and im trying to connect it to my tv so that the speakers work with all the functions on the tv but cant seem to get the set up right, i can get it to work with the sky by connecting the audio cables directly to the sky box but if i connect them to the tv and change the tv to external speakers i get nothing

anyone know what im doing wrong, the tv is an LG 50LA660v

Presumably you used a stereo phono plug to phono plug lead like this

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/317TKTDqbbL.jpg

to connect the Sky box to the Sony system. That would appear to be the only way you can have done it and would work for the Sky box as it has suitable audio output sockets.

If you then used the same cable to plug into the TV then you will have got nothing as the TV does not have any suitable audio OUTPUTs. All the audio sockets are INPUTs

The only audio outputs on the TV are the optical digital out or headphones. The optical out will require a converter box like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Digita...dp/B002AKXG5E/

to interface the TV to the Sony system.

Alternatively a simple 3.5mm stereo jack to phono lead like this

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31IW%2BRuaCBL.jpg

could be run from the TV headphone socket to the Sony.

There is an audio output on the SCART socket on the TV which could be used with the phono lead using an adapter like this

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4L._SX425_.jpg

However the SCART output only feeds the Freeview audio out and then only when watching Freeview. Watch anything else and it is silent So would be no good when watching Sky for example.

I'm assuming you are connecting to the audio inputs on the TV, either for composite or component, which is why you are not getting any audio, you will probably find that there is an optical output supplied which you can use providing the sound system has an optical input, if it hasn't there are various convertor box's out there to suit the input(s) available.
