Yesterday my Panasonic TV started acting strange, and switching off and on after 25 mins, it was very quick at coming back on, less than 10 seconds.

After checking a few things it seems it was the Ext hard drive I connected a week ago ? As soon as I disconnected the hard drive the TV did a quick re-boot again, but has stopped switching off.

Would the hard drive been drawing too much power from the USB causing the fault

Nigel ?

If you're going to use a mechanical drive as opposed to a USB memory stick then it's always good practice to run with an external power supply. There's often not enough current from the USB socket to support power hungry peripherals.

I agree with Chris, if you're using an HDD use an external PSU for it - applies to a computer as well.

I wondered that?, but presumed that they should have been a question mark at the end?.

i.e. he was asking if perhaps it was down to faulty capacitors.

Yes sorry should have put a ?

The external hardrive does have an external power supply, that's why I'm surprised the TV can't handle the power , the TV. Tuner won't record to memory stick for obvious space reasons ,

Are you sure the drive's PSU is working? Does the drive have any sort of power indicator on it? If so unplug the drive from the TV and just have it plugged into the PSU. If the power indicator does not come on then the PSU could be dead and the drive is trying to draw power from the USB connection instead.

The PSU is fine, the drive will not function without it, as I said I have switched the drive off and the TV is fine now, but if the PSU board in the TV is failing ( or starting to) I would rather replace it now.

Fairy nuff. There are some USB drives, usually the smaller 2.5in types that can take power from either an external PSU or the USB port. If the PSU fails they try to run from USB power so if the port they are plugged into is man enough the drive keeps going as though nothing happened.

Bit odd though that if it only uses the external PSU and does not use the USB power at all that it would be affecting the TV power supply.

To be fair, it needs both. If I use just the PSU , it won't power up without a USB feed and vice versa, it's an old freecom 3.5 USB 250gb. It worked fine for the first week, now it just makes the TV reeboot every 25 mins. , there are 3 USB inputs on the TV, I gather one is designed for an external hard drive , I may have it in the wrong one, as the set is fixed to the wall it is hard to read any writing on the USB ports.
