It's so different to her previous work but still retains that "Dawn-ness", an epic story of love and war with fantastical themes, the album works as an album, I find that most of it only plays well when heard in one listen, there are only a couple of songs that work by themselves, Phoenix and Blow being the ones that come to mind.
It wasn't as instant for me as her previous albums, but last night in bed I listened to it to relax and it totally clicked, just a constant stream of magical, almost bizarre sounds, her voice is as mesmerizing as always, and her lyrics smart and personal, personal highlights for me are Calypso, Blow, Warriors, Projection, Castles (this one is about Danity Kane), Phoenix, Choices and The Deep.
Only con for me is the length of Adderall, it's the same reason I can't get into Justin Timberlakes albums, I DETEST long songs, 5 minutes is my limit and then I start getting bored, but I suppose s pro for the song is that it sounds like 5 different songs mashed together lol.
What are your thoughts on it?”
What I like about this album is how sprawling and restless the whole thing is. Tracks shift and morph all the time, and when you think you've got a grip of one track it totally changes form into something else. Even the lyrics are like a stream of conscience which shift wherever they want which I love - the 'hook, riff, bridge' is essentially thrown out the window. The lyrics, vocals and production essentially melt into each other in such a way that clarity ceases to exist - a good thing as the album essentially doesn't reveal all its secrets straight away which is how all good music works, hence how you were listening to it again last night and it suddenly clicked.
You're right in that the album makes more sense when it is listened to in one go, but then again that is the sign of an album that has been put together properly to be an actual album rather than a load of blatant singles shunted together for the sake of it. Don't get me wrong though, there are a couple of more traditional tracks like you said that work by themselves and they're such good tracks anyway.
One thing that annoys me about the album - why did she have to leave Tides off the album?
I don't expect DS to cover this album, but when you have people in what claims to be a music forum giving more attention to Madonna's or The Saturday's next crap albums you just despair.
