, when it comes to words people use, but ken is out of order because he knows what he's saying and even admitted he doesn't care because he's retiring soon.

Context and common sense should ALWAYS be used when it comes to political correctness (and it doesn't unfortunately) but ken is out of order, anyway you look at it.

Having said all that, i don't have a clue why the "i'm offended by that" group would want to live in a world where we all walk around like zombies with our heads down while walking on egg shells.
People in a lot of cases need to grow a backbone i feel.

If she gets her kit off in public she is going to get men drooling over her (if they fancy her) and people will have an opinion, nothing she can do about it.

It was not any "PC brigade" that decided "negro" should no longer normally be used, and "black" should be used instead.

That's simply not true.

I agree, people are so damn stupid for being offended by offensive words.

As long as you're astute, intelligent and reasonable, it really isn't difficult to keep up with the current world, so I don't know why people are making out as though it is. Ken knew the words he was using are now considered offensive - Alexander told him multiple times - but he continued to use them anyway. If I was a family member watching him, I'd be thoroughly embarrassed.

What words are you wanting to use that you don't believe you are allowed to? Genuine question by the way, not being funny I promise. I'm just never quite sure what it is that this so-called brigade is preventing me from doing.

So you have been enslaved since birth, constantly abused, and have been forced to have several illegitimate children and lots of abortions by your master?

Or are you using a touch of hyperbole?

There is nothing wrong with political correctness itself and it is a noble ideal. Some people take it too far but that is no different to anything. Somebody takes everything too far.

OK. I'm of an age and brought up in USA when I remember stuff like drinking fountains, toilets and cafes being labelled 'colored' and 'white'. In the 1950s/early 60s 'colored' was the kind/enlightened way to refer to black people; then their racial dignity was recognised by the word 'Negro' [whites were Caucasian; orientals were Asian], hence Martin Luther King's and other excellent developments in that era like the NAACP and the Negro College Fund, etc. However, Ken should KNOW the British latest PC lingo is 'Black'--but I'm impressed Alexander was OK with that as it seems 'African-American' is the PC term even if non-US born resident blacks are described. Alexander, like Ken is OLD enough to remember past pc terms, and that Negro was actually a Term of Respect in 1960s.....Ken, however, WAS seemingly deliberately provocative, and nastily working toward his own ends.

Thank you. This seems reasonable.
Ken has that sense of entitlement that is common with many men of his age. Why on earth should he make the most minuscule change in his language to not offend? Why should he consider another human beings feelings at virtually no effort on his behalf.

I totally agree that some people actively seek out to be offended but in this case, men like Ken are why the PC brigade are a wonderful thing IMO. Would you want him to call your sister/wife/daughter 'half slut' on tv?
I find him a bid sad and dated.

This Countrys to PC!. Big Brother has one rule for one and another rule for another. Its the same old rubbish. Ken wanted to leave anyhow so no great loss and in terms of what he could have added to the show, he wont be missed. However I defend him in that his behaviour and his humour is old school and a bit out their, but that doesnt mean hes vile. Its the generation game his genre is so different to the one now.

Don't be ridiculous, you know I am talking about modern day racism I was not alive when that kind of thing was going on and neither were you so you are talking irrelevant nonsense.

I am black but would be more offended being called fat and ugly that being referred to as a negro, Negro is not PC but is generic, fat and ugly would be personal.

I know. I mean I am nearly 30 and I have never thought it was acceptable to use the term negro. The only time I have heard it is in very old films and documentaries. It's not like it was suddenly decided a few years ago to confuse people.
