It definitely continues downloading in the background if you have the Instant On power setting enabled with auto-downloads.
I use an external HDD for storing all my games, and if I set the console downloading something and then shut it down I can see the external HDD light flashing away as it continues to download. The light on the logo does flash though if it's doing other stuff when you shut down, e.g. downloading and installing a system update. ![]() I have Instant On enabled (there is no option for 'auto downloads'?) and also the option for 'When Xbox is off, turn off storage' Unticked but when I turn my X1 off, the downloads stop (I can see that the download stops from the network activity lights on my router) + the logo on the console does NOT flash?

In the same place you find the option for Instant On there should also be an option for auto-downloading of stuff.
You can also enable "when Xbox is off, turn off storage" - it will still update stuff even if stored on an external drive, it will just turn the storage on, download, and then turn the storage off. Is the console fully up to date? If you go to My Games & Apps > Settings > System, is there any mention of a system update being available? |

The only other option is 'Automatically download updates & purchases' which I have ticked anyway. There are no updates available for it (it updated before I entered the codes for the downloads). |

Op don't forget to go to Devices & accessories in the settings menu then connect the controller with a USB and update the firmware on it.

I'm aware of this but sadly my console did not come with a sub lead for the controller so will have to buy one to update it - but thanks anyway. Quote:
That's the one I mean

Will turn the console off and update this post at some point. |

If you are getting the official Play & Charge kit then that will come with a nice long USB lead. |

The controller has a standard micro USB socket on it so chances are you probably already have a lead that will work with it, You will find most USB leads that come with a mobile phone or camera will be suitable..

Ok, so turned the console off at the time of my previous post and it is indeed doing a background download (I can see the network activity on the powerline adaptor connector to the X1) however, the Xbox logo itself does not flash or anything? It's off?!!

The light on the logo does flash though if it's doing other stuff when you shut down, e.g. downloading and installing a system update.

The logo doesn't flash for game/app downloads or updates, just stuff like system updates.

The power brick stays white when switched off in instant on mode, when switched off in energy saving mode the light goes orange.

Instant On power mode: PSU light stays white all the time.
Energy Saving power mode: PSU light is white when the console is on, orange when it's in standby. EDIT: Ah, beaten to it by gds1972!

One thing which is totally strange is when you 'pin' stuff. When you choose the option to 'bring to the front' the most recent pins go on the far right?!? They should go on the far left - not the right!!! Also, when you add a pin, it shifts all the other pins up by one position so they all get shifted out of position?!! Also seems that you can only pin a certain number of items. Have now installed several games but haven't yet had the chance to play them. |

Download the Xbox One Smartglass app on your mobile and you can re-arrange the pins.
![]() Did I read somewhere that you can also change the transparency of the tiles on the dashboard or am I imagining this?!? |

Tiles are only transparent when you use a custom background (Achievement art or your own image).
Here's how to set your own background: http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-o...ard-background And some backgrounds that other people have made: https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxthemes http://themer.xaged.com/ |

Ok I'm back with some more questions!!!
1. Snap features are really confusing?!! Can someone please explain how this is meant to work cos I just can't figure it out?!! ![]() 2. The apps displayed on the 'Home' screen keep changing on my dashboard?!! Is this meant to happen??! One minute I will look there and it has certain apps. When I then go back to it later on, some of the original apps have gone and other ones are there instead?! ![]() 3. Setting a gamer pic seems very broken IMHO. When I set a gamer pic, quite often, mye gamer pic does NOT appear in the top left of the dashboard (where it shows your name) and when I look at my profile within my activity feed, the gamer pic which I previously set, also, quite often, does NOT show?! At one point, I had a gamer pic showing on my profile in the activity feed but then, a totally DIFFERENT gamer pic showing in the top left of the dashboard (where it shows your name)?!! The whole gamer pic thing seems very broken......!!!![]() 4 . When finishing playing a game (i.e. when I have finished playing for the night), what is the correct way to exit the game?! Do I just press the glowing Xbox guide button on my controller as the game I was playing (AC:Unity) had NO 'exit to Dashboard' option like most of the 360 games have?! That's it for now - thanks in advance!!! Sorry for the dumb questions but it's obviously all new to me!!!!!

1) Snap
You can "snap" something to the right-hand side of the screen, letting you e.g. have Achievements, or Friends, or Game DVR, or various other things open at the same time as a game. You can Snap from the Snap tile on the Home tab, or you can "double-tap to Snap" by double-tapping the Xbox button (equivalent of the Guide button) on the controller to bring up the Snap Centre. You can use the Snap Centre to record the last 30 seconds of gameplay ("Press X to record"), open a new app in Snap mode, close a Snapped app, switch focus between the main app and the snapped app, etc. With the regular updates MS has made, the Snap Centre is as close as we'll get to having a 360-style Guide with quick access to Friends, Achievements, Messages, etc. It is hugely better than it was at launch. Some links: http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-o...task-with-snap http://news.xbox.com/2014/06/xbox-on...update-preview http://news.xbox.com/2014/09/xbox-on...ctober-preview http://news.xbox.com/2014/10/xbox-on...es-on-xbox-one 2) Things on Home The column of three tiles on the right-hand side of the Home tab are always Snap, My Games & Apps, and Play Disc (or something like that). The big tile in the middle-ish is always the current game/app, or the one last run. The tiles underneath are the last ones run before that. They give you easy access to what you've used recently. 3) Can't help with that, sorry. 4) Quitting games Yeah, just hit the Xbox button (like the Guide button) to go back to the dash (save first, of course). Because of the multitasking, games/apps remain running until you specifically quit them or the console closes them due to needing resources for something else. If you want to fully quit something you've finished, then after you have gone back to the dashboard, select the game tile and then use the menu button on the controller to select Quit. |
