1) Snap
You can "snap" something to the right-hand side of the screen, letting you e.g. have Achievements, or Friends, or Game DVR, or various other things open at the same time as a game. You can Snap from the Snap tile on the Home tab, or you can "double-tap to Snap" by double-tapping the Xbox button (equivalent of the Guide button) on the controller to bring up the Snap Centre. You can use the Snap Centre to record the last 30 seconds of gameplay ("Press X to record"), open a new app in Snap mode, close a Snapped app, switch focus between the main app and the snapped app, etc. With the regular updates MS has made, the Snap Centre is as close as we'll get to having a 360-style Guide with quick access to Friends, Achievements, Messages, etc. It is hugely better than it was at launch. Some links: http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-o...task-with-snap http://news.xbox.com/2014/06/xbox-on...update-preview http://news.xbox.com/2014/09/xbox-on...ctober-preview http://news.xbox.com/2014/10/xbox-on...es-on-xbox-one 2) Things on Home The column of three tiles on the right-hand side of the Home tab are always Snap, My Games & Apps, and Play Disc (or something like that). The big tile in the middle-ish is always the current game/app, or the one last run. The tiles underneath are the last ones run before that. They give you easy access to what you've used recently. 3) Can't help with that, sorry. 4) Quitting games Yeah, just hit the Xbox button (like the Guide button) to go back to the dash (save first, of course). Because of the multitasking, games/apps remain running until you specifically quit them or the console closes them due to needing resources for something else. If you want to fully quit something you've finished, then after you have gone back to the dashboard, select the game tile and then use the menu button on the controller to select Quit. ...awsome - cheers for this Matt . Really appreciated ![]() Never even seen the 'Quit' option before so will have to check that out tonight! Also, the apps on the Home screen - yep, it is indeed the bottom ones which keep changing but as you say, its changing to the ones which were recently used, so thanks again for clarifying. Will also check out the links you have provided. ![]() Quote:
When this happens try pressing and releasing LT RT & Y all together as this force the dashboard to refresh itself and hopefully then show things correctly afterwards.

This thread could do with being pinned for new adopters of the Xbox One to looks through as FAQ style thread.
I've just read through the last 2 days of posts and they would really help a new adopter. |

Tiles are only transparent when you use a custom background (Achievement art or your own image).
Here's how to set your own background: http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-o...ard-background And some backgrounds that other people have made: https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxthemes http://themer.xaged.com/ ...that bottom link isn't working for me?! When I click it, it does go to the website but then, when I click on any image, I just get an error pop up box stating, "User request limit exceeded".

You'll get used to it even if it is a little strange to begin with.
I had the AC:Unity digital download too and it is really handy to just close the Xbox down straight from in the game by saying "Xbox turn off" then the next day saying "Xbox on" then being able to just click in the big box on the Home screen and carry on playing from where you left off without any loading.

Don't worry deans6571, thread is here. Mini AWOL was probably because of the change of title. |

I asked the mods for the thread to be pinned, as suggested by others here, but it seems that something went rather wrong...

Phew
- its back!!!!1 or 2 more questions for you guys (really appreciate everyone's responses )!!!1. So I was playing around with the Snap feature last night (thanks to Matt above for the tips!) and managed to Snap my achievements to the main screen. Are you only able to snap one thing at a time (can you snap Achievements and also, say, your friends list)? 2. When 'UnSnapping' a feature, I found the only way to do this was to press the guide button on the controller (even whilst playing a game) and selecting the 'Unsnap' option. Isn't there a quicker way to do this as it seems rather convoluted having to press the guide button every time and then selecting 'Unsnap'? 3. Found the 'Quit' option for when ending a game sessions so thanks for this tip . However, I noticed last night that when I actually turned my console off for the night (I have the option set, which keeps the power brick light glowing white and not orange), even though the Xbox logo was off, it sounded like the console was still on?! There was a distinct hum like the console was still running. I checked it again this morning and the 'hum' was no longer there. Could it have been doing some kind of background download or something?!4. What exactly does the 'B' button do when on the dashboard? I would have thought that it backs you out to the previous menu but that is not always the case!? Sometimes it backs out to the previous screen you were looking at, but other times, it just takes me back out to a totally random dashboard screen (sometimes out to my activity feed)?! Thats it - for now....!!

One thing I did notice is that if you say snap the achievements to the side of the screen whilst ingame, it switches the controls to the achievements list so you can scroll through them. I was playing Minecraft and travelling across water which was taking ages so I decided to snap the achievements whilst still moving to see what achievements I was closest to getting. It switched controls to the achievement list and then I started sinking in the water. Had to unsnap so I could regain control in the game. The other thing with the snap feature I noticed is that if you try to go into an app later on which has previously been snapped it opens it in snapped view instead of full view which is annoying. Had some issues with SmartGlass last night which I'd had occasionally in the past. I was using my phone as a controller to scroll through IE and control the cursor. It randomly started slowing down and would stop working then all of a sudden start working like the control was lagging. And it would keep going out of the "controller" screen to the home screen in SmartGlass. Really annoying! |

3 - If you hear the console after you have shut down it is probably downloading and installing an update. FYI - the updates downloads when the system is off can take a lot longer than if the console is fully turned on. I can sometimes find my Xbox still downloading/updating at 7am in the morning and I know it started updating around 23:45 as the light on my external drive was still going.
4 - In my experience it just goes back to the previous screen. ...ok - that explains it then, thanks! ![]() Just one other thought..... You know when setting custom backgrounds (there are tons here : http://themer.xaged.com/), why can you not save them to OneDrive on a pc and then just open OneDrive on the X1 and use the pictures directly from there? Seems like a huge missed opportunity (seeing that OneDrive has an app on the Dashboard)?! Why on earth do you have to 'go round the houses' to save the images to a flash drive and then plug in said flash drive, to the console and do it that way?!!

As the mods apparently messed up when trying to deal with my first request to "pin" this thread, I used the "Contact Us" option instead last night to try and request it a second time.
I've since had a reply saying something along the lines of "forum management will look into the possibility". I don't see what the issue is...Multiple people here think it would be a good idea. ---------- Unsnapping: IIRC, the only way to unsnap, other than double-tap-Xbox & select unsnap, is to use Kinect and say "Xbox, unsnap". B button: Doesn't work the same as on the 360. Instead of *only* being used to go back, it will also sometimes open things. I find it annoying, and I'm not the only one... http://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/253...ous-games-apps I try to just use the Xbox button now to return to the dash, instead of using B to "go back". |

Unfortunately the trouble with navigating things like this and recording videos is one of legacy's of trying to control things that were originally meant to be controlled by using Kinect that they have not managed to find the perfect solution to. |

As for backgrounds and OneDrive -
Others have suggested it: http://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/253...-as-background Add your vote. MS *does* actually listen to feedback, hence all the new and improved features the Xbox One has had the last year. |

If you quickly double tap the Xbox button you can then select the snapped menu and press the B button (you may need to press it more than once) you should be able to close the snapped menu.

I never have the snap running as I find it odd having the game screen off centre. |

I just had a look and I'm embarrassed to admit I had never noticed that before now
Did double-tap-Xbox used to just switch game/snap focus before the Snap Centre? It's very useful how it is now. Double-tap-Xbox for the Snap Centre, and then (IIRC): Left on D-pad to switch focus to the game / main app. Right on D-pad to switch focus to the snapped app. Down on D-pad to unsnap. Up on D-pad to snap a new app (brings up another menu listing snappable apps). X to record the last 30 seconds of gameplay. |

I can't remember when it was added - would have been one of the Snap Centre updates.

I have loaded up two games now on the X1 and for both, I had to to manually go into the controller options for the game itself and invert the controls. Can this not be set up like on the 360? |
