How do you mean, no silent mode? In settings?!
![]() ![]() There is a way around I think, but it isn't ideal. Just means I'll turn my phone off at night now, at least until they patch it back in. EDIT: You can put silent mode on, but it silences everything, including alarms. Also, since posting yesterday I have noticed issues with battery life, especially when browsing the internet. I gave my phone a full charge and I'll see how long it lasts today before it dips into the teens. |

Mine's just updated and the screen is really dark. I've tried adjusting the brightness, but that's not helped.
No silent mode is annoying too

![]() For the moment, I have it on vibrate mode but with vibrations turned off! I don't think it affects alarms this way, but I can't really remember the last time I used an alarm. ![]() I am on Three and got this update a few weeks ago, just searched to see if anyone else had a problem with the lack of silent mode - so am glad to find it's being reintroduced. I'm not too sure about all the 'whiteness' of the theme, but I guess I'll get used to it! |

It actually blows my mind that someone at Android thought "I know, let's remove silent mode in the next version of Android".
I mean what were they thinking

The Android developer team seems to be lacking in "real users". They all seem to be programmers who are exceptionally good but they don't know how to code for the average user.

I mean what were they thinking ![]() What they tried to do was give three modes. All notifications and events come through User decides which notifications and events come through No notifications and events So, for example, you could have your phone set to be silent except for the alarm and calls from a particular contact. It seems that people found this complicated or didn't need the extra flexibility. Personally I think it's incredibly useful but they should have included a Silent mode for people who had no need of it or couldn't grasp how to do it. |

I use blocking mode. It disables calls and notifications except from my wife And allows alarm. I've got this activated between 10pm and 7am

Don't like it the colours and layout look very cheap and dated.

I've finally upgraded yesterday but am a little underwhelmed.
The only real reson that I wanted to upgrade was the Smartlock where I though it would save me having to unlock my phone whilst I'm on my wireless network at home, but of course it's only Bluetooth and NFC it works with, so I though "fair enough I'll try pairing with my Bluetooth adaptor on my amp", but have found out you have to be connected to it constantly for this to work and it not just seeing it. Seems like the Smartunlock is only going to really be useful in the car as I always connect to that Bluetooth. Just wish they had implemented it either just seeing Bluetooth devices or wireless networks within range. Everything may seem a little snappier, but not by much. I could not seem to see blocking mode last night (where you can mate certain things between given hours) is it on there and I've missed it? If not I can always get another app. I did a factory reset before and after the update to make sure. |

Just went to add my Bluetooth speaker to find there was an option to set my home as a Smartlock location, so I'm a happy bunny now.

'Blocking Mode' can be found under the Device tab, then Personalisation option. At least under Kitkat...

I have installed an app that has better options to the one I use to have on Kitkat now anyway. |

I've got the Galaxy Alpha, which is excellent vfm if bought at around £300 (which I did). Suffice to say, I'm staying well clear of Lollipop!

Lollipop sounds a disaster. Are they talking moving to M soon ? Lollipop must be the windows vista of the phone world.

I think it's more of a core software update rather than features along with the lighter colour (which I'm getting use to now). It would be nice if you could have the option of the lighter or the old darker theme though if you really wanted that. The only real feature I like is the Smartlock and am loving that along with it making the phone a little faster (must admit not sure about the extended battery life but it's lasting at least as long as it did before, but it's hard to tell as I've been using the phone a lot more the last few days being off work and also fiddling with it setting it up etc). |

Be glad, I'm still being told that 4.4.2 is the latest version.
I've tried OTA and Kies. I'm going to have to do a manual installation using Odin. |
