Retro meals?
Tonight we are having one of our 'retro meals'. A Vesta curry and a bottle of Mateus Rose. Candlelight of course. It's all done in ironic style of course. This will be followed by a DVD of The Avengers.
Does anyone else do this kind of thing? |

I'm not allowed puddings! Sometimes a prawn cocktail beforehand though!

Mateus Rose isn't half as bad as it used to be, although I imagine Vesta curries are still the same.
Nice idea. I might go for a Fray Bentos pie and a nice bottle of Liebfraumilch. |

It went very well. A Vesta Chow Mein, Mateus Rose, some cheesy easy listening music and a good reminisce about old snacks and sweets. Then a couple of old Avengers episodes from DVD. Bloody marvellous!

Those retro meals sound great, I used to like Vesta beef risotto back in the day,
They used to do a chop suey one too, tried it but wasn't keen. the chow mein was nice though |

Lovely addition here.
I love how they authenticate it with an image of the Taj Mahal on the package ![]() https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ve...2F%3B606%3B502 With a Vesta curry everyone plated the rice in a circle around the outer edge of the plate and poured the curry into the centre. ![]() Wine of choice would be Blue Nun or Black Tower surely? |

Whenever I have curry and rice, I still have the rice around the plate.
I can't have it any other way, or it doesn't feel right to me!

Same here, rice in a ring, curry in the middle. Had a takeaway Chinese beef curry tonight as it happen.
I've not had a Vesta for a while, I went off the beef risotto a bit when the "meat" changed from being lumps about the size of peas to more like mince - mind you that was a good few years ago now. |

The thing with the prawn cocktail was it became extremely naff and then came back into fashion. Parma Ham and Melon would have been more retro.

I've seen Michelin starred chefs do that. It's so retro it's stopped being retro.

There are lots of good things that the microwave killed off. Marks and Sparks used to do a really good canellonni which came in a tinfoil pack and which you cooked by boiling for half-an-hour.
Another classic would be the original Wimpy hamburger, which was surrounded by a grilled frankfurter cut into a ring. |

I got a pang of nostalgia recently when I saw a Fray Bentos pie in the supermarket. I hadn't had one in over 20 years.
Bought it. Cooked it. Ate it. It was horrible. Somethings are best left in the past. |

Dont think Fray Bentos pies have changed that much, we had them often when I was a kid in the 60's especially when we were caravanning. Always keep one in the cupboard as I fancy one occasionally, and still like them. Back in the day we only had steak & kidney which still seems same to me but also have the Chicken & Mushroom one these days.
