OS Upgrades - Windows Phone or Android??

Im thinking of getting a Windows Phone to use instead of my Moto E at some point, but which is worse, or better, when it comes to the availability of operating system updates. I still don't have Android 5 on my phone yet. Is Windows any better?

I got android 5 on my nexus 4 and 9. Back to 4.4.4 on my new Sony and tbh it makes absolutely no difference so I wouldn't let the speed of update releases affect your decision

With WP you get usually one big update per year plus one two smaller ones. You get two three years of updates. It depends on the hardware when the support is dropped. The network has a say when the update is approved. You can participate in OS previews, last time it was for free, when you get the preview of the next OS as soon as MS releases it. It is expected that the next week MS will introduce a preview of Windows 10 for phones. ATM I have a preview of WP 8.1.1, awaiting an official version of it any day. Might go to W10 instead if it's available sooner.

Have you used it though? Apart from the slightly odd decision to remove a silent toggle, it's a pretty good improvement in most respects.

I've tried it on a Nexus 5, and HTC One M8. On the latter, I had Google Play Edition KitKat and Lollipop and I'm currently running the HTC Sense Lollipop, and in all cases, Lollipop is a nicer experience over KitKat.

On some older devices, they are getting poorer performance, however, that is to be expected considering how much of a visual overhaul it received, however on the Nexus 5 and One M8 it runs lightning fast.

As for the original poster, WP v Android, personal preference really, but I prefer Android but do like WP and think they are both perfectly decent OS's but its Google's offering and services which suit me best.

Not used it as its not even available for my oneplusone phone yet.

But It looks like another backwards step in the UI. Google seem to change things just for the sake of change.

Don't be daft. Here is a link to the CM12 download page. https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=bacon

Lollipop is a complete overhaul of the OS. My 4.x devices seem crap compared to the ones running 5.0. It's that much of an improvement.

As far as WP updates go it doesn't matter. If Android stood still for 3 years WP would still be behind.

I will say that I am a WP fan and I will probably buy another one in the next couple of months. I am fully aware of its many short comings though.

Nothing is official. MS is holding a W10 event on 21st January, they are expected to say something about phones, too.

Only Windows Phones that were released with Windows Phone 8 and above will get it. Phones running v7 will stay on v7, they didn't get the v8 update.

Personally I'd go with Android. Never used a Windows phone but never seem to see them on the list of best phones out there.

I mean no automated update, I am aware I could probably manually upgrade if I wanted to.

But CM on the oneplusone has a optimised version CM11S, so it would be ideally CM12S I would try.

Google do an overhaul every 12-24 months, its nothing special. But some of us dont like massive changes, I prefer stability of UI.
