Can anyone recommend a decent all in one 5.1 surround sound system for about £400?

Thank you

All of these all-in-one systems pale to buying the parts separately.

You get could a decent set of gear for £400.

I highly recommend THIS ONKYO system......I have one working superbly in my lounge. I have it hooked up to a PS3 as the BluRay player, plus the Wii, PVR and TV are connected.

Thank you for sending the link, will consider this.
I've never had one before so any tips on separate items would be handy.

If you want something decent for 400 quid then

Or moving up a notch

But if the best sound quality and the ability to hook up loads of extra kit is lower down your priority list then

I have an Onkyo subwoofer with built in amp it came as a 2.1 but i bought the extra set of speakers so I could fit the central speaker for dialouge so its now a 3.1 I like it but not sure if they still make this as I have had it for over 3yrs.

Sorry just checked their site and it appears to be still made.

That's the same one I linked to in post #2 it comes with all 5 speakers, rather than buying the two seperately.

The HTX22 as standard comes as a 2.1 system. There is an optional speaker pack to add centre and rears.

I realise that, I have one.....However, I thought they had packaged the two together in that SuperFi offer....Re-reading it doesn't really clarify the situation but the price is about right for the two....

Seems pretty clear to me

This superb value package combines the Onkyo HTX-22HDX High Definition decoder/speaker system with the SKS-22X centre/rear speaker upgrade, giving you a fantastic, full 5.1, high definition home cinema system.

guess it also depends on the size of your room ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, its pretty pointless having allllll that POWER if your not trying to fill wembly stadium , but a 12 by 15 living space.

im sure that yamaha setup for 250 would be more than adequate to fill the average living room with great sound

Manufacturers lie about the power output of their products.

Either they use some totally meaningless unit like "music power" or they drive only a single channel to max and multiply that figure by 5 to give the total power. So for example they may claim the amp has 200W output single channel driven so the total power is 1,000W (excluding the sub).

Sounds impressive until you look closer and notice it only has a 300W power supply! So they have either found a way to break a pretty fundamental law of physics or the 1,000W is bogus. So under normal use you are probably only maxing out at 40W a channel.

All of which means that you should take whatever power output specs the manufacturers quote with a whole lorry load of salt!

i see chris , thankyou , most educational ,

so i suppose in reality you need good independent reviews or even better a demo direct to your ears , ,,,,,, but do places like richers demo the cheaper stuff ? ,,,,,,,, afterall demoing a soundbar or tv is one thing , but asking them to demo a 5.1 with all its setup n wires n stuff is another matter.

Most RS stores can demo multichannel equipment, even as small as they are, many having their own demo rooms, they can demo entry models to the top of their range - or you can take the equipment home for a home trial, return within 14 days if not satisfied.

Wires are all in place, just a matter of connecting the amps/speakers that are being demoed, they can sometimes do this while you wait but prefer you to make an appointment.
